Girona's railway station serves both the city and the surrounding region, and is the principal stop on the main line north from Barcelona to the French border.
The station is situated on a viaduct to the west of the river and the old town, and has recently been completely rebuilt, with all the main facilities at ground level. It is now spacious, bright and airy, with a small number of shops, a reservation and ticket office and a few cafeterias. It is adjacent to the city's main long-distance bus station, too. Local buses and taxis run into the city centre, which is otherwise a ten to fifteen minute walk (and about 20 minutes to the old town).
The station itself consists of just two island platforms, ample for the roughly hourly service - augmented at peak times - of Media Distancia trains to Barcelona, taking between one hour 20 minutes (Catalunya Expres)and one hour 40 minutes (Regional). A handful of long-distance international trains to and from France also stop here, some of which travel further into Spain. Otherwise, everything terminates at Barcelona Sants.
The new high speed AVE line to the French border is currently being built next door, which will incorporate both the new AVE train station and a rebuilt bus station, and will be the only stop between Barcelona and France. read more
