I'm writing this assuming anybody interested is an American on vacation. Anyway…read more.. This is the best breakfast (best meal, really) I had in Amsterdam in my short time there. Everybody makes a big deal about the "Dutch pancakes" at the restaurants along the canals but personally the last thing I want is a gigantic pancake (sweet or savory) before spending the entire day walking around as a tourist. The food here is filling without being overly heavy and didn't feel unreasonably priced like one might find in the more touristy areas on the south side of the Ij. We had the "Egg with Bread" and the Shakshouka (which also comes with bread) and they were both delicious. The Shakshouka was by no means authentic but it was unique. The sauce and eggs were perfect and the whole thing was loaded with greens and eggplant. The Egg with Bread is exactly what it sounds like, fried eggs on a thick slice of bread with melted cheese and chives. Very simple, perfectly cooked with high quality ingredients. We also had the mint and ginger teas which are both house made (i.e. no teabags) and were served dangerously hot (think McDonald's lawsuit hot) which is exactly how I like it. We actually went there for breakfast twice. On the second, two days after the first, the staff recognized us and the chef came out to apologize for forgetting the eggplant in the Shakshouka and made sure to add extra. Well worth the short trip away from the city center.

Near our hotel, we found this cute little cafe. My friend and I wanted to have a light breakfast…read moreand this was perfect! We ordered the omelette and egg fried sandwich with some cappuccino. Honestly , the food was so delicious, you can even taste the high quality ingredients compared to America. This was 11/10! The service was excellent, everyone was very friendly and attentive. Would highly recommend and definitely coming back again to this place!

This is a review of the SOOP - a weekly swing dancing party that happens in Kompaszaal on Fridays…read morestarting at 9PM. This is not the review of the establishment that I would described as having great views from the balcony, minimalist interiors, friendly service. Logistics: during the summer, the DJ music party is free; this is what I have attended. At other times, party goes to live music and has an admittance fees, presumably. The place is on the outskirts of the central Amsterdam; the Uber trips to and from the touristy areas will cost 10-14 Euros or less. The dancing floor is pretty large, but subdivided into square-shaped areas by a set of columns. There was more than enough space with the summer DJ crowd (about 70 dancers), I expect thing to get more cozy when the live music is playing. The floor is pretty smooth and stone-looking with no grouts (plastic, I presume), your dance shoes will work well. The music selection on the night I have visited was excellent, with proper balance of tempos and styles. The crowd appears to be very skilled, more than half the follows I have danced with were way above my skill level, practically all of them were quite good with very few beginners. There were significantly more follows than leads, but not disastrously so, still, if you are an out-of-town follow, consider bringing your own lead. Overall, a must-visit event for a swing dancer visiting Amsterdam. For a reasonably skilled lead, a chance to dance with some truly great followers.
