Tealicious Tearoom

Stopping in Durham on our way home from Newcastle wasn't originally planned, but we're so glad we…read moredid. Not only is a it a beautiful and historic place to visit, but we had the good fortune to come upon Tealicious Tea Room, on Elvet Bridge. Already busy as we entered even though it was within the last hour of opening that day, we were lucky enough to find a table, so we sat down and had a read of the menu. The decor is simple and classic, the perfect understated tea room. We read the menu and a friendly smiling staff member came over to take our order. We chose to go for a high tea for two, but were told that as it was near the end of the day, all of the scones had sold out (I'm not surprised), but instead offered us a toasted teacake, which was just as good if you ask me. For our tea I chose vanilla Earl Grey, and my partner chose the house blend. The tea was brought first, and as expected, was of a superb quality, and very enjoyable indeed. Our high tea came not long after, and we were surprised, as we this high tea was presented on a traditional cake stand, more akin to a traditional Afternoon Tea. We most certainly did not complain! The bottom tier started us with our sandwich choices, we chose roast ham on brown, and regional cheese and chutney, also on brown. These came with side sauces of a very tasty mustard mayonnaise, and the chutney mentioned, as well as some crisps. The centre tier was taken up by two giant slabs of cake! Real big boy sizes! My partner chose a mixed berry cake, and although I was greatly tempted by a salted caramel cake, I opted for a lemon Victoria sponge. The sandwiches were very enjoyable, and the cakes were absolutely delicious! Wonderfully moist and flavourful, but never becoming sickly or too much. The top tier for now simply had jam and cream on it, as our friendly member of staff told us just to give her a nod when we were ready for our toasted teacake, so we could still have it warm. I didn't get a photo of it, but it was huge, and wonderfully light and tasty. We really enjoyed this impromptu little visit to Tealicious, and we appreciate that although they were busy and it was nearing closing, we never felt rushed or that we were a bother. The staff were friendly, polite, and helpful, and made us feel welcome. Whenever we next venture to Durham, we will definitely be returning to Tealicious!

Delicious sandwiches, sausage rolls, sweet and savory scones and a variety of amazing sweets. Make a reservation and go, you won't be disappointed.

We stayed in a town with no Starbucks prior to coming to Durham so I cannot even explain my joy and…read moresatisfaction with this place. With my Starbucks gold card, I was able to get the pumpkin spice latte a week earlier than everyone & let me just tell you -- WOW. It was SO good that my taste buds quite literally cried tears of joy. I have never been more pleased nor jubilant in my 21 years of existence. The barista making my drink was not only kind and professional (she didn't laugh at me trying to count my coins which I still can't understand), but she also made the best pumpkin spice latte to even exist. It was so good that I chugged the whole thing and came back the next day for more. There's also restrooms in the back that can be opened with a code, lots of tables to do work or hang with friends, and high speed WIFI. The Starbucks is in a convenient location & after grabbing a cup of coffee, you could go down to the water and walk around!

The other location is a franchise store inside the Marriott hotel, this branch is located close to Framwellgate Bridge and the train station. This location marks the 69th Starbucks store I have visited worldwide. This branch is quite nice, it has obviously been refurbished recently so does look / feel newish, the decor is nice. It also accepts Starbucks cards and has online ordering, it is known as the Framwellgate Bridge branch on the app. The service was okay, some staff members did seem nicer than others which made the service average out as excellent, for example I asked about the pouring machine for the Lime sample refresha, a member of staff just told me how to turn it and refused to move and help me, when it didn't work but another member of staff volunteered, it was like the weirdest version of good cop bad cop between Starbucks baristas. I ordered a Venti Iced Vanilla Latte with Blonde Espresso and Whipped Cream with light ice, the overall coffee quality was good, to an average standard. The toilets were accessed through radar key for disabled or standard toilets, they seemed clean. In all, this is an above average Starbucks store, maybe slightly above average with decent service overall, and this branch has a slightly good relaxing feel to it, hence warranting a medium to high three star rating, the slightly poor selection of merch such as not stocking the "You are here collection" mugs and issues with some staff members here who were working, do let this branch down slightly.

This is one of two Starbucks locations inside Durham, technology wise it is probably one of the worse mainly down to the fact they don't have online ordering and they don't accept Starbucks cards, which is the opposite compared to the other store. For me, this is another moment where I feel I have reviewed this place before but it seems I have not. Inside, the branch is quite nice and uses traditional Starbucks decor, which can be uncommon sometimes for Starbucks branches inside hotels which are franchises, with this one being owned by Marriott rather than Starbucks, there are entrances in and out through the Marriott, in which this branch is located in and street level too. The service always seemed good when I visited in the past, but sadly on a recent trip on a more recent trip to Durham in 2017, where I spent a couple of hours in the town on a trip to Newcastle and the Tyne and Wear region, I struggled to even communicate with a member of staff who told me "Yes this is a Starbucks", when I asked about the acceptance of Starbucks cards. This branch sadly in a service aspect seems to have declined by a significant amount, and in a way I'm beginning to question even the need for this branch, with it being inside the hotel and not in the more central location in which the Framwellgate Bridge Starbucks is around a 1/4 of a mile away in Durham, so I sadly feel this branch only deserves two stars, which also puts into consideration the slightly higher pricing with the store being a franchise.
