I found the medieval city to be unbearably crowded during daytime hours but as soon as all of the day visitors left I could appreciate the city and for this reason I think staying in the city is the only way to go. By doing so you'll have a few hours of solace in the morning and evening before/after the hordes of tourist arrive/leave. During my visit to Carcassone we sought refuge at Hotel de la Cite in advance of our dinner reservation at a nearby restaurant later in the evening. In the lounge we enjoyed an excellent bottle of wine while snacking on some of the best olives I think I have ever eaten. Right off of the lounge there was a beautiful patio with breathtaking views of the city walls and surrounding countryside. Service was unobtrusive and elegant; I would definitely stay at this hotel.

The room was very modern and clean. It had all the amenities of a big city hotel. Staying inside the city walls was a magical experience, starting from the minute our complementary shuttle driver picked us up at the car park outside the walls. He then maneuvered through the medieval streets that were built for pedestrians, horses and carriages and now are mobbed by tourists. We managed to get to our room without hitting any tourist or any wall. Anyways, we ended up staying here two nights and we would have stayed longer if we hadn't had other traveling plans in place.

Overall, an excellent and affordable choice. We will certainly keep it on our list for next time visiting the area!

There are parts that are still under construction which could have affected the rating but in the grand scheme of things, the quality of service and the hotel surpassed everyone's expectation. The hotel is contemporary, chic and very clean, not all the rooms have a view. The bathroom and bedrooms are clean, meticulous. The hotel staff is very professional, polite and very helpful! They actually care about their clientele. Had an issue with the shows and their rep came up within 5 minutes to fix it. No "let's wait for our technician to come in 3 hours". Breakfast is also included and a nice small bar for drinks. Most of the staff seems very happy to work there and it shows. Thanks for the great stay! Sad to only have been there one night! Oh and the city Carcassonne wasn't half bad either!

It's been 10 days and I still haven't heard a peep. In short, I will never stay at this hotel again. It's over priced for its (un)cleanliness & an over done attempt at modernizing their (what could have been) quaint "luxury" hotel. I really don't have a lot of faith that they'll care what I write. If you also check out their Trip Advisor reviews you can see a lot of extremely defensive & downright snotty responses by the owners or management. Some might say this is the "French way..." so...et voila! If you like to be accosted by horribly repetitive dance / techno, or American remix songs you'll be right at home at this place - because it fills their lobby and the outside dining area (you cannot avoid it when getting to your room). It's not relaxing. Not to mention the SMELL. When you walk into the lobby you'll be smothered in perfume that may make you get a headache. I didn't find their hotel to personify any of the images they create on their website - it's not relaxing, not friendly, not inviting, and not family friendly. It's also dirty and their employees are less than helpful. When I tried asking one staff member whether the outdoor hotel jacuzzi is ever heated (because it was FRIGID when I used it) I was met with "je ne sais pas" ("I don't know") more than once. The heat pump in our room, which also serves as an ac unit, was disgustingly dirty and unsanitary. The thing was teeming with dirt and mold on the inside. There were spots of old dried blood immediately visible on the bedspread when we walked into the room (I was too nice & TIRED to say anything). There is ABSOLUTELY no privacy in the bathroom, which has very low windows (about groin high). When you go into the toilet / shower area you are literally standing naked in front of the window that doesn't have any drapes. The shower head it extremely large and it's a rain shower head so you literally feel as though you're drowning in the shower - there's no escaping the water to take a breath. The tub didn't hold a fill. The room had a loud hum in it even when all of the electrical was killed. There are no screens (which I understand is common) but that means you'll literally be eaten alive by these Tiger Mosquitoes if you're attractive to them (look them up, it's real!) Before we arrived, even though I had booked a spa soak months in advance, nobody bothered to email me that half of my spa soak would be dysfunctional - with no access to the steam or sauna. When I arrived, still, nobody told me. Then at my appointment they tried to charge me the normal price & I had to negotiate a discount !!

This hotel however is absolutely lovely. The staff are polite and friendly. The rooms and beds are exceedingly nice. The breakfast was excellent and I love the two dogs that lay around looking for attention.

Pulling into the dirt driveway you may be tempted to turn around and find another hotel. But that would be a mistake. This B&B is a real find for those who are willing to look past the rough exterior. First of all, there's the location. You could not ask for better. You get a clear, unobstructed view of the Cite, so close that you almost feel like you are ready to lay siege to the fortress. From the door of your room to the drawbridge is about a five-minute walk. In contrast to the outside of the building, inside the rooms are clean, modern, and extremely comfortable. The shower in our room was the most spacious we had in Europe. The AC worked very well, and we had no problems connecting to wi-fi. Breakfast is included in the price, and was not terribly thrilling...fresh croissants were the highlight. The only real complaint we had was that the outdoor stairs leading down to our room were a bit slippery and treacherous. The warm and friendly staff speak no English, but unlike most places in France, they cheerfully worked through our communication barrier. Very, very nice people who run a great hotel. If you are looking for an affordable place to stay in Carcassone, this is it.

As long as you're on the 2nd floor or above, you should try to request the room with the view of the fortress! :) Free wi-fi. We also had dinner here in the evening, they cooked up some lamb, veggies, and dessert. It was OK...not too shabby, beats having to venture out to find some food in the dark.

I don't think we could have picked a better time to explore the walls and valleys of the ancient city of Carcassonne, replete with tails of Cathar heresies, witchcraft and inquisition. The drafts and gusts of the mountainous winds (the ever present "mistral") can't be ignored in a building of this age - doors will slam and windows will shudder.... ghosts? Well all-in-all nice ones, they put up with my snoring! A family runs this beautiful charming hotel that provides parking as well as a rather lovely breakfast. They actually have food to order too and their tiny open bar was a respite for me when I needed that midnight tipple of rose wine! Very economical considering its historicity and the beds are nice, the armoirs vast and the history of where you're at - well, incalculable - but made all the more enjoyable by a multilingual staff (Spanish is as much a second language here as English - gracias a Dios parami!) that are ready to make you part of the family. One of their nicest touches - they provided a remarkable collection of post cards and helped you with postage to let your loved ones know you are having way more fun then them! In short, a treat!
