Let me preface this by the fact we live in the Austin area. Toby is our amazingly sweet border…read morecollie. TD (Toby's dad) has a ranch in Coy City that he goes to several times a month. On the morning of March 9th, 2018, Toby's dad (TD) was at his place in Coy City, off of one of the small county roads. Toby was "checking our fence line" :-) and just out of TD's sight, when TD heard a "yelp" (pardon the pun, lol). When TD got to him, Toby was bleeding quite a bit and unable to walk. TD could not tell what happened, so much fur and so much blood. TD scooped him up and raced towards Karnes City. Leaving Toby in the truck, TD walked into this vet's office. There was one couple in the waiting room with a dog, and no one at the desk. Shortly after walking in, a woman came up to the desk, asking TD if she could help him. TD explained to the woman that he "had a dog in the truck who was bleeding profusely and had been for about 20 minutes." He further explained he was not sure what happened, it was "maybe a snake bite or barbed wire cut"...he just was not sure since he did not see it happen. TD was told "we don't have any openings right now." I will let that sink in. "We don't have any openings right now." Dumbfounded, TD asked if there were any other vets nearby. She told them there was a place in Runge and asked him if he knew where that was. He said yes and turned to leave. As he was leaving, she called him back and gave him a paper with the Runge clinic number written down on it. The Runge clinic also turned TD away when he called, stating they also did not have any openings. At this point, TD decided to hight tail it back home to our AMAZING vet. He kept Toby next to him, applying pressure to where he could tell the blood was coming from. I am happy to say Toby survived, but barely. By the time he got to our amazing vet, he was in major shock. It turns out some no-excuse-for-a-human shot him with a very high powered pellet gun. We were lucky it missed his heart/lungs. After we knew Toby was going to pull through, I called the clinic and asked to speak to the vet on staff or the office manager. The person that answered said she was the latter. I questioned why she would turn away a man with a "profusely bleeding dog." She stated they were booked up and the vet was not even in the building at the time. I asked her if there was a vet tech there at the time TD asked for help...one who could have triaged Toby. She stated that there was, but the vet tech was "with an appointment." I will admit my anger is fueled by my baby being hurt and almost dying, and mostly directed at the scum who SHOT him, but COME ON! Someone walks into your veterinary clinic and states that he has a dog that is bleeding a lot out in the truck and you TURN HIM AWAY? I understand appointments, but I also understand commitment to the oath that a vet takes which states in part: "I solemnly swear to use my scientific knowledge and skills for the benefit of society through the protection of animal health and welfare, the prevention and relief of animal suffering." They turned him away. They turned this sweet man (who was also in shock and not thinking clearly) away with nothing more than a piece of paper with another vet's number. MAYBE, just maybe if the vet had been there, it would have been a different story. But you know what...the care, compassion and love for animals that vets have? That should transfer to their staff. There was no, "Hold on, let me see if someone can go out and triage." There was no "Bring him in and we will get him in on an emergency basis." There was no, "The vet is not here but we have a vet tech that can look at him." There was no "Here, let me give you some gauze to help control the bleeding until you can get to Runge." There was no, "Here, let me call the Runge office and let them know you are coming." There was nothing outside of "We don't have any openings right now." I was, and still am, in total and complete shock. It hurts my heart on so many levels. What DOES it do?? Makes me realize just how amazing our vet is. I hope this vet's office learns from this in case it can help another fur baby in the future.
