The reality of my experience at Fairmount Park fell quite a bit short of the many glowing reviews I read :-( My visit was on a weekend morning. I found the area overfilled to capacity, with skateboarders, joggers, bikes, and pedestrians all fighting for space. The worst of it was the cyclists - many of them whizzed past without using signals, bells, or horns, and made us feel like we were taking our lives in our hands... On the plus side, there are quite a number of nice-looking buildings from the eighteen hundreds, as well as the headquarters of the rowing club. Add to that a plethora of statues, gazebos, and greenery and this park is well worth a visit - except next time I'm coming on a weekday and hopefully will miss some of the crowd ;-)

Nice park! Arrived around 8 to 830pm. I could see a lot of people jogging, walking with dogs and simply strolling around the park. There is no parking fee for the 2 hours. But you need to leave before your car gets towed. Restrooms for both men and women are available. Don't expect the floor or toilet to be free from clutter. There's a lot of toilet paper scattered on the ground. No worries about not bringing hand soap of toilet paper, because it's provided with a dispenser. It was late, so I wasn't able to go inside the information center. Pretty sure I see an ice cream for sale when the center is open. The lawn is well-maintained. I could see flickering lights of the dragon flies. Breezy at night time. Looks safe to jog as a loner, but be prepared to defend self at all times. From the other side, across the museum is the famous Rocky Steps and statue.

Fairmount Park is a huge multi-use park located in Northwest Philadelphia. It runs along the Delaware River. You'll find people biking, running, walking dogs, fishing or just chilling out. There is plenty of grassy areas to play as well as lots of trees. Parking on the weekends can be a little challenging however. I highly recommend it, a little paradise in the middle of a busy city!

A lovely park full of mature trees, and a lake surrounded by foliage and filled with ducks, geese, and other creatures. Sometimes I stay at Chamounix Mansion, and I usually walk about 3 miles to the center city. Walking along the side of the lake is so peaceful especially on a nice breezy day. There's a bunch of hidden gems found throughout West and East Fairmount Park like Abandoned bridges and historic statues. Some are even Instagram worthy like the Stone Arch Bridge which is kinda hard to find.

This is basically Philly's Central Park. It is a very picturesque park and quite large. You can go hiking here, rowing, biking or just lounge around and hang out. In the spring, there are cherry blossoms too. Fairmount is definitely a way above average city park.

Truly one of the greatest gems in Philadelphia. If you need a place to disconnect from the grind of the city, this is the place to go. If you are looking for wooded trails, creeks, ponds, flat paths or giant fields you will find them here.

Ask the Community - Fairmount Park

Is this a good park to go rollerblading at during spring and summer?

Yes, it is. Fairmount Park is expansive and in the spring and summer you can rollerblade along the riverbanks of Kelly Drive with fellow walkers, joggers, bike riders and boat rowers. Enjoy!

It is a great moment to just take in the peaceful energy. I love this place and parks like it in general. Everyone is just out enjoying life: Kids playing basketball, friends having picnics, people playing tennis, others reading a book or taking a calm walk with their airpods in, dogs running around the dog park while their owners watch from the sidelines, etc. The kids playing basketball always gets me a little emotional because that used to be me and my friends before the responsibilities of adulthood caused my cortisol levels to go through the roof. All we cared about was playing basketball and having fun. It's like a little time portal to the past. The FMC tower watches over the park, reflecting the sky. I always get fascinated with buildings like this and it makes me appreciate human beings. Like we just built that thing no problem. Wild. I can't close out this review without shouting out running. I could be spiraling into the abyss of negative thoughts and force myself to go for a run, and it completely alters my brain chemistry. I feel like I can do anything after a run. While the festive decorations and activities are lovely, the park was quite crowded, while we were there. Also, the bathroom trailer was absolutely disgusting, despite a small team of custodial employees on site, so plan on holding it while you're there if you can! All in all, Franklin Square was a pleasant diversion, I wouldn't make a special trip to visit.

Once you're on the trails it gets surprisingly quiet. Like, noticeably quieter than you'd expect from somewhere still technically inside Philadelphia. The paths are mostly flat gravel so it's not a hard walk at all. I tend to stop on the boardwalks and just look out over the marsh for a few minutes. Last time there were a few turtles lined up on a log, and I'm pretty sure I spotted a couple of herons near the water too. You do hear planes since the airport's close by, but it doesn't really bother me. Kind of adds to the strangeness of the place in a way I actually like. One thing worth knowing: the mosquitoes are no joke. I skipped bug spray once and regretted it pretty quickly. If you're going in summer, just bring some, especially if you're planning to hang around near the water.

Hard to rate an entire park this massive, but all things considered, after 5 years of traversing the trails here, this is an awesome park. Note that I live in U-City, so the fact that such a massive trail system exists in only a ~20 minute drive, depending on which part of the park I start in, is a blessing and keeps my sanity. Friends of Wissahickon does a great job maintaining trails and even expanding the system over the past few years. I don't think I've ever observed an unseemly part of the park. Definitely unseemly times of year like the snow thaw or the time between the trees dying and the snow falling, but otherwise, this park is beautiful all times of year. I've never had a hard time parking, never even had trouble with crowds even around the most popular trails (ex. Forbidden Drive). Even the bikers are friendly and patient here! Would strongly recommend not only visiting but coming back to keep exploring! I'm still finding new gems in this massive trail system.

What I've known about Devil's Pool is that it's been a popular hangout spot, especially for teens and young adults--swimming, drinking, smoking, etc. But I wasn't prepared for how disappointing the trail would be. At nearly every turn, there was trash--plastic bottles, wrappers, and even entire black garbage bags just left behind. The closer I got to Devil's Pool, the worse it got. There are clear signs asking visitors to take their trash with them, yet so many clearly don't. It's really disheartening to see such a beautiful natural space disrespected like that. Instead of feeling peaceful or connected to nature, it honestly felt a bit unsanitary and neglected. Wissahickon Park deserves better. If you visit, please respect the space and take out everything you bring in.
