It's not about punishment, it's about building relationships while giving consequences. Five of my children have attended here. We are a multi-race family. They have encountered racist jokes, jabs and hate- which you will find at every school- however, if someone speaks up about it then it is dealt with immediately. Big money. Will our kids learn anything here? Hope so. Only time will tell. The teachers seem good. School faculty seems professional. The principal is a nice lady and appears fair and level headed. Safety is key here. Good. We need that. Problem here is the extreme insulation of teaching staff from parents. It's very hard to speak w your child's teacher in person unless you make an appt in the front office, which is much like trying to be a new patient at a doctor's office. "5 weeks from now we can get you in." Ugh. All is basically done via email or an app which can be arduous to communicate properly re issues when not face to face. There is no showing up at school for a quick hello w a teacher. Nope. They won't let you see your child's teacher real quick. They'll turn you away, and give you a slight snide vibe... like you might be a criminal or trying to do something dastardly. The attitude is unnecessary and unreasonably excessive. Another aside is that "side eye" that some "outdoor kid wranglers wearing safety vests" give if you dare ask a question, or "cross an imaginary line" that they deem uncrossable. So many rules to break by accident. A few, not all mind you, seem to deem some parents as a threat. I'm sure these ladies outside have seen their share of hard to deal withs, they're out there, but that percentage is low. Parents w their children aren't threats. (Hence the 3.65 out of 5 stars) What about that "Kindness Always" message again? Now... the ugliness that is the drop off and pick up situation at Hillcrest. Hoooo weee! DO NOT DO IT. Stressful! The school built in 1961 was never ready for the volume it has now in the 21st century, as well as the neighborhood that was built around it. Put your child on the bus! Seriously. Trying to park or getting in a line up of cars winding through a neighborhood an hour prior to drop or pickup is extreme. It can move along expeditiously at times, but mostly it's slow going and a daily fight. I wouldn't, nor would most, recommend it. You have to get there fairly early before school, and 45 mins before for pickup. Lots of sitting in your car waiting. People cut the line amd make it worse too. Getting away from the school is also tough. Put the kids on the bus! Nix the traffic jam and hanging around out front waiting for the teacher to walk out. This is an issue all experience. All in all Hillcrest is alright. B-. We can deal w the vests outside, the warden-esque front office, and the insane school traffic. Most agree it's the better school of the bunch in LS. Better than most. We work with what we have.

I can give a pretty unique review of this school as I was one of the original students that…read moreattended the school when it first opened in 1997. To say that my experience there was horrific would be putting it mildly. This school is based off of antiquated fundamentalist Christian ideals and the staff have no interest in teaching children about the true love of Christ. They focus so much attention on the legalities of Christianity, rather than focusing on Christ's grace and love for mankind. I was 11 years old when my parents decided to move me to this "school" and it was worst decision they could have ever made for me. I was placed in Laura Young's 5th grade class and she personally attacked and victimized me every chance she got, even though I was only a young child. I was shunned by other staff members, teachers and students alike simply because I liked girly things such as wearing lip gloss or nail polish. Teachers would tell students not to eat lunch with me because I was "too sinful" so I spent most of my time there alone. It was incredibly damaging to my self-esteem as a young child. As far as the education goes, sure, it was better than the average public school but a good education didn't make up for the horrific treatment that I experienced at the hands of the faculty and their offspring. Laura Young made our 5th grade class memorize the declaration of independence word for word. Let me tell you that as someone who now works at one of the largest corporations in the United States and makes well over six figures a year, memorizing the declaration of independence did absolutely nothing to aid me in my career (or in any part of my life for that matter). I have looked at the current faculty as of 2023 and I still see some of the same faces that I did when I was in attendance at this school. Those same teachers and administrators tormented me, all in the name of God. Word to the wise...if you value your child's wellbeing and spiritual health, stay very far away from this school. There are plenty of other Christian schools in the area that still offer a good education, without the extreme judgment and psychological abuse that your child will no doubt experience if enrolled in this utter pathetic excuse for a school.

I swam at the Kamiak High School pool as part of Shorewood High School Girl's Swim & Dive…read more(2006-2009). I loved coming to this school for swim meets because I loved the pool so much. The Kamiak Swim Team was formidable competition and I enjoyed getting all spirited up and coming here to race. The pool has built in bleachers (cement) that we could sit at if there weren't many spectators for a given meet. Locker rooms were easy to access and large with two bathroom stall areas. A small pool was available on the other side of the bulkhead of the competition lanes to warm-up and cool-down in. The pool deck was barely above the pool water level and had a grate to cycle overflow water. When there were a bunch of people in the pool for warm-up or the like the water level of the pool would get rather close to the pool deck or overflow meaning very shallow standing water near the pool's edge. I loved this pool deck height and design relative to pool water level. This is primarily because I had an asthma attack while swimming here and had to cross a lane line and pull myself out of the water before I lost all strength in my arms and legs. Not sure I would have had the same outcome if the pool had been designed like others to have several inches to a foot or more of vertical cement/pool deck to pull myself up and out over. There is zero glamor in not being able to finish a race. I am so grateful I had my asthma attack here, at a pool well designed so that I could get out of the water in time. I'd guess that's not what the pool designers had in mind for a low lying pool deck, but a definite perk for me swimming here: knowing that I could pull myself out of the water in time if I had an asthma attack while swimming. An all around beautiful and well designed pool. The rest of the campus that I saw the times I came to swim here were beautiful as well.
