This painting is known all over the world--whether you're religious or not, it's hard to NOT know this painting. Seeing it in person is just as breathtaking as expected. Highly recommend: set your calendar and book tickets at the earliest time 3 months in advance! Though you can hire a tour guide, I didn't find it necessary, since I found everything I needed to know about the Last Supper via AI. Since tickets are strictly timed, show up a bit earlier than your slot. Tickets allot a 15-minute viewing time. Once the 15-minutes are up, you WILL be escorted as a group out to allow for the next group.

It's quieter and more peaceful compared to the city center. We came mostly for The Last Supper painting. We booked our tickets months in advance through Get Your Guide. Our tour guide was awesome and we got to know the history of the church and the materials used by Leonardo da Vinci in his paintings. When you get inside the refectory, they only let a small number of people inside for 15 minutes at a time. Once your time is up, you exit while the next group comes in for their 15 minutes. And the same process repeats itself. Just know that there is a no flash policy when taking pictures of The Last Supper to preserve the paining.

Your first view is a huge building (The Famedio) which runs the width of the cemetery and includes space inside for urns and memorials. This building does not look like your typical mausoleum with it's raised center structure and 'wings' going off in either direction. The top gallery both left and right are filled with crypts, statues and monuments. This is were some of Milan's most note worth citizens are entombed with honor. There are a number of placards detailing information on the deceased and the artists who designed their final resting place. Some of the niches, where ashes are stored along the walls, are covered by cobwebs and are quite old. It really is worth a look around. If you go to your left, just past the entrance (after the guard office) is a smaller building that includes more niches and an information desk is behind the door on the right. Public restrooms are also located in this entrance area. Just look for the signs or ask at information. If you walk directly through the main building (The Famedio), under the arched entrance to the grounds, you find a garden layout that begins with a semi-circular open area and boulevards running straight back with cross paths. On the outer edges, left and right, are raised areas that are more like a traditional graveyard. Even rows of headstones. The headstones here may be smaller, but they are still beautiful. In the center and toward the rear you will find huge family mausoleums and/or obelisk type monuments as well as individual burial sites. Some monuments are to a scale that one would expect in a cemetery while others are enormous monuments to families. The headstone and monument styles range from classical to modern and are often based on when the monument was installed with a number of famous sculptors works. Many of the burial sites include photographs of the deceased and as well as beautiful sentiments. Some are quite sad and lovely. Trees are scattered throughout this center area making it a cool, shady spot on a sunny day. There are water fountains (those 'little widows' that dot the city) throughout the grounds with watering cans available for families to tend the flowers they leave. If you have a water bottle you can fill it here. Bicycle parking is available just inside the gate, a trolley stop is located across the street to the left (walk to your right as you exit the cemetery) and a metro stop out front. The guards can be a little, 'cranky' shall we say, but they take their responsibility seriously and I can appreciate they have a very important task in keeping this 'sacred ground' while allowing the public to come in to admire the beauty. It really does feel 'holy' and sacred. Respect and quiet are requested in the cemetery making it not only a magnificent memorial to the departed, but also a peaceful respite from the city with foot steps on gravel, and bird song the loudest sound.

The cemetery is huge and you can easily spend a few hours here. Some of the tombstones are gigantic and there are various styles of gravestones ranging from classical to contemporary. The last supper for example resides on the Campari family tomb. There are many trees and gravel paths and some signposts of the most popular sculptures and graves. There was no crowd when we visited & the peacefulness and reminiscence of those who walked this earth was striking.

Fantastic visit to the Duomo di Milon, or Metropolitan Cathedral-Basilica of the Nativity of Saint…read moreMary, during our visit to Italy. It's the largest duomo in Italy (St Peter's is in the Vatican) and we both thought it's the most impressive on the outside. The history of the duomo is fascinating as you will learn about its construction on the tour. BTW, there are basically 3 areas to tour 1) duomo outside and interior 2) exterior roof tour, and an artifacts tour underneath the main floor. Construction began in 1386 and the cathedral wasn't officially completed until the 20th century. The architectural influences in that time are incorporated - medieval, Renaissance and later. Unlike most cathedrals, you can walk extensively across the roof during the roof tour between the flying buttresses, and pinnacles. The roof has 135 spires and thousands of statues, making the exterior astounding! At the top of the central spire stands the famous golden statue of the Virgin Mary, the symbol of Milan. The interior is very unique as well. One of the most unusual features - an astronomical clock built in 1786!At solar noon, sunlight passing through a tiny opening creates a spot of light on the line, allowing the cathedral's astronomers to determine true solar noon. Check it out - you will be glad you did!

I had to leave for another experience and came back later to see the Crypt. Some of the staff gave me a hard time about coming back in, wondering why I needed to leave even though I explained I didn't want to wait for 2 hours in the cathedral. I was able to visit the Crypt, which is only open for a short while. It's a beautiful experience if you're able to fit it in. Taking photos inside the Crypt is prohibited. Outside is very busy so be cautious of pick pockets and scammers...they are everywhere. Toilets are available to one side but for a fee.

This is a huge park that's filled with several of Milan's prominent landmarks as well as a plethora of beautiful green space. The park often holds large events and gatherings. I came during the May Day celebration and watched the live performances and colorful parades. Everyday there was a different live performer in the park, all were so talented and entertaining. The walking paths are fun and relaxing. This is an excellent place to take a walk and admire the scenery around you. I also have to mention how friendly the people are here. I met so many great people at this park, from locals to other visitors. So many amazing picture opportunities here too. The green spaces are so gorgeous! From the ducks swimming in the pond to the lovely wildflowers; there is something for everyone to enjoy here. Your steps away from the castle, the clocktower, and the beautiful arch. So many sculptures in the vicinity to check out as well. Picnics are popular at this park as is people watching. You'll find street vendors on site selling souvenirs, handmade arts and crafts, and delicious street food. I mean, you can never get bored here honestly. There is always something going on and always something to do.

Being Italy's commercial, financial, fashion capital, it just made sense to ONLY reserve a tiny spot for pedestrians to stroll around (young generations prefer to refere to such a past time as "fare una vasca"... which literally means to swim from one end to the next of a pool). Corso Vittorio Emanuele has seen it all... from the opening of McDonald's in the (distant) 80s, to the competition (Burger King) taking over the Duomo location. From an historic landmark (an old cinema called ASTRA) being converted into a store (Zara)... It has hosted many a street performance (break dancing, rapping & freestyle sessions). It has been the go-to place for younger generations that wanted to spend a funny afternoon together (a few cinemas, lots of shopping stores, a few decent food joints). It brings pedestrians from the Duomo square to the San Babila square (from which one can find Via Montenapoleone for some (window) shopping). Though now there are other pedestrian sites along the line (Via Dante and the streets around Sforza Castle, hopefully not limited to the duration of the Expo). When i think of THE pedestrian street of Milan. .. this is what comes to mind.
