Oh my gosh, what a fun store. So many beautiful things! I went out of my way to find this based on someone else's review, and I'm so glad I did. The owner is lovely and I felt like a kid in a candy store. read more

Can't find an appropriate airmail envelope at the post office? That was my experience this morning…read moreat both my local post and the main post office around the corner from the Stadthaus. Fortunately, I remembered this fab, four-story, paper goods-and-more-store was just a few blocks away from where I was and went straight there. As usual, I was greeted immediately upon entering the shop and took notice of how the employees seemed ready to jump in and help could I not manage to find my way to the parcels and packaging area. Zumstein is very well 'signed', so one needn't wander aimlessly from floor to floor looking for that one special item unless one really wants to do so. I've done that, too, and it's sort of a magically journey through office supplies, art supplies, and mailing supplies (they also have a parcel service, but I didn't get the specifics on it). As has already been mentioned in other posts, the employees are professional and helpful. I usually feel very well taken care of when I'm in Zumstein. This place is a must-visit for anyone who needs to post an item, write a letter, make a bit of art and then some.

Been coming here for years, cause you're always guaranteed to find something when you need a gift…read morefor someone. And not just any old gift. I prefer to give gifts that make people laugh or cringe or something, which Ars Longa can usually cover. Lots of gags and funky trinkets interspersed with serious but still cool stuff like colorful dishes or reindeer antler coat hooks, etc. It's small and tight, so don't wear a backpack unless you want to pay for everything you knock off the shelves. And a little pricey. But always delivers.

One of my favorite small gadget store in Kreis 5 !…read more You will find this store on the Josefstrasse. You have to enter the place via the back of the house. They sell a lot of kitchen stuff, home decorations, gadgets, Freitag bags, and some clothes. The store is really not full. It is all cool stuff (hipsterish). I always come here to buy a card, birthday, wedding, etc... They really have a cool selection. Or just for a present. If you don't know what to buy, you will for sure find something here for your hipsterfriend :) PS: walk around on the street in this area, you will find other nice small stores.

So naturally I ventured in and was in awe about all the signs they had an mostly fairly reasonable prices for what it's worth. I'm not going to be that jackass who pulls the 'yeah, I was into Freitag back in the late 1990's'…read more Instead I've only been buying their products for the past ten years. Am I still kind of a jackass for writing that? Probably. Anyway, I've recently had the pleasure of visiting the 'mothership' Freitag shop here in Zuerich. I've only ever visited the super bitchin' Hamburg shop that, in the spirit of Boxpark in LDN, is housed in a large freight container. Of course, Freitag sells at other shops around the US like Flight 001, a shop I used to frequent on Berkeley's 4th St., but going to the source and having a good poke around has a certain satisfaction. I went with the hubs a few days back and perused the wallets. They have at least three different types plus a credit card holder resembling a small bi-fold. The wallet model called 'Miranda' caught my eye as it seemed to be built especially for a the mounds of change that one accumulates here in one's pockets. It was ungodly expensive (I'm embarrassed to write how much, but let's just say it was purchased for me as a birthday present as that's the only way I could marginally justify the cost). Beyond the tarp/seat belt/bike tire concoctions, Freitag have branched out into quite fancy-looking women's shoulder bags and totes. I am impressed by their ability to render tarpaulin-made objects into something so refined, but I didn't dare look at the price tags for these Park Avenue-looking wonders. The structure of the shop is a marvel made out of a cluster of freight containers. -get a gander of this wonder as you pass by on the train coming into town. I found the service at Freitag to be fairly casual; the shop assistant who dealt with me was quite warm and friendly. After a bit of struggle trying to understand her 'rein' Dialekt, I mentioned that I hadn't caught all of what she'd said. 'Ah! Sie moechten, dass ich Hochdeutsch rede?' Yes, please. And on we continued.
Note: this review is only for coffee service at the bar…read more I've been a few times already to the bar of the Markthalle resto for a cafe crema or two and a schale. The schale is akin to a bitchin' latte a la 'third wave coffee' and, three times now, I've been very happy with both the flavor and the appearance. If you're a bit of a coffee snob, and wandering around the Markthalle (trams 4, 17, 13/Dammweg stop), then order a Schale at the bar. You'll probably be happy that you did so! During the day, there usually only seems to be one person working the bar (which is of fairly decent size) that also services the floor, so you may have a wee wait when ordering your drink.
