This is me being honest and I know I'll get snarked but I don't really care.
This is just my story. I've never made it public until now. I suffered from a very severe case of an Anxiety disorder brought on by immense stress. I was a depressed alcoholic for 6+ years. I drank a liter [or more] of Skyy vodka daily. My IRS audits, and financial troubles had created such bad anxiety that I only found escapism through the bottle, then benzodiazepines [Xanax and the like], then anything else to quelch such anxiety. I wasn't helpful to my family, my 5 year old didn't have a full time father as I was trying to sulk more than anything. AA didn't work, it made it worse. I drank more. I even moved to Wisconsin [where there are lots of alcoholic programs] for a few years to try to fix it. I was in full belief that I was a lost cause.
I always used to be bored out of my skull at any Church, with the only exception in my life being C3. I grew up Lutheran, got married in a Baptist Church, my inlaws are Catholic and Pentecostal and my wife and I went to a non-denominational church for a long time. Most of the time though, going to Church meant that I should get ready for a snoozer. Sorry God, no offense to you, but there are folks out there that deliver a sermon in the same fashion it was delivered 200 years ago... cryptic and all. Even my fellow Christians may take issue with this statement. But it's true. People who aren't church-goers tell me they just don't like how boring things are. But C3 has an App for that!
I'm a 40-ish year old that came from the tech industry so my attention span is like next to zero.
C3 is different. For one, it's modern. That may not be for you if you are looking for a very staid, traditional church. It's fine if those people are, but the not-so-kind yelp reviews with some disagreement about this actually points out the biggest asset C3 actually has: it's different and innovative and will keep you engaged, even if you are as cynical as I was.
Yes there's modern music and not the deep rhythmic hymns I hated as a kid. There's no pressure to tithe [ in fact, most of the time they raise the point that God should put in your heart what to give and they have never, ever, in the years we've now been going, been aggressive about an offering. In fact, it's the least pressure I've ever felt from any church, which actually makes you want to give more because it's something I want to do, -- it's not a used car lot asking for money].
Pastor Mark S and Pastor Mark McGovern and Pastor Gail are speaking in plain speak. No babble. It's something that I can understand. I have a master's degree so I'm not terribly stupid but honestly the overarching push that many churches have to over-elaborate through complex dialogue, geographies of the Middle East and the focus on how sinful I am and I should feel like crap for my sins was taking it's toll on me.
C3 reiterates this with every sermon: God loves us. The Pastors love us. The congregation loves us. You can be a creep and still be ok. ;-) Today, I am very, very happy. I have C3, my wife, my daughter and my in-laws all supporting me. I have been alcohol free for some time and continue to be. My drug addictions ended.
After such happy messages about how everyone loves us [the congregation, the Pastors, and everyone is always shaking your hand, getting to know you, sharing their story - i can't describe the community feeling there] - there's no question that for me, it's nothing less than a miracle. But it's not. What was it? It was love. That's God, that's the Church and that's the Congregation. We all go through tough times, some of us live in it yearly.
Only God provides Miracles - but I found out I didn't need one. I've ever been a recipient except for when I got married and when my daughter was born. Other than that, I get cheated out of a free prize in my cereal box everytime. I pray for Miracles now a lot - but I pray for them to happen to other people who really need them.
Turns out I actually didn't need a Miracle. I needed love, and people to understand my complexities. They did that and more. All 3 Pastors, the church family and staff give you the time - the energy - and themselves, to help you. Somedays I just need a hug and to be told it's ok. Childish I know. But if you don't need that you are a better person than I. They embrace me, my family - my daughter - in a modern way.
My 65 year old parents LOVE this church as well - though they live too far to go. The gift that God gave to them was the C3 Podcasts. So even older members of us earthlings like modern.
For people like me, this one analogy will make it all make sense. C3 is an iPhone 5S with free 4G + LTE access. Other Churches I have gone to are a sluggish 80s Motorola flip phone.
While some like more traditions, I totally support that! It's ok. For me, though, I'll stick to the the love from C3. read more
