The Wilson Academy

The Wilson Academy

(1 review)

We searched for positive or negative reviews prior to enrolling but didn't find anything to give us…read moreguidance. We hope this will help someone. The Wilson Academy is actually located at 2360 Covington Hwy Sw Conyers, GA they used to be located in Lithonia. Our 1st impression of the school for our 2 children was largely positive all because we meet with the wonderful Mrs. Smith (a phenomenal k-3 grade teacher) in our 1st in-person meeting. She was everything we could ask for an more in a elementary school teacher. The school seemed to be perfect and we couldn't understand why it wasn't packed with more students and a abundance of teachers/staff. We where given the speech about the owner/principal Mr. Byron and the success that he had with his own daughter that graduated at the age of 14 and attended Spellman College. After enrolling in the 2025/26 school year we where 3 months in and found out why the school wasn't talked about or had an overwhelming support from the community. It was a normal drop off morning as we were dropping off our kids to school when they were meet by a security officer that had a clip board which was of children names that hadn't paid by the due date of the 1st......so 3 days later kids were being turned away at the door that came dressed and ready for school but was being denied an education and sent back home. It was like the kids were going into a nightclub and they where being denied entry because they were on this list. You really had to be there to see this awful site. The owner wasn't there and security loudly told us that we needed to call him to get clarification. We were instructed to pull over and park and call, we called and called with our kids patiently waiting for a call back for 30 min, we finally spoke with him and told him we had planned to pay on the following day and his response was that's fine the kids can miss 1 day and it was this act of insensitivity that he portrayed that gave a perception that he was not about the kids but about the money. He was basically saying that because you were 3 days late your child can no longer be educated by his school until full payment was done. We did make the payment the same day but the damage had been done. We scrambled to get the funds and sent it by Zelle and were extremely inconvenience. According to the information that is given out when enrolling it states that after 30 days you child maybe denied entry for late and unpaid accounts. This was not our case here. We also initially asked for payments to be on a certain day but was told that we had to pay on the 1st by way of automatic debit site. If we had gotten a phone call of this prior to bringing the kids to school it would have been better than this scenario which seemed inhumane, and please understand that many kids where turned away for the same reasons (I pray their families where able to get payments in). Based off the amount we where paying and how we where treated that day we made our decision to leave. Yes there where other issues that lead up to this that we saw in the school but we overlooked to try and work with a black owner. If the head of an organization believes this is ok then we have to believe that this operation of belief sets up a horrible system that we don't want to be apart of.

As a veteran teacher of the school, I know that the entire administration treats all of their employees with nothing but kindness and respect. The school provides an outstanding education for families in Atlanta's surrounding communities. Like most private schools, they hold their staff to very high standards, but nonetheless standards that are achievable for teachers who are passionate, present, hardworking, and truly want to teach. From what I have witnessed, they believe teachers should educate their students because it is their passion. I can imagine that as a prospective parent, you would want nothing less. Ms. Lambert-Johnson and the rest of the administration work harder than any other team I have had the privilege of working with. They take pride in the school and believe that all of their children deserve a quality education. They are genuinely involved with their staff's well-being and want nothing but the best for all of the individuals that they connect with each day. Ms. Lambert- Johnson and the administration take the time and effort to get to know each employee and honor their beliefs, philosophies, and interests. If teachers have a suggestion, they are receptive and respectful to their ideas. If they have been stern with an employee or given a consequence, it is because that employee's actions were not in the best interest of the child. Like all great places of work, the administration's prerogative is simple - do your job well because the families we work for deserve it. I believe that these negative reviews are a reflection of one disgruntled employee's feelings, and it is so disappointing that an educator would feel the need to degrade someone who gives their heart and soul to the school and all of the people who belong to it. I am proud to be a former teacher of the Academy of Scholars and would highly recommend it to fellow educators and families. I pray that if you have seen a negative review, you look beyond it and get to know The Academy of Scholars and the administration for who they truly are- a community of educators who are interested in nothing but educating children to their fullest potential in the most nurturing and supportive environment possible.

My daughter went to The Academy of Scholars and our experience wasn't the best. She started school…read moreabout six weeks late (which was required by the school since she was a new student to the area. I also wasn't told this until a couple of weeks before school started which was unacceptable), which I knew would be a challenge, but I expected more support from the school to help her get on track. Instead, there wasn't much communication or a real plan to catch her up. Her grades started slipping, especially in math, which has always been her strongest subject. I kept waiting for the school to step in with extra help or at least keep me in the loop, but that didn't really happen. It felt like they just let her struggle instead of working with us to make sure she succeeded. I was asked to email my concerns to the head of school in Jan of 2025. I am still waiting for a response and it's now a new school year. You have to let them know by February if your child will be coming back in the new school year if not you will be stuck in your contract and required to pay regardless of enrollment status. In waiting for a response, I went ahead and submitted a request to pull my child from enrollment for the next year. I assume that lead to their lack of support and interest in my child's education. I wanted this to be a good fit, but the lack of support and communication from the staff made it really frustrating. Families need a school that actually partners with them, and unfortunately that wasn't our experience here.

Not sure what to say about this school because of the new principal. Apparently, the previous years…read morehave been disastrous with building & grounds upkeep, education expectations, school programs, and more. I learned a lot from the other parents at the first parent/principal meeting of the year. Since my boyfriend's son began attending here, I've noticed there have been A/C problems, shortages of bus drivers (meaning there have been doubled routes), and other slight inconsistencies that concern most parents... myself included. However, all of these concerns were addressed at the parent/principal meetings I have attended. Seems the parents who have children that attended there the previous years have been extremely dissatisfied with the previous principal and the lack of interest for any of the parents' concerns about the children fighting, electric problems and whatnot. Now that there is a new principal and she seems genuinely concerned with all these things, it seems the parents are a lot more satisfied with the way the school is now being run. There is still a bus driver shortage and the parking lot gravel is still horrible, but at the moment those issues are out of her control.

They rather jump to conclusions before even looking into the matter accordingly . Multiple complaints have been made while all the people who are supposed to protect your kids while in their care turns a blind eye without any concern. Today a fight erupted at the school bus stop which ended with my nephew in the hospital. Now the school justified the action and did not have any kind of empathy on the injured child. Everything is shoved under the rug while they go about their day!
