I have only the best things to say about this practice. With new management, everything is smoother and more professional.

As a patient who just got discharged the day of writing this, I find just how little we've…read moredeveloped in creating a safe and caring facility for people with disturbed minds or people looking to get clean. The constant reprimands of the staff (specifically at night) would create an increased amount of tension in everyone on the unit. When I was restricted the day before my discharge, I was told I wouldn't be allowed to be going off units for group, fair. I wasn't not at all informed that they would confiscate all (and I mean ALL) of my clothing and possessions including woman's products and clean changes of clothes. And to top it all, when staying on unit while everyone else had left, I was not allowed to communicate or even sit near the other patients who were restricted. I understand that teenagers are not always sound of mind or judgment, but it's extremely hard to see needs not being met such as not opening any bathrooms when we desperately need it and having someone end up urinating on the seat, than it's hard to ignore and push it aside as "teenagers being dramatic". One of the most upsetting things was seeing the life being sucked out of all my peers, as they felt they were not getting the care they were promised to have received while being admitted. Even worse was seeing 14 and 15 year old girls get pumped with so many meds they turn into lethargic zombies. When I would ask what medication they were given, most of the time they were not able to answer. It's disheartening to see a system that I at some pointed wanted to contribute to so badly (I plan/planned on going to school to become an art therapist), turn out to be such a twisted tail. I will admit that there are many staff workers, at least on my unit, that were truly a pleasure to be around and made my experience a little more tolerable, and social workers and doctors (depending on who) seem to truly care about helping stabilizing the minds of the adolescents on unit. In conclusion, the fries are baller!

I have been quite hesitant to write a review about this craphole of a psych hospital but it does…read moreneed to be addressed if it already hasn't been. 8 years ago I had a severe relapse of my neuropsychiatric condition that began back in 2009. 8 years ago I was transferred to this hospital from Stony Brook University hospital and man was I in for a rude awakening! Don't let the outside of the place fool you, disguised as a homely location with flowers and all. The care is very subpar and almost nonexistent. I've never been treated with such disrespect. The nurses were rude and almost had a holier-than-thou attitude about the patients here, it's as almost if they didn't really care at all and was just there for the paycheck. I could not even talk to the medication nurse as she was unbelievably snappy and curt. Even the doctors were unprofessional. They don't fully listen to your immediate concerns, not using careful deductive logic & input from the patient and not only that but over-prescribe you meds that you probably don't even need. (I know I didn't, since then I have successfully tapered off most of those medications, SUCK ON THAT!) I also could not sleep at all because of the other patients making noise and being a constant threat to my safety and sanity. We were often mixed in as general population inmates in a prison and you never know whether you've made a friend or an enemy. Sharing rooms with others was pure hell. The suicide watches were disturbing as someone who is always watching a patient while you're trying to sleep. Who the hell wants someone there watching while you sleep!? Uncomfortable. The front desk would not take your requests seriously, at one point I complained that the heating was set way too hot and they said that the plumbers were working on it. Days later, and we're still in 80 degree heat. Unpleasant. In short, this was no picnic, it was hell. I think I might have actually gotten worse while there, so I opted to leave after 2 or 3 weeks. (thanks to my family and my brother who angrily said to the staff that did not belong there!) I instead preferred to recover at home which provided me the quiet and safety I needed for my unique position as I was very sensitive and am a shy quiet individual. I'm glad to report I am doing much better 8 years later living my best life and can speak freely when I say that this place ABSOLUTELY SUCKS! IT DID NOTHING FOR ME - If you ever have a crisis, DO NOT GO HERE. PERIOD. (I only gave a 2-star review as it wasn't all completely bad. The food was delicious and tasty, almost gourmet. I even enjoyed the turkey sandwiches they brought out after late-night, it was the only thing that calmed me in there. There was also one nurse I remember who was the ONLY one kind enough to treat us with some bit of dignity and respect)

Please read my review below before reading this…read more Further addendum: There were times my social worker, Sasha, (whom even the main unit nurse called "useless" & who maintained I didn't know my own name and who maintained that I had no medical insurance, weirdly aside from Workman's Comp which I certainly did not have for this) was scheduled to be at Brunswick but was not there because she was providing "social work coverage" to South Oaks Hospital. I would have grave concerns for South Oaks patients given the fact that they are next door to Brunswick hospital and share staff. Brunswick & South Oaks patients shared cabs home & I don't believe South Oaks doesn't know what's going on at Brunswick. Furthermore, medical records also appear to show that Sasha took approximately one minute to input each simple "dot phrase" into their Epic computer system, making it such that she seemingly took hours to input basic common discharge language used for every patient. This is likely why Sasha suggested it would add a day or more to my stay should I choose to make a simple change to where I was going upon discharge. One might think that a social worker would suggest they would delay a discharge if the discharge address were changed because they wanted to ensure the discharge was safe, but this was not the case and to my understanding, some patients gave fake discharge addresses. Sasha even admitted that the reason to delay my discharge should I decide to go home instead of to a friend's house was because of a paperwork issue - I didn't realize the paperwork issue was that Sasha barely knows how to use a computer & everything takes her hours. Additionally, Sasha never brought any paperwork or info to the unit and needed me to provide her with phone numbers when I asked her to contact my family, despite the fact that my family had called her and asked her to return their calls. Sasha never called anyone back nor did most of the social workers. My sister informed me that "this was not like a regular hospital" & nobody answers the phone. When I tried to obtain my medical records, I had difficulty reaching anyone at Brunswick and messages went unreturned. Interestingly, the one time the medical records unit picked up the phone to answer my call was immediately after I faxed over various documents. Brunswick also refused to charge what I believe to be reasonable fees for records and refused to send them in any format but paper which I believe to be a HIPAA violation.

She recommended that I take walks (even though I just told her that I did), not watch the news (though she did tell me I should be politically aware and made a political statement about the election), and take two showers a day because those things will "elevate my mood." Most egregious--she prescribed Lexapro and Effexor together. These two meds can cause a rare but potentially fatal condition called serotonin syndrome. She did not mention this and let me make an informed decision about the risk, nor did she mention any side effects I should be on the look out for. To me, this borders on malpractice. I switched to another nurse practitioner in different practice, and she was horrified that I was prescribed this combination of meds and immediately took me off one. There are signs all over about payment and not cancelling appointments. This place felt like it was all about the money with no concern for the level of care.
