One of the oldest and largest comic shops in Portland. This is strictly a comic shop, so don't expect to find action figures, Funko POPS or gaming cards. They just carry new and back issues and trades. That being said their selection of what they do carry is one of the better selections in Portland. I have seen people comment that they find the staff standoffish or not very friendly. I've went in for years, and I've always found Debbie and the regular staff very friendly. There are a few people that work there that I wouldn't call them unfriendly just not very personable. But everyone there knows their stuff and will help anyone with questions or if they're looking for anything in particular. They do have a small selection of one dollar overstock books as well as their rather large selection of back issues. Once upon a time, you could really find some good deals on back issues or even newer variants. However, recently, they seem to be priced at full market value and more times than not. I've been able to find identical things for cheaper online even with shipping. That's not a knock, but if you're a bargain,hunter or reseller while you might be able to find what you're looking for here, there won't be any fabulous deals. They do however run multiple 50% off sales over the course of the year so deals can still be had if you are patient enough and if you're ready to be there Friday morning when they first open because it is a feeding frenzy every time lol read more

Do not let her or him separate you from your comics. That's the first thing she tries to do. She tries to get you to leave them there without you being there. Then she'll say I have to take this pile over to the comic section to see if we have them or not. A I caught her sliding my comics in the section he then will take a pile and go to the opposite side of the store and do the same thing I caught him sliding some of my comics behind the counter. I confronted them. Luckily I videotaped my packing them up and have an inventory of what I took as well as witnesses and dashcam of my driving there and video of my interactions at the store. I'll be going to the DA's office First thing Monday. I took 615 comics there in mint condition she offered $200 for over 220 less than a dollar apiece several of my comics are worth hundreds. I told her I could not do that less than a dollar apiece but I'm going home and checking my inventory list. Absolutely terrible people and dishonest. Awful. read more

Sold some books here from my old collection, the few they were interested in. Very open about only paying 25% of their anticipated retail, which seems awfully low compared to how resale works in literally every other industry, but hopefully someone on the other side will end up getting a deal. Ultimately if I wanted to maximize profit, I'd be going to eBay. Neat place. Was there several weeks ago while killing some time. They have a HUGE assortment of graphic novels available. If I lived in Portland, I wouldn't have to go to Amazon to find these. All in alphabetically order. The people working there seemed knowledgeable and nice. They were looking to buy comics from a customer and were sorting them as they talked about comic book storylines. There are a lot of boxes assorted alphabetically, too. I am missing some of the first series of Guardians of the Galaxy and was able to pick up one of them for $3.00. That's pretty reasonable. I saw a lot of others (I glanced through the X-Men for a bit) and they were kind of expensive. So you do have to keep an eye on that. The individual comic selection was decent. No Thunderstrike (they had a tab for it, but didn't have any), but he's an obscure character that has long since been dead. I couldn't look through more of the "G" section because a woman was organizing about 5 boxes next to me. I wanted to check on Galactus books but although I waited for a bit, she never seemed to notice me or look up at me so I didn't get a chance. Overall, I think the selection was just fine. The graphic novels selection was very good. The people at the counter seemed to be having a good time talking with customers about a variety of comic book topics. The pricing was hit and miss depending on what you are looking for. And really, you just can't have everything, so I was okay with some characters not having any books handy. I was able to get 1 book to help fill my collection -- and this is the first non-graphic novel I've purchased in years. If I lived in Portland, I would probably go back. Especially since they buy comics and that helps to increase the older stock they may have been missing. read more

Yesterday evening was my first visit, courtesy of a recommendation of a good friend, of this store. I am not what you would call anything close to an expert on graphic novels but I've had a few thrown my way over the years that I was pleased at the beauty of the artwork and how well the writing complimented them so on this day my friend suggested we visit this store. I have to say the people there were incredible. Not only by not being jerks about me not knowing my head from a hole in the ground on what's good and what's fluff but engaging in conversation about good writing, listening and asking questions about what I liked to create a starting point for what I think is going to be a genre I really fall in love with at the age of 45. I'll be back and highly recommend this place. It's legit and the staff appreciates people of all levels of knowledge here. Thank you for not trying to make me feel like an idiot! :) read more

Excalibur doesn't have the personality or quirkiness of my favorite comic shops, but when it comes to being well stocked and well organized this place ain't fooling around. When last I ventured in to this Hawthorne hideout they had everything I set out to find, everything. So maybe it's not a spot I'd go to chill for a few hours (Powell's seems like a good place for that), but if there's an elusive issue that needs locating, I'm heading here first. read more

The last time I was here, the woman working was so snotty and rude (picture your horrible comic book nerd archetype, except in female form), that I walked out without buying the book I wanted. I went and bought it from another bookstore in town, for cheaper and without anyone hassling me. This has been my go-to comic book store since I picked the habit back up a few years ago. I've had a box here off and on - but it's mostly been off with the change in the economy, though I have stopped by because of their convenient hours recently to pick up issues of books I needed to write a review. Last time I was requesting the first issue of an Oni Press book Stumptown, and the owner sold me her last (and personal) copy. It absolutely made my day! This is the place to go to pick up back issues of the major books and I'm a huge fan of their 50% off sales. Cons: All the books are sealed before you buy them, so no browsing, and the atmosphere is not conducive to hanging out. But all that space is taken up by comic goodness, so it's hard to complain. This is a weekend visit store for me - for when I'm hunting down something very specific. Or a last ditch week-day night visit cause many of the other stores close early. read more

While Excalibur has an immaculate set up and huge back catalog, prepare to pay top price for everything you buy and don't expect everything that's been bagged and boarded to be in good condition. Last time I went there, two of the five books I bought were creased and scuffed - which I didn't find out until I got home - and with their "check your bag at the door and hope some guy doesn't run out with it - mentality makes you uneasy about examining your merch beforehand. You never get the sense you can get into a conversation about comics with the people behind the counter the way you can at, say, Floating World in Chinatown or Cosmic Monkey further east. I like to feel like I'm in good company, not monitored like I'm either gonna steal something or walk out without making a purchase. I get the sense other more frequent visitors have a good report with the owners so take that within a grain of salt, but personally that's the vibe I get. This may change in the future. All in all, if you really need something specific, chances are this store has it or can get it for you. read more

Since I was overwhelmed when I walked into Excalibur, I really appreciated the help from the gentlemen who was working that day. He was full of great recommendations, gave me reviews on stuff I was asking about and that he was familiar with and he took the time to tell me about upcoming events at the store. He never once made me feel rushed or even intimidated for asking about certain series and novels. I picked up a series he wasn't too familiar with because he hasn't had the chance to read it yet and he said to me "just pick it up and flip through it, see if it speaks to you." I really appreciated his attentiveness. They have this store very organized but it is PACKED full of comic books galore and bookcases and bookcases full of graphic novels. TL;DR summary: BUY ALL YOUR COMICS HERE! Had a stellar experience selling here. Owners & staff are super friendly, super knowledgeable, and LOVE comics. Backstory: When my dad died a couple years ago, I inherited his not inconsiderable collection of original Marvel Comics from the early '60s. We're talking key early run issues of some key series: Avengers, X-Men, among others. All in fairly good shape, though not mint. Single owner collection, since my dad was a bit of a hoarder, and kept them all from the moment he bought them off a newsstand by Wrigley Field, and then in the '80s once he heard that they might be valuable, moved them to Ziplocs in a safety deposit box where they sat until 2016. The process to get them officially graded & "slabbed" by CGC is expensive and time consuming (and apparently not really worth it for mid-grade comics, which I could tell these were from CGC criteria online--solid 4-6s on the 10 point scale), so after a family friend helped me get them properly stored in mylar with acid free backboards, I visited Excalibur with a few samples from the collection. From the moment I walked in, I had good vibes. I could tell that the staff (especially Shawn, who was my main contact point there) was excited to see these books, not principally for their monetary value, but because they just LOVE comics, the history of comics, and the pleasure of looking at a good book. They were up front with me: they have to buy for less than market value, because that's what makes business sense. For low value comics, that's about 25%, but for higher value, rare comics that they can move in a day, they are willing to negotiate. My husband and I came back the next day with the whole collection, and Shawn went through each book carefully with me, with an open price guide on the table between us, noting down an estimated value. Again, I could tell he was just excited to get to handle books like these, and he made great conversation with me about printing & subscription practices in the day, common faults like "Marvel chipping" that affects these books in particular, and he was also happy to listen to my stories about how my dad probably bought these right off a newsstand by Wrigley Field in Chicago when he was 14 years old. Then the owner (Debbie, I believe) came in, and we negotiated a price that I was happy with for the whole collection, and she told me how her family opened this place years ago because of her mom's love of comics. Financial concerns aside, I felt good just knowing that these treasures, which were an important part of my dad's childhood, are going to folks who will make sure they wind up with collectors who truly appreciate them. As an extra classy bonus, when we were done negotiating, Shawn came out and gifted me the six mint condition original issues of Star Wars: Dark Empire, which he'd heard me mention as a favorite comic from my childhood. POSTSCRIPT: More class act service--so after depositing the check, I got a notice from my bank that it bounced. My husband went down to ask what had happened, and Debbie was there--apparently they had a bank/computer hack and crisis over the weekend, and she was trying to contact us, but like idiots we didn't leave any information. Even though they had a much bigger problem to deal with, she immediately went to the bank and got him cash, with an extra 2.5% tacked on that he did not ask for just for our trouble. At first visit I loved this place. In updating two of my collections that I started in the early 70's, I found their back issues a vast assortment to get lost in for hours. The first visit I dropped about $80 and was given a 10% discount. This is cool! And then to quote a famous movie line... AND THEN.... The next time, the total came to about $100 (I had a lot of catching up to do on two collections). No discount. Why, I asked? "We don't do that". "Well, you did before!", I countered. "She wasn't supposed to do that". Well, get your $#!% straight, I thought. I stayed away for a couple years after that. I went the online route and was incredibly happy. They were all boarded and bagged (which Excalibur does not, no matter what people have written here), and while there was shipping it was packaged so well it more than made up for it because... I did more searching at Excalibur lately. I found the correct price for issues I wanted and compared that to what they had marked. It was all over the place. Some issues were overpriced by 200-300% from Overstreet and *some* others were marked over 5-6 times below what they were going for in Overstreet. My thing is - be consistent. This just shows me that they aren't really marking them for what they're worth - just slapping an average cost on them. And while some people may think it balances out, it doesn't. I still would have overpaid if I bought them all. I just got the ones they didn't get right. I was also asked to sign up for an email distro to let me know when a 50% discount period would be. In over a year that's never happened. Way bad form on that. But then, I've never received any emails from them. So either they lost it, or it's just a scam. And yes, Dorothy, I did check the spam folder. I know what some people are thinking. The crown jewel was when I went to TRADE a duplicate issue that OS had listed for $400. She said she'd give me $100. A little surprised, I noted this was a TRADE, not selling it. Which means I'd be getting their over priced goods with the TRADE. Nope, that's their percentage. So, by buying it for 25% of value, and then having me buy their already overpriced back issues, they are really making some money! I also won't accept any cajoling, lame explanation, rebuttals, apologies, or other attempts to alter this. I'm done with this place. The old guy behind the counter (if he's still there) was one of the rudest clerks (or possible owner) I've ever encountered. Deb (woman usually there now) has been nice but after the whole trade/email thing I'm taking it more as an act. The other kids working there are just that - kids with attitudes. And they don't put grades on the comics unless CGC - which is complete BS. All in all, there are much better shops out there, and also online. While purists may deride the online thing, I have found no problems with it. With either their grading or their prices. And I've been collecting, trading, selling for over 40 years, so don't appreciate how these kids in the stores treat me like I've just started this up and that they're experts on the business. read more

They have a massive back stock of individual issues and a huge collection of trades and hardcovers. Everything is well kept and clean, and I always get my books in mint condition. In addition to being a box holder there, I am also a freelance illustrator by trade. Excalibur has always treated me and fellow creators with the utmost respect and courtesy. They really make sure we are taken care of and often invite us to take part in community building events. Every now and then, some people slip through the doors and feel neglected or ignored, but I assure you, if you introduce yourself and tell them what you like, they will be happy to talk to you and help you find the perfect story. I can't speak to the purchasing, just the selling to. I took in my collection for sale. The owner looked, conferred with employees, and indicated interest in purchasing several hundred. Then came five minutes of punching numbers on an old ten-pad. It would have taken less time to total the pounds of hops used in Portland brewing over the past annual calendar. Well, he said, I could give you $80. What!? After all that math!? Why so little? He claimed that he could only pay a quarter each for some of them (less than 5% of it). Fine, but what about the others? He said nothing else, perhaps not wishing to indicate which were valuable. I would have been happy to negotiate, but we weren't even close. Also, its buyer beware when the seller asymmetric advantages (far better knowledge of popularity and prices, me not wanting having to pack them back up if I didn't close the sale) for a profitable sale. All of the staff here are extremely nice and helpful. When i was discussing graphic novels with one of the clerks i mentioned a series i liked that i thought had never been finished, but the clerk knew of it, looked it up to find out if any more had been released and then ordered me the one i didn't have. Each of the 4 clerks i have dealt with have been very friendly and helpful. They even have a couple of bookshelves dedicated entirely to independent publishers (Oni Press being my favorite), and they cary a lot of limited edition and hard to find graphic novels and hardcovers. read more

Loved this store. It's 100% comic books and that's perfect. The current selection looks great and the employees are friendly without being intrusively so. The back issues are just phenomenal. Over a quarter century of collecting comics and this is THE most organized and well maintained comic store I have ever set foot in. My wife even commented on the organization and that says something! The Silver and Bronze Age comics are along the front of the store. The higher priced are on the wall or inside the glass case. Unfortunately, it looks like the lights in the store are causing a bit of fade on the wall comics, a lesson my grandparents learned when they owned there comic store in the 80s and 90s. However, they have a solid section of boxes on the counter filled with silver age and Bronze Age comics! Just fantastic to look through. The more current, or less pricey, back issues take up a majority of the store. They are labeled clearly and concisely and it looks like no matter how hard Marvel and DC try to muck up there continuity with a restart every 20 issues (Wolverine Vol. 7 folks!), this store has it in check. I have been searching for a comic book shop to call home and I found it! Even though it is a 30 min drive for me from Gresham, it is well worth the time. Sean (I believe that was his name) treated me like I was someone special and went above and beyond to assist me. Knowledgeable, and direct, he had me walking out with Old Man Logan and Immortal Hulk as well as a box and a new loyal customer. They treated me with dignity and respect as a Veteran and as a comic book fan that sides with the dysfunctional characters. I can't recommend this store enough. And judging by the amount of people and how busy they were my review can't be far off the mark. My husband and I came here after getting a late start for comic book Wednesday. (They were the only comic book store in Portland open until 8, yay!!) HOLY BACK ISSUES!!! It was so awesomely overwhelming! We found so many things that we have been trying to add to our collection. The hardest part was trying to figure out where to start. Huge back issue stocks. However, boxes are very full which makes it harder to flip through the books. Although comics are bagged and boarded, they are by no means in decent shape. Why put bag and boards on those beat up dreks? It seems like they're asking us to pay for the time they spent bagging and boarding their inventory. Their wall books are over graded and waaaaay over priced. Maybe better to go with eBay. The shop appears to be a family owned business, staff tries to be friendly and helpful. read more
