Never seen this kinda restaurant in the entire Vienna city what a amazing service wow thank you so much

Anytime I get the opportunity to eat traditional, spicy food - I jump at the chance. I haven't had Ethiopian food in ages and have only ever eaten it at one restaurant. When I saw this place on Yelp, I knew I had to go. It's a bit out of the way, not exactly near the main downtown district or near other touristy areas. Perfect. Just be prepared to walk almost a mile once you get off the tram/bus/metro stop closest to the restaurant. It's worth it. It looks very unassuming from the outside, but when you step foot inside it exudes a homeyness you feel down to your bones. There are tables lining the walls on both the right and left side. A staircase runs up the middle of the room leading to a second story with more seating (and the bathroom is upstairs too!). I was met by who I assumed to be the owner. He told me to sit wherever I wanted so I plopped down kind of toward the back since I was alone. After ordering a beer on draft, I realized they accept cash only and I was totally out of cash. Thankfully the owner pointed me toward the nearest ATM and I sprinted there and returned, beer sitting patiently on the table for me to drink it. I ordered some kind of chicken dish that ended up having a moist, roasted chicken leg, a mashed sauce consisting of bell peppers, onions, ginger, and maybe chickpeas? and a side salad. It came out super fast, along with a side of injera bread. This bread is a flat, spongey bread. It's taste kind of reminds me of sourdough, but better. With Ethiopian cuisine, you eat with your hands, tearing off some injera to make a little cup to grab up all the delicious food. My stomach had been growling so I inhaled my feast in about 7.3 minutes and contentedly sat there drinking my beer until I felt like moving again. A good, solid Ethiopian joint. Injera: fabulous! Perfect texture and flavor. I like how they found a way to arrange it on the plate so that we had exactly the amount we needed. Berbere lentils: as good as ever. The other vegetarian dishes: good, but not the best I've ever had. The cabbage dish wasn't as cooked down and sweet and rich-tasting as I usually like, and the green beans were a bit unmemorable. I would have loved some greens as part of the veggie sampler, too. Honey wine: delicious, and less sweet than in most places. (For newcomers: it's probably better to think of it as a sweet mead than as wine. It tastes almost like kombucha. I personally love it but it's not for everyone.) Note that the stuff was, ahem, strong. The temperature in there was unpleasantly hot. Service was fast and friendly. read more

I've eaten at Ethiopian Restaurant twice now, and each time was a great dining experience. The people working there (the owners) are super friendly (and speak sufficient English), and they offer great recommendations for their dishes, particularly for those of you who aren't up for the usual spiciness of Ethiopian food. The last time I dined here, the waiter/owner came around to tell us there would be a traditional coffee ceremony downstairs, which we could observe and partake in (gratis). It was really nice to watch the lady roast fresh coffee beans, then serve the coffee (SO fresh) to each of us, as just an extra little treat. The smell, of course, was also amazing. (Regular readers know I'm a fanatic and connoisseur of sorts of coffee..) I can't vouch for the authenticity of this place, but it _seems_ pretty authentic or, at least, not "Austrian Ethiopian" or touristy-Ethiopian food. Therefore do be prepared to eat with your hands, and come away with smelly fingers (you can wash and wash, but it will still take a while to get rid of those delicious smells!) In that same vein, their restroom is very clean with plenty of soap and towels, which is something I highly value as I like to wash my hands after using public transportation, and particularly before eating, and _especially_ before eating with my hands! As for the cuisine... stellar. I like it quite a lot, and I imagine there's something there for every palate, so long as one is willing to be a little open minded. read more

Cleverly named, this restaurant brought me back to life. The food is immaculate, and the service is wonderful. The sharing platter was extremely generous. With each bite, we felt the love and care spent to create such a wonderful meal. I will be bribing the chef for their recipes. read more

I thought the perfect meal didn't exist. I can't believe this place doesn't have 5 stars. Some people just don't know a good home cooked savory meal. We got the plate for 2 classic injera and spreads. This took me back to family flavors and the ambiance is very comfortable. I can't describe the excitement that every bite brought and the owner of the restaurant himself is the sweetest human. This is an absolute gem of a place in Vienna and the best Ethiopian food I've had in a long time. read more

I love Ethiopian food so I took the subway out to this place. We split the meat special for two. It was absolutely delicious and the service was fast and nice. Price for two plus drinks was about 20 euros, not bad! It's totally worth the subway ride for anyone looking for something different. read more

We figured we would try Ethiopian while in Vienna and we were not sorry. The restaurant was warm and seating is comfortable. We ended up having the vegetarian platter, which consisted of five or six dishes. If you know Ethiopian food you know you eat with your hands. Unlike some other Ethiopian restaurants I have been to each person gets their own platter here. Prices were very reasonable and the staff speaks great English. Bottom line, this is worth a try. read more

We ate there and it was just great. We got the vegetarian and meat platter with that typical Ethiopian sourdough pancake. The meat was great juicy and tender. Service personal was super friendly, big ups for that! We got lucky because the owner did a traditional Ethiopian coffee celebration where she freshly roasted coffee beans. Oh and by the way the coffee was for free! I highly recommend this restaurant if you are into Ethiopian food! read more

We ate at Ethiopian Restaurant last night and enjoyed not only very friendly and kind service but also some great food! We ordered an assortment for 2 (meat and veggies) and one salad, and it was way too much food. Delicious! The "scharf" isn't very spicy, so go ahead and order whatever looks good on the menu without much worry. (My Austrian husband would say to preface that with, "I'm American...," as my toleration for "scharf" is much higher than his. So, take that warning, too!) Wow, we found a place with really good Ethiopian food! Great flavors and variety with an average priced menu. Good service with a nice waiter whom also spoke English. Nice and quiet location to downtown! read more

My girlfriend and I went there for dinner last Friday evening and had an amazing experience. We got there around 7:30 and were quickly greeted by very friendly staff/owners. We ordered the "plate for two people", which included a diverse selection of meats, veggies, cheese and injera (flat bread that is used as your scooping utensils). The food came out very quickly and tasted delicious. Good flavour and excellent spices. Not too spicy. We were invited to witness the "coffee ceremony", where a staff member roasts coffee beans in the restaurant. The beans are then used in coffee preparation and offered to us free of charge. Make sure you wash your hands before eating because in keeping with the tradition of Ethiopian food there are no utensils provided. We are going back soon. This will be a regular place for us. read more
