A newer distillery, established around 2018-2019, Lux Row is a brand that seems to cater to a younger crowd. At around 90 acres compared to Maker's 1100 acres, the campus design boasts less of the old school wood aesthetic and is more steam punk. Lots of metal and exposed pipes. When we visited, production was shut down, which was maybe lucky for us. It's apparently very loud normally, plus we got to see all the inner workings of the machines. We had already seen mash being produced at Maker's, so we didn't feel like we were missing much. Dakota was our guide. At the beginning of the tour it felt very perfunctory and cookie cutter, but by the time we made it to the barrel houses and the tasting, she had really come into her own. In the barrel house, we got to do a "thieving," where we tasted bourbon right out of the barrel. At the tasting, we had five bourbons, escalating in price and rarity, paired with chocolates. Water and oyster crackers were provided as palate cleansers, along with a complimentary rocks glass. The last bourbon was the 200 dollar per bottle bourbon, but I liked the first and cheapest bourbon best, as did some others. Dakota was really passionate about the tasting and explaining to people how to taste and how to appreciate flavor profiles. She has several certifications related to bourbon and I think Lux Rox should consider her a talent and make sure she's being utilized as such.

One of the highlights was the delicious welcome cocktail they served at the beginning--it was a fun way to kick things off. Since we visited during the summer, the distillery wasn't actively producing bourbon, but our tour guide still did a great job explaining the process and sharing the history of the distillery. The gift shop was also worth checking out. They carry several different bourbon brands, including Penelope Bourbon, so there was a nice variety to browse instead of just a few labels. Overall, it was a well-run tour with friendly staff and a beautiful facility. I'd definitely recommend adding Lux Row to your Bourbon Trail itinerary.

Excellent place! I was excited to find their wine that I use in punch was available at this location. I don't have to go over the river and through the woods to Oliver Winery to get this, I can just go about a mile from my home. This is marvelous. Yes, Virginia there is a Santa Claus. No, B Rad, they don't sell mud. They do have a great selection of wines for where we're at. This isn't total wine, this isn't a big box store. Some dude and his family run this place and I've only ever seen the family running it (it is right by my gym) so previous problems that people have had with employees have cleared up because now it is straight up mom and pop. I can get behind a mom and pop all day and the part of the night I'm not sprawled on Karen's basement floor wondering why Anderson Cooper doesn't call me back. Why does this place get four stars instead of three? They had a huge selection (compared to the size of the store) of local wines and beer. I think that's wonderful. I haven't fallen in love with any of the local beers or near local beers BUT I know my friends have and now I know where to get some before going to their homes. I also know that supporting local businesses is good for everyone. If you want Bud Light you need to reexamine your life choices and also: go to Walmart. If it is Garbage de Blanc you're looking for they have it AND in the vintage you prefer. If you're a grown up and looking to drown your sorrows in quality then this is your jam. The most expensive whiskey I ever tasted was the Dalmore King Alexander III. A roughly $300 bottle,…read moreand a shot that cost at least $40. I was celebrating a promotion, don't judge! The second most expensive was the Mizunara whiskey from Boundary Oak, a $250 bottle. It's made with staves from a rare Japanese tree, that has to be at least 200 years old before it can be used. It truly imparts a one-of-a-kind flavor. This was included in the premium package, which lets you try some terrific and 'fancy' stuff for $30. You also get an etched glass to take home. Gerry was a great tasting guide! He was very knowledgeable about the products, and how they may be best enjoyed, including a whiskey that needed to sit for a bit to open up. I also want to give some extra credit, as when I asked about their "Sinful 69" bottle, he poured a little sample for me, and called over the other folks who were doing the tasting to try it also. Alas, I did not have an opportunity this time around to see the inner workings of distillation, but as I understand it, this is more an explanation that tour through the production area. With this, Boundary Oak Distillery was a great, memorable stop on my birthday trip to Kentucky.
