In the summer, the terrace facing the cathedral is sunny and calm. During cooler days, the small interior is cozy thanks to dark wooden benches and small tables. The 137 restaurant inside the hippodrome is quite a unique experience. Once up the elevator and…read moredown the corridor, a beautiful view of the race track appears. The location is decorated in minimalist gray with specks of lime green accents in candles and other elements. The menu is incredibly reasonable with options for nearly everyone. They place crackers and olives on the table while you wait. Later, they include slices of baquette. We had a formula /special menu. I was worth every bite. The crevettes were crunchy and fried on the outside, soft and melting on the inside. The other appetizer was the salmon platter; also great, creamy and generous. I chose the pave de boef and it was on point with a side of Maroille cheese sauce. Served with fites and salad was more than enough for a hungry date. Still the star of the night was the Dorado fish. It came with steamed potatoes and two delicate spring rolls filled with sautéed vegetables. The cream sauce on the fish filets itself was heavenly mixed with lemon butter. Very delicate, very delicious and very fresh. We finished our meal with three scoops of local flavored ice cream in Speculoos, Chicoree butter salt caramel as well as a café gourmand. It brought a small sample of deserts like a scoop of lime sorbet, a strawberry tiramisu, a chocolate mousse and a small cake as well as the espresso. I highly recommend anyone to check it out.

Outstanding fondue and raclette! Great treat if you are in Lille...a must visit…read more East walk (about 15 minutes) from the city center. Staff are exceedingly friendly and speak English. They were very accommodating to our three young children and helped us decipher the menu. We ordered cocktails (excellent), some great bordeaux wine (tasty), appetizers (all very good) and two kinds of fondue (more than enough food for the five of us). Everything we had was great. The place was packed (clearly very popular), the staff were helpful and professional, and the food was tasty (and fun). Worth a visit. Great 4-star restaurant. Strongly recommend!

When I first saw this place my initial assesment was "like a classic American restaurant - if it…read morewere French." It turns out I was pretty close; the plates are HUUGE and the food is pretty average. The produce is good for the simple salads - as is the, but those are *very* simple. For starters I had a "Croque Ancienne" (with salad) which was decent, but which I couldn't differentiate from an above average cheese toast and I couldn't determine what was "ancienne" about it - though that might be my own failing. My mother had a salad with a goat cheese and lardons which she seemed to like - the chevre itself was exceptional - but which was quite large for a starter. My entree (or main) was a Turkey filet in a Calvado cream sauce topped with camembert. The turkey was overcooked and dry; the sauce was *extremely* rich and the Calvado was lost in the sauce. My mothers main was also turkey (better) cooked in a (different) cream sauce - which was the same size as her starter and *also* came with a salad. My starter and entree *also* both came with salads, which didn't bother me as I had ordered them separately, but my mother had ordered hers as part of a *full menu*. Overall the food was decent, but the portions were over-large for the starters particularly and the food was quite rich. It was basically simple comfort food done with exceptional products. I should add that I tried two different blonde beers and they were both quite good.

We ordered the Carbonnade Flamandee, the Grilled Entrecôte, a small salad. Both entrees came with potatoes. Loved this Estaminet. It was full of locals having a wonderful time. So we did as well. The food came out and it was great looking. The carbonnade was outstanding. The flavors just really went well with the potatoes. And I can say it was very filling. The grilled entrecôte was a bit fatty but no problem. I enjoy a bit of it now and then. Again the potatoes were a great addition to the meat. Salad was a salad for me...just filler. Highly recommend. We had reservations(we think) but were early so even if we didn't have them there was no problem. About 15 minutes after we arrived the place was full. Great staff and fun place to eat.

It's tricky to find a proper, authentic restaurant anywhere around the Grande Place of Lille. The…read moregeneral rule of thumb is to stay away from any of the main street/square restaurants that advertise regional specialties with tacky sign boards. Le Barbue d'Anvers, although situated very close to the Grande Place, is not one of those terrible tourist traps. It's hidden down a cobblestone alley and doesn't do much for advertising. I know people who have lived in this neighborhood for three, four years and have never even noticed it. We took some friends visiting from London here for lunch and were immediately blown away by the vintage hotel lodge-like interior. By far the most handsome restaurant in town, but how about the food. I took the server's recommendation for a beer (wish I had remembered what it was called, because it was strong and good) which I drank with some foie gras and a smoked salmon starter. Both elegantly prepared and perfectly delicious. For my main course I had a high quality rack of lamb which left me just a little hungry. At the moment, this is my #1 for Lille, though I'll be dining at L'assiette Marché on Saturday so we'll see.
