If you're looking for a unique home design fix, this is the place to be! I have looked for a new coffee table over past few weeks and I was glad to find some gorgeous samples at Fragile Design. As their collection includes an exclusive and stunning memorabilia, it's likely to be undecided about what to get. The pottery decorative pieces are amazing and this is just a snapshot of what you can expect from this shop. There are pieces and prices affordable for all kinds of pockets and honestly, for an outstanding vintage shop like this; I didn't find it expensive at all. Fragile Design is placed at Custard Factory, inside the Zellig building, and it's open from Tuesdays to Saturdays (from 10am to 5.30pm) and Sundays, Mondays and Tuesday by making an appointment in advance.

However, I'm glad I made it inside this wonderful oasis of 20th century furniture! It looks like the house I grew up in with furniture of browns, greens and oranges and yet the furniture looks new. Most items have been refurbished to look like new but still distinctly retro. I was after a very large but unique lampshade and what they actually sell are new ones (albeit made with vintage materials) I thought it was odd that the gentleman didn't take my details to sell me one but instead gave me a flyer of the designer in London that makes them. Fragile Design do offer 'looking for something' form on their website so the store is fantastic if you have something very particular in mind, as I tend to when it comes to furnishings.

An almost palace of cheap and cheerful shopping they stock pretty much everything from home ware, clothes, furniture, garden products, electrical, lights, toys and even sweets and food. Spread over 3 floors once inside you might struggle to escape. I visit quite often as they have a lot of cheap things I use around festival season and Christmas. Even though it's cheap it's not all throwaway stuff, I bought some glasses there when I moved to my new apartment and the quality is pretty decent. As well as all the practical things you will need you can also find some very surreal and kitch decorative things. There are three floors dedicated to kitchenware, furniture, bedding, lighting and electrical goods, gardening equipment, tools, food and drink, cleaning products... see, everything! I recommend going by car or with a willingness to carry bags. And expect to leave there with a bunch of useless things you never intended to buy on your shopping trip (I still have the lenticular portrait of a tiger on my wall to this day).

The Custard Factory is so named as it used to be wait for it.. a custard factory! Home of the…read morefamous Birds' Custard. It holds some great memories for me and many of my fellow Brummies. It's now a large complex made up of hundreds of offices and studios, shops, bars, cafes and a theatre. Work I currently work here and most businesses who are based here are of the creative variety and there's a real inspirational and motivational feeling when you walk around and see so many other creatives here. The offices are spacious and light, I've never been one for working in offices but I make an exception for Custard Factory. Shop Some of the more notable places here you should check out include Urban Village (vintage clothing), Ideal Skate Shop & ramp and Yumm (cafe). But there are lots more, you really need to go down and have a good mooch. Being a bit off the beaten track (a whopping ten minute walk from town - are we really that lazy?!), it's often not as busy as it should be considering there are literally NO other cool independent shopping areas in or around Birmingham City Centre. I'd strongly advise coming down to see for yourself if you haven't already. Play Over the years I've seen countless number of amazing bands and DJs perform in various sections of this large complex, acts such as Lee Scratch Perry, LCD Soundsystem, Klaxons, Roots Manuva, 2manydjs, Erol Alkan and many more. At one time it was the best venue in town with an international reputation for being an awesome club and gig venue. The main venue 'The Medicine Bar' has since closed it's main room and the side bar is now home to 'Bar 78', which is a nice place for a lunchtime drinks and snack but a far cry from the hedonistic days of my youth. Now you can occasionally go to a club night at Gibb Street Warehouse (formerly Space 2) but the old glory days are greatly missed! Digbeth should be like the Camden or Shoreditch of Birmingham, we've got a good foundation here - help it grow by becoming a regular shopper or by basing your business or studio here. I had a super king-sized leather bed with silentnight mattress and it's the best bed in the world, you'll have to take my word for it as my girlfriend reads these reviews!!!
