Of course I was squeamish at the thought of letting someone tamper with my eyes, so when I decided that I was ready to pursue this option in 2008, it wasn't a decision that I made lightly. I did my research, read the horror stories about what could go wrong and resolved that I would undergo the surgery only if I were considered a good candidate. I'd rather keep wearing glasses than lose my eyesight. When I asked my optometrist about LASIK surgery he directed me to Dr. Frank Owczarek at Eye Care of Delaware. Before I actually met with Dr. Owczarek I underwent extensive testing to evaluate my suitability for LASIK surgery. Unfortunately, I was informed that I was not a good candidate for LASIK due to my extreme degree of nearsightedness and the thinness of my corneas. However, Dr. Owczarek informed me that I was likely a good candidate for a newer procedure - implantable collamer lenses (ICL). Having never heard of this procedure, I initially dismissed it and accepted that I would wear glasses for the rest of my life. However, after some reflection I researched the ICL procedure and decided to undergo the further tests required to evaluate my suitability for this procedure. Dr. Owczarek and Dr. Mitchell (the resident optometrist) answered all my questions and made sure that I understood the risks before I made my decision. I decided to go for it. Dr. Owczarek and his staff were great during all stages of the surgery, from preparation through postoperative followup. During the surgery itself I had full confidence in Dr. Owczarek. The guy not only has his MD, but also a PhD. (in optics I believe). Not only is he a smart guy, but he has a good rapport with his patients as well. Most importantly, I couldn't be happier with the results of my surgery. Today I have vision better than 20/20. Unlike some ophthalmologists who only perform LASIK, Dr. Owczarek has no incentive to push LASIK over any other procedure. He is most concerned with finding the most appropriate solution for his patients. I wouldn't hesitate to recommend Dr. Owczarek and Eye Care of Delaware to anyone considering refractive surgery.

I need cataract surgery in both eyes. My initial appt went smoothly and I got 2 appts, one for each eye. Dates but no times - " we'll call you a few days before with the time". I was out of the country the week before my first appt date (on a Monday) and got a message - you need a medical clearance first. Well, that wasn't happening a thousand miles away. My fault totally. When I called back, there's no provision to leave a message to the office, and the receptionist is clueless. I called back the (different) number I had gotten the original message from, and voila! An answering machine. No response until the Monday of the first eye from some lackey. "Ok we'll cancel today, but next Monday you're on for the other eye and someone will call you to give you the time and reschedule this one". No calls. I got my health clearance and sent it over. On Wed I called back the same clueless receptionist - do I have a time?? "Oh they'll call you a few days before". ??? It is a few days before!!! No calls. On Fri I tried again. Oh, the office is closed. No provision for leaving a message. I called the answering service to leave a message. Sorry, can't do - call back during business hours. Here it is Monday of my appt - no calls. Needless to say, I didn't go. Midday, and no calls. I'm done with them - I made an appt elsewhere. There are plenty of other providers around here. (Oh, and I left them a nastygram on their website this morning - no response) DONT GO THERE!!!!!

You spend more time with the technicians than the actual optometrist. The technicians don't explain what they're doing but they're the ones that provide your perscription info to the doctor. The Optometrist simply checks their work. When I was finally seen by the doctor, they did not contact an actual exam. They dilated my eyes but did not check the pressure even though I have a family history of glaucoma. I have no confidence in the technician or doctor to be honest. I'm never going back.

And most recently, their doctors are retiring, I guess, and they don't have enough Physicians to take the appointments that they're canceling, it's very frustrating when you set up an appointment 6 months to a year in advance and then a month before your appointment, they just drop you, cancel and say, sorry, we're doing the best we can. She was not in a hurry to leave and go to the next patient but was genuinely in the moment in the exam room with me. I would recommend her to anyone but I chose her specifically for her expertise with auto immune disease. The equipment was cleaned by the tech and by Dr. Lin and she cleaned her hands before and after every time she touched me. As a medical professional her attention to infection control and prevention means a lot.
