Found this place through Groupon's $35 Corrective Facial deal. Their regular price is $45 and they have a stamp card where after 5 facials you get one free (which they didn't give me the first time I went, mind you). Price wise, it's unbeatable in this area. As far as what the price gets you...well a student edition that's slower and therefore abridged. There's a lot they simply don't have time for as the student tries to rush through everything in about 45minutes. The first time takes longer as there's a review of your intake forms, and a discussion on what products to use during this facial. After cleansing, an instructor comes in to check your skin and advise the student on what to do and what products to use. I found this process useful for determining what products I should and should not use. I came back and scheduled with the same student just to get an idea of how much my skin might've improved after following the instructors advice. Very useful. They student double cleanses while streaming your skin. There's always makeup removal even though I've tried telling them I have permanent makeup and no additional makeup on. I really wished they would add this to their chart so we can just skip all this "makeup removal" when no makeup is worn. Anyway, after double cleansing there's an inspection, in my case exfoliation, a mask, and then some treatment as necessary. I assume not everyone has the same treatment as we have different issues to address. Overall the rooms and tables are comfortable. They play pleasant music. It's meant to be a relaxing spa experience. However, as they don't have any lymphatic massage included, or bring any of the facial down to your neck/chest, it really feels a little j complete. I'm so happy I discovered esthetic Institute through groupon. Now I've been here over 8 times and I've been working with one particular student for a few months now. Her level of knowledge with problem/acne skin has impressed me. As someone who has tried almost everything in the industry and visited countless dermatologists for years to treat my face, I've never been treated with such great attention to my skin and such a personalized action plan. She has been working to lighten my hyperpigmentation and I already see great improvement. I've done regular facials, chemical peels, and microdermabrasion. Now that my hyperpigmentation has been improving, I hopped over to their location next door (the Esthetic Laser Clinic, not to be confused with Esthetic Institute-where the students are) and got microneedling (Skinpen) done. I am excited to see the results. The Esthetic Laser clinic is the real deal and it is not done by students. Pricing for the Esthetic Institute is wonderful, especially for this area where everything seems to be on the higher end. There are other schools out there, stay away from this one!!!!!! The tuition is about $11,000 and of that $2,500 is for materials. They make it seem like they give you so much supply when you are doing the orientation (They said don't worry about the supplies we will give you as much as you need to get all the practice you need- then once you actually start the course and paid them their money they'll tell you: this is the supplies you get, if you run out we will be happy to sell you some!) huh? Also- the supplies are really cheap and not worth the 2.5k at all! Also- I paid for my machines and supplies and I had to drop out of the course early due to personal matters so when I emailed them saying that I wanted to pick up the machines I had already paid for they said no! They wouldn't release my supplies that I OWN! They said something about me giving them $450 first because I want to drop out early.. even though I have already paid them for the semester! I have a been a student here for three different courses to include: basic esthetic, laser class, and master esthetic class. I had enjoyed my time while being a student since I learned a great deal of skincare knowledge. One of the great benefit of the school is you get to practice on each other. My skin has never felt or looked so amazing. We have a chance to work in the student clinic towards the later half of the problem. I would recommend anyone coming to the clinic as a paying customer to keep a few things in mind. It is a training environment. You may have to share a room with another customer (there is privacy with curtains). A student is there to learn and feedback is encouraged. It's true that a student is going to be servicing you, but in my experience, it's not too worrisome, because there's a teacher and other students in the room. Also, you can say which services you want, so you can start out with something harmless, and work your way up as the student demonstrates himself capable. So yes, maybe my student did forget how many times to run the microdermabrasion on my back, but all he had to do was turn to the person on his right and ask. The services are quite plentiful too - in one evening, I got a vitamin C peel on my face, fluid releasing facial massage, and microdermabrasion on my back. I've been coming here for about 2 years now. This is a great place to treat yourself without spending a lot of money. They offer waxing, facials, but what I love them for is eyebrow tinting! For whatever reason, I've had trouble finding places that offer that service. And here it's only $10! You can't beat it. They do lash tinting too, which is great especially if you are going to the beach or something and would prefer to avoid that runny raccoon look I went there yesterday and saw Paula, and I must say she does an amazing job!! She told me she's a perfectionist and I was like, ok! I want perfect eyebrows!! The only reason I hesitate to give 5 stars is that because it is a student clinic, the service you get can be variable. I've been to other institute for facial. This place probably put in the least amount of effort. They say there's professional supervision... I didn't see one professional. Going into the facial I had on light foundation and some mascara. I am aware this is a teaching spa/school, and allowed for such when appraising my experience. I was fortunate to have a student who will be a great Master Esthetician one day. A lactic acid peel was my treatment ,by a Master's student on Tuesday March 18, 2013. My Esthetician was wonderful. This was her second or third peel, and she only needed to check her notes once! She was knowledgeable about the process and products being used. Always attentive to my comfort level and queried me often to confirm my level of "activity". This is a great place to go for facials and peels. I've been going for several years and have never had a bad experience. The school keeps your records on file and the esthetician reviews it and you skin before making a recommendation for type of peel to use for that visit. And you can't beat the price. I try to go every six weeks because it's so affordable. Before I found the school I would spend $150+ and now pay @&40 for the same service at EI. It is a school, so you may be doubled up in a room with a cloth separator but that has never bothered me. Everyone is very friendly and helpful. I called and asked could my return be processed at which point the owner tried to give me the run around. She was rude, condescending, and unprofessional! She yelled and tried to belittle me she even attempted to hang up on me which didn't work because she placed me on hold. Waste of time and money!! I purchased 2 corrective facials, and they did nothing at all for my skin. Although I had had stronger peels in the past, the students insisted on starting with a very basic and mild peel. The next time I went, we moved up to the next level which was also very mild and did nothing for my skin. Although the girls are pleasant, they are extremely inexperienced. They have no professional skills for talking with clients. They cannot keep appointments straight. You're lucky if your appointment is still in the books when you go in! I saw only the student, so I do not think there is any professional supervision. These amateurs can really make a mess of your face!!! read more

This place is beyond unprofessional! I was ready to start a new path and decided to start a career in Esthetics, I went in for a tour and Mrs. Kathy was nice and made the process sound so easy. I had to call back and make an appointment with the enrolment lady (forgot her name) she gave me a run around for almost four weeks. By the time I finally met with her, she told me I was 30 minutes late because she was running late. Finally when we sat down to discus the enrollment part I had few questions and she she got irritated with my questions was very rude and refused to help me after a while. I told her to her face I was done with the school tried to call and speak to the director I wasn't able to get a hold of her. If I could give zero stars, I would. To start, I gave this place a fair chance. I had an awful experience the first time I went but hoped that it wasn't actually a reflection of the place as a whole. Turns out, the place is just awful. Let me preface. I understand that this is a school and was not expecting something similar to a Four Seasons spa experience, but I was excited to find a school where you could get discounted services. The price was right and I believed that the services would be good based on the students' passion and desire to learn and grow. I was wrong. My first experience: a friend and I each booked a microderm facial. The technician that my friend had did not know how to do the microderm at all, therefore, my technician had to help her (several times, which interrupted my facial). Also, the technician that was doing my friend's facial "forgot" to actually include the facial part of the facial with the microderm treatment. Therefore, my friend's facial was much, much shorter than mine and we couldn't figure out why until we went to pay. My friend had to argue with the owner for awhile to not have to pay full price. She was then given a rather pathetic discount. Meanwhile, my lady seemed to know what she was doing, however, her hands reeked of cigarettes. It was nasty! I felt like she was rubbing nicotine all over my face. Not to mention the fact that she had to help her classmates along during the facials, so I was left alone on several different occasions and she was so "busy" and "confused" that she actually put the chemical peel on my face twice! Ouch! Horrible! My second experience: I made an appointment for a facial. I sat in the waiting area for over an hour because they had "double-booked" but would not admit to the double booking. The owner walked by me several times with no apology and without offering me any water or, well anything actually. I got fed up and ended up walking out. The place is poorly run and the students are not qualified at all. NO discount is worth such a crappy experience. Lesson learned (twice). read more

Up front you should know that you are getting the great discount price because the people there are training. They have a certified teacher overseeing everything so there is nothing to worry about. They literally do everything by the book and what should be done at every facial spa. You are brought to your spa bed where you change into your robe. They will clean your face and inspect your skin. They will discuss your cleaning regimen with you and make recommendations on the type of items to be used and the type of treatment for your skin type. The instructor will be there for the recommendations and confirm what should be done. Then they work through each and every step of a classic facial. They have instructed their students on tone of voice, how to apply things with a soft touch, putting up hair and being personable. You couldn't ask for better trained students. I had Kailey Cronin and she was just wonderful. Her voice and mannerisms were calming. The scalp massage was one of the better ones I have had and her cleaning and exfoliating was just the right combination of refreshing and relaxing. The spa spots are sectioned off with white lines. The music is the standard new age and the lighting is just dimmed enough to be comfortable. The only downside is that it is a clinic so your spa area may be right next to another one. This is probably unbelievable, my friend recommended me this school, I talked to Katie on the phone she said what they need for registration so I did my diploma evaluated through the company they accept it. Every time I called to register they said different things, one person who pick up the phone says the class is not full, then I talked to second person at the same time she says only part time is available then she made an appointment for me I went there just next day Which she promised that I should be the first one to register and the class won't get full by then, the third person who said she is the manger said the sorry the class has been fulled since last week and I cant do anything for you. The worst staff with no managements at all, everybody has a different list for registration and who ever I talked to said she is a manger. One of my clients is taking classes there. She invited me to come in and she would wax anything I needed. I figured she need practice so I went in plus we have a blast together. She did a GREAT job. She waxed my under arms, eyebrows and legs. She is done with her waxing class now. She has invited me to come back so she can do a facial for me. I can tell she is one of their more competent students so I will go back and enjoy. Since she is a student there they allow her 3 "friends" on a list so I get it all FREE however I tip her very well for her time, attention to detail and supplies. I went here for a facial. I know it is a school and my esthetician would be a student so I was not expecting the best facial of my life or anything. The check-in area was very nice, must nicer than I expected...just like a real spa. I wish I could remember the name of the young lady who did my facial but I can't. She was very sweet but smelled like smoke. She did a good job, cleansed my skin, explained everything she was doing. The teacher came in a few times and was very rude to the student in the way she spoke to her. I fell asleep (in a good way) during my facial with Candice. I actually ran into Candice recently and recognized her as someone who did my facial at Aveda a while back. She has a great attitude and really loves what she does and mentioned that she now works at the Esthetic Institute. I booked a chem peel and microdermabrasion with her given my great experience with her. Except for not being able to find the place for a ludicrously long time (THANKS Google Maps), my experience was perfect. Even though I was crazy late, they were incredibly accommodating and kind. No frills, sure enough. But I don't care about frills, I just want great, effective service. I got an enzymatic peel that definitely felt like it was working, but with no pain or discomfort. Same with the microdermabrasion (which is when I fell asleep!). Despite my being totally relaxed, I woke up and my skin did look glowy, smooth, and fresh--it just happened that I got those effects without having my skin scoured and scraped. :) I think if you manage your expectations and balance it against what you're getting (no frills, but very good, very effective discounted facial services) this place is great. My experience at the Esthetic Institute was excellent. I've been attending for over a year now receiving all kinds of treatments (facials, back facials, chemical peels, microdermabrasion, waxing, brown& lash tinting, etc). They are students giving you treatments, but they're well-taught and knowledgeable. The instructors are either in the room with models or outside the treatment room (for a real spa ambiance) just in case the students have any questions. I've never had a problem with one of my treatments. The results are great, they offer high quality treatments at reduced prices (because they're students), and retail a product line I've fallen in love with. The courses they offer are taught by proficient, experienced instructors that are excited to be teaching. I had an amazing experience at the student clinic here- The front desk staff greeted me kindly and asked me to fill out a form, I waited- then I went into a room where there was another client- it wasn't as exposed as the other student clinic I've been to. Michelle was the master esthetician who really examined my skin and made a decision based on my skin type, sensitivity, etc. She was super knowledgable and customized the facial to my needs. She was super thorough. She extracted my whiteheads then used the led light to help and also told me the advantages, she suggested skin care they sold there to help maintain and heal my skin. I didn't know this place existed but I will def be back :) the prices are definitely within my budget- this allows me to still pamper myself without hurting my pockets. First of all, they neglected to give me full information on total costs and results, such as how lip tattoo will take up to 5-6 sessions to see noticeable results and you have to pay the listed price for each session, so the listed price of $50 dollars over 6 sessions is $300. Then, even if makeup is done correctly by a professional on the eyebrows you will need a second session for perfect results, which is usually complementary in most places, but not this school, you will be charge for touch up again. Now about my experience: I had been given an eyebrow tattoo by a student with poor anesthetics ( the teacher said in the real world you wait 20 minutes for Anesthetics to start working, but we "don't have time for that", needless to say it was painful experience ) with a faulty tattoo "gun", that leaked and squirted ink all over my face and clothes, which aggravated my sensitive skin tremendously. I wish there was more close supervision because after almost 4 painful hours I ended up with two differently shaped and shaded black and grey eyebrows. Since I have very light bleached blond hair and specifically requested a light blond color for my eyebrows, I now look like a cartoon character with mis-colored dark eyebrows. They canceled my second appointment without calling me. The teacher told me that I should not have expected correct color mixing by students (why didn't she correct them on the spot?) and she can correct it for me for the full price that she charges, $350, or I can go see somebody else if I don't have confidence in their school and she "understands"! That offer makes me wonder if this "school" is just a way to get new clients for the full price. Also I had my lips done at the same time as my eyebrows and I have no retaining color : waist of money. I will now have to go through very costly and risky procedures of tattoo removal on my eyebrows, that can leave me with scars and no hair on my eyebrows. read more

i had a pretty good experience as a student at the esthetic institute. the facility was clean, the kit for the nail tech program was excellent (a fully loaded OPI kit), and the vibe was very professional overall. some notes: -state testing & licensing fees are NOT included in the tuition. this was a bad surprise at the end, since the program was expensive and once i was done paying it off, i was hit with more fees. every school does things their own way. certain institutes (such as aveda for example) include those fees in the tuition. just make sure you do all the math beforehand. -for the nail program, we did not get many student clinic clients to practice on. yes, i learned a lot and i passed my state boards with nearly 100% scores. but my first salon interview and manicure demo made me realise how little i was prepared for actual salon work. practicing on real live people is VERY important, and i wish they'd find a way to make that happen more for the nail course. even if it means asking students from other programs to come in and get free manicures so we can get more experience that way. -gel nails are the future of the nail industry, in my opinion. it's already everywhere, and it's something that is frequently requested in every nail salon in this area. we spent ONE day learning about gels. lucky for me, i was already self-taught and well equipped in my home studio to work on gels. the school has a few UV lamps, but during my time there they had ZERO gel polishes with which to practice. my classmates basically didn't do/learn/practice a single gel manicure throughout the whole program. sure, the general process of doing a gel manicure is not too far off from a regular manicure... but there are important things to learn about proper nail prep and gel application techniques to ensure that the manicure lasts as long as it's supposed to. i suppose they dont teach these things because the state board doesn't require it, but in order to be successful in today's industry, learning to use gel is a must. -the textbook & tests. there were a lot of discrepancies between what the textbook taught us, what the test questions (& supposed correct answers) said, and the teacher also misgraded things quite often. this drove me absolutely crazy, as i knew points were being taken off my scores for things that i knew were correct but were misgraded or mis-typed on the tests. this is a big problem, which i mentioned to the school administration. despite all that, though, i did learn a lot and i liked my classmates and teacher. compared to other students i saw in my testing group for state board practicals, i felt WAY more organized both in my methodology and the way my kit was packed. i recommend checking out the esthetic institute when considering options for completing a nail tech course. just keep the other things i mentioned in mind. read more

I hesitate to write this since I am still shocked with my experience at this school, but I would like to share my experience so others can learn from my mistake. I went to this school looking for a massage therapy program. I chose this school from the advertisement on the web, and hoped that it would be different from my experience at Ana Visage Institute in Great Falls, VA or AVI as it is now known. (AVI was a nightmare to deal with from the lack of instructors and sanitation, all the way down to the inconsistent administration.) Anyhow, I visited EI and spoke with Ms. Parvane who I understand is co-owner of the school. When I went to see her, she stated that evening classes were not available for massage therapy but she would be in touch if the heavens aligned and enough people signed up. Well, a week later I get a call -seems like the heavens aligned-and suddenly there were enough people for an April 11th class to start. I went to see her that same weekend to find out more since no details were given over the phone. Classes were going to be in the evening from 6-10pm and on Sundays after 1pm-but no clear schedule had yet been set. After sitting down with her that Saturday and signing up to ensure I got a spot in class-I made the stupid mistake of signing up, and putting a 1500.00 deposit--all without reading the fine print. After leaving the office that same day-I received word from my work that I would be leaving the area for work related reasons (US Army). That same evening I shot an email to EI and let them know that I would not be able to attend class for work reasons and that I would be by to return the 2 books Ms. Parvane provided. When I went back on Monday to promptly return the items and get a refund of my deposit-Ms. Parvane made it a point that I go to the back with her and some other receptionist. After much hesitation she pulled me to the back and stated that there was a $100.00 non-refundable fee for signing up. Please don't misunderstand me--it was not the non-refundable fee that upset me, but the fact that on Saturday she stated that that very fee would not be applicable-b/c I was paying for supplies. I clearly asked her about any refunds in case I could not attend and she clearly stated that there was no issue in receiving a full refund. I made sure to ask about refunds because of my nightmare experience at Ana Visage or AVI. Bottom line: BUYER BEWARE..this exchange only cost me $100.00 but from what I read in other reviews..those who go through the program are left to their own devices. I thought I had learned my costly lesson from Ana Visage or AVI-since I got my esthetician's license I have had to attend other seminars to learn what I should have learned there. I have had to come out of pocket for training and education that I should have received when compared to other programs. But I'm sure the same scenario would have applied here-atleast from the short exchange with Ms. Parvane. I know it's difficult to find Esthetics and/or massage therapy programs in Northern Virginia, but make sure you talk to present and prior students before signing up at any school be it (either Ana Visage Training Institute or whatever they are calling themselves now or Esthetics-Institute.) If you don't have solid recommendations, you are wasting your time and money. And in this economy-those are precious commodities. When I decided to do my licensing I researched several institutes and once I went in for the interview, I was immediately impressed. The school is very nice and well supplied with the latest and best machines, resources and products for the students to learn. The instructors here are not only knowledgable and professional, they are also very hands on and very much engaged with you and seeing you meet your academic goals. I was so impressed that after finishing my Basic program that I was excited to sign up and complete their Masters Program as well. I also made some fantastic client based relationships. I'm happy with the facials that I've been getting here for years. They are just a bit unorganized, can never find my file. The only huge disappointment was the permanent makeup on my brows. I would never let them near me with a needle again! 5 years ago it was already a disaster and so was the touch-up just recently. Back then I had to have it corrected by a professional, paid 800$ for both the brows and the eyeliner. Now I thought it is time for a touch up because the brows started to fade. So I gave them another chance. Instead of just doing a touch up they changed the shape entirely and made them way too dark. The Persian drama really looks hideous! This all happened with the "Master" right there overseeing it. I wonder how she got her degree! Now I am going through laser removal and in a few months eventually will be able to get new brows from a "real" professional permanent makeup artist. read more

It's the end of a horribly long cold winter and my face has definitely taken it on the chin. My skin was dry and the pores were clogged from trying to find something to put on it to keep it from chapping. I was looking for something "immediate" and saw that the Esthetic Institute was running a special on Amazon local. I called them up and was able to get their last "same day" appointment. I had the signature facial peel and I am very happy with the results. I have very sensitive skin and other than a little burning sensation I was fine. No redness. Just very clean skin that feels as smooth as can be. The facility is clean, bright and the people are very friendly. The esthetician was very knowledgeable and professional. (I paid the full price of $30.00 and I am planning to become a regular monthly customer.) The Institute is in an office building and depending on the time of day you might have to ring the buzzer to be let in. The waiting area is a little cramped, I guess because of the Amazon promotion, and, the ladies room serviced by the building management out in the elevator lobby was out of toilet paper, but other than those two things I have no complaints and so I am giving them "5 Stars". read more

I purchased a LivingSocial voucher for a corrective facial and scheduled over the phone for an appointment with one of their students. They had several appointment times available within a reasonable amount of time. Upon arriving the front desk staff had me fill out some paperwork and then notified my esthetician once I was ready. I was taken back to the treatment room by Kelcie, my esthetician where she provided me with a wrap towel and a place to put my things. During the treatment she explained everything she was doing and what the products were that she was using and how they would benefit my skin. She made it a point to review my paperwork and to ask me about my concerns for my skin and even looked up the ingredients on one of the products to make sure I wouldn't have an allergic reaction to it since I do have sensitivities. After the facial was over I was greeted with a cup of water and some suggestions of products, but was not pushed to purchase anything as I was leaving, which I love. Prices are unbeatable and their customer service was great, I am highly impressed! read more
