Whether you're a complete beginner, returning after time away, or an experienced hobbyist or competitor looking to add layers to your game, Mission Grappling Club has something for everyone.
Coming from a wrestling and martial arts background, I've trained at many BJJ academies across California over the past 15 years - from big-name gyms to smaller mom-and-pop shops. What stands out to me about Mission Grappling Club is its combination of genuinely high-level instruction, skilled training partners, and a welcoming, down-to-earth culture that makes you want to keep coming back.
Even after years on the mats, I'm constantly learning, refining techniques, and being challenged to evolve my game. There's a great mix of experienced upper belts, active competitors, and newer students bringing different styles, perspectives, and strengths to the room. The coaching is thoughtful and technical, the training is challenging, and I've personally seen that preparation translate into competition. There's room to grow regardless of where you're starting.
I particularly appreciate the teaching philosophy of Adam, the owner and head instructor. He's an encyclopedia of Jiu-Jitsu knowledge, constantly staying at the forefront of how the sport evolves, but it's his open-mindedness that really sets him apart. Rather than insisting there's only one correct way to do things, he encourages students to explore techniques, develop their own styles, and learn from each other. Bring something you saw online, learned elsewhere, or developed yourself, and he'll engage with it. If it's effective, he might even add it to his own game! Having trained in more traditional environments where instruction revolves around the instructor's preferred game, I find this incredibly refreshing.
That curiosity and thirst for knowledge permeate the gym from the top down. You'll see black belts constantly tinkering with techniques, studying the latest developments in Jiu-Jitsu, and refining their games rather than relying on what they've always done. It's infectious: everyone has something to contribute, regardless of rank, and the learning never ends.
That philosophy is built right into the classes. The dedicated A/B drilling rounds let you and your partner work on whatever you're trying to improve - whether that's the technique of the day, something interesting you saw on Instagram, or specific skills you're developing to reach the next level. It's a great way to take ownership of your own martial arts journey.
Adam also approaches belt promotions thoughtfully. From your first stripe to your black belt, progression is an ongoing, two-way conversation about where you are and what you're working toward. He wants students to genuinely feel ready, so you're both on the same page and promotions feel earned, not handed out or transactional. There are no belt promotion fees either, which I really respect.
Another standout is how tech-forward Mission Grappling Club is. The gym has its own app with a free instructional video library covering fundamental positions, techniques, and submissions - a fantastic resource for beginners when everything can initially feel overwhelming. One of my favorite features is being able to watch recordings of your own sparring rounds after checking into class. Seeing how you actually move, reviewing your decision-making, and catching details you miss in the moment is an incredibly valuable learning tool at any level. You can even request your favorite songs for the training playlist, which is a fun touch!
The facilities are another big plus. There's a huge amount of mat space, so even during busy classes, there's room to roll without constantly worrying about colliding with other groups or having people roll on top of you. If you've trained on crowded mats, you know what a difference that makes. There are also multiple private, individual bathrooms and showers instead of communal facilities - a welcome convenience when training around work.
Most importantly, the people here are awesome. There's a great balance of competitive intensity and camaraderie, without the unnecessary egos or intimidating atmosphere you might expect from a high-level martial arts gym. There's no strict uniform requirement, and cross-training at other academies is welcomed. People are approachable, supportive, and genuinely invested in helping each other improve. You can train hard, have fun, build friendships, and feel like part of a community rather than just another membership.
Whether your goal is fitness, self-defense, learning a new skill, making friends, or competing at a high level, I highly recommend giving Mission Grappling Club a shot. Take advantage of the free trial, try a couple of classes, meet the coaches and students, and see if it's the right fit for you. You might just find your new home on the mats!
