It's a small-town stop for sure as I've seen them chatting it up with the locals. But if I had to work a full-day shift here, I probably wouldn't be all "bright and cheery" to every gas pumper that showed up either. Bottom line: Island Beverage does the convenience store job and that's all it really does.

You can't call these folks on the phone for a simple price quote without getting dissed because they have a "line" waiting, which could simply have been a, "I've got people waiting, could I put you on hold or could you call back in 30?" But instead was a mocking statement that implied he (Stowe Bev) could easily do without my business and that answering me politely simply wasn't worth the several seconds it would take to do. Never mind the argument the staff person posed when "correcting" me as to how long it takes me to drive from my house in Waterbury to the store front (30 minutes, but he corrected me, assumedly knowing better than I do where I live, and said, "It only takes 15 minutes to get here from Waterbury . . . . ." which is patently incorrect, even if you have no traffic and break all the speed limits. Rude. Dismissive. Imperious (in the extreme). Short sighted (when the tourist business dries up, as it does from time to time (economy, pandemics, shortages), you'll be looking to the locals to keep you afloat. Hopefully, we'll have better things to do - like patronize someone else. Stowe Bev, wake up. You're not the only show in town.

One thing they have here, and quite popular in Vermont, is a selection of filtered coffee from "Green Mountain Coffee". To offer it, the have isolated coffee pots to keep the various kind hot, One thing that I worry in those cases is how long ago was this coffee made? Well, I noticed that these pots have little displays with indicators that lets you know how long ago the coffee was made! The place is not really a track stop but some trucks come here and there are diesel pumps for it,

It's close proximity to the border (roughly 10 miles) and their clean washrooms plus snack selection make it a good stop for us and help serve our needs. Gas was $2.49 a gallon on my stop for 87 octane which is a steal compared to the $1.20 we pay roughly a L in Quebec. They do also have free WIFI that there is no password to login to. On the way back home I was very pleased to pick up two 12 packs of Harpoon beer for $15.99 each. Harpoon is an awesome beer that Is Vermont/Boston brewed. They call it a New England IPA. If you like Sam Adams give Harpoon a try. Sure there is a closer gas station to the border but we enjoy hitting up this one in St Albans and will keep on doing so in our travels in the future!

The gas prices were decent enough, and the station was laid out in an organized fashion and was clean. What struck me most was the convenience store here (Maplefields). It was quite large, immaculate inside, with a huge assortment of fresh foods (sandwiches, baked items, salads) and beverages. I thought to myself, if I had to use the washroom (which, thankfully, I didn't, I wouldn't hesitate about asking to use the bathroom here. Note that I usually avoid gas station bathrooms LIKE THE PLAGUE. But here, the store was so clean and orderly, I'd use the washroom in a heartbeat if needed). I saw some beautifully packaged Vermont maple syrup on sale for a super price, and I got a few for gifts for friends back in Seattle, along with some fresh foods for the road for the kiddies and excellent coffee for myself.
