When you become regulars, they're usually very good to take care of you in one manner or another. (Please note that I'm not speaking specific to Kappa only, but more in general.) As for my experience at Kappa, it was pleasant enough. Mark-ups weren't as bad as some of the other smaller places I've been to, and I loved the fact that they have house-made prepackaged food available. They also heavily advertise their banchans a lot, which is in line with most of these smaller joints. Koreans call it "son mat" which our trusty AI friend describes it like this: "Son-mat (손맛) is a Korean word that means "hand taste" and is used to describe the unique flavor that comes from a cook's skill, care, and personal touch. It can also refer to the idea of passing down the love and care that mothers put into their cooking to their loved ones." This is especially important because it's what will get your customers coming back for more. The trouble is that these smaller groceries are mainly targeted for locals nearby. I happen to live 90 minutes away, and if I have to do my quarterly Korean grocery shopping, I'm more inclined to go to a bigger chain mart, unless there's a very specific reason to pick one over the other. Im leaving three stars because of coming here for years but this is really disappointing.

It was when we started reading labels and deciding what to buy that we hit a snag. The majority (!) of the products including canned, packaged, and even frozen, were past their sell by date. How could so many products be expired? Either no one shops there, but we noticed several regulars come in while we were there, or, our guess, the store was deliberately stocking expired products to save money. We thanked them, but left without buying.

I was blown away to find that nothing has changed. Think about that: COVID broke the world, but Super Greenland held the line on prices, while still offering fantastic variety and quality. You can still get a bag of 8 of the freshest pitas you've ever eaten for $1.49: they're so fresh the bag still has steam in it. The baba ganoush is smoky and freshly made for only $3.49 a pound. Other deli offerings are similarly priced, and high quality. I'm not exaggerating when I say they have hundreds of spices and seasonings. I don't think twice about spending $4 for 1 ounce of cinnamon sticks at the supermarket; here, $4 gets you 6 ounces of cinnamon sticks. They have an entire aisle devoted to pickled things here. If it can be pickled, they have it here. And, do I have to tell you how much cheaper it is here than anywhere else? Oh, and do you like baklava? Of course you do. The variety of that alone is also impressive. I sometimes forget that this is also a regular grocery store. The produce is high quality, and nicely priced. With all the phenomenal middle eastern things here, I'm strangely disappointed that they also have boring things like Froot Loops, Ragu pasta sauce, and other mundane things. It's sort of like the opposite of the "international aisle" at a normal supermarket. I gave Super Greenland a great review before, but I actually think I sold them short.

There are aisles of Asian goods such as sauces, instant noodles, a refrigerated section of produce, and a freezer case of all types of dumplings, meats, etc. There was also a fun display of figurines near the window, including a Pikachu, which I purchased for my niece. Using both the Yelp app and recommendations from locals, they told me this place serves up legit and surprisingly, bargain priced Viet sammiches. When you walk in, the kitchen portion is near the registers. After perusing the menu, I ordered a number one combo and a chicken, since the roasted pork was sold out (boo!). And I was SHOCKED that in 2024, you can still find a banh mi for $5. In the DC area, you can't find one priced for less than $8.00!!! Tip: you can order your banh mi's either toasted or untoasted. Get the toasted. After approximately 5 minutes a friendly worker came out and presented the number one banh mi, in a foil wrapper. My chicken was not toasted so it was in a plastic bag. I couldn't wait, so I unwrapped the number one combo and literally DEVOURED it in the parking lot. The bread (which they make on premises) was toasty outside, yet had a flaky and soft interior. And while these aren't the biggest sandwiches, there was plenty of meat filling and pickled veggies, with just the right amount of pate smeared. Again, did I mention (as of this review) that it was only $5? They have a special menu on the weekends, so I also stopped by get some Bánh Bò Nướng (Vietnamese honeycomb green cake), Goi Cuong (summer rolls) and the Xôi Mặn (sticky rice with Viet ham and sausage). Everything was delicious and I walked out for about $20; which again, this would have been at least $10-$15 more in the DC area. If I lived here, I'd be at New Saigon Market several times a week. It's a true hidden local gem. Five well deserved stars!

The store sells produce, frozen food, and a variety of spices and rice. They were well stocked with many more boxes of merchandise in the back room that looked like they needed to be opened/ put away. I was most interested in the produce and the prices were reasonable. I was pleasantly surprised to see bok choy and gai lan but sadly, they weren't popular items as they were starting to wilt. That said, I would shop here again!
