I love Ernie's! They have knowledgeable staff who don't make biking seem like an unreachable activity. I've been to shops in other places around Portland, and man, did I feel out of place... Can you say too expensive and fancy? It's seems like biking has gone the way of dining in the town. Ernie's has just what you need to get your family on mountain bike trails, the road, or just to and from school. They even have trikes and unicycles! What??? Needed a tubeless tire replaced. Advised they needed at least 24 hours after doing a proper fix, clean the rim, new tape, etc, to make sure it holds air. Sounds like a good quality approach. Long story short; picked up the bike prior to a weekend trip. Bike less than 24 hours has a flat.... Add more sealant, luckily friend has a pump that works off his truck, then "POP, POP", 2 seams set! Did you really do what you said or just charge for it? Was an expensive tire repair. Stopped in on my drive by to a meeting and was immediately greeted by one of the staff. The owner was there and helped me pick out some bike pedal clips and even shared some tips on keeping safe on the road. I ended on picking up some other clothing items I can use and learned that good customer service still exists! Thanks for being great people and so helpful! I took my Giant brand mountain bike in for a tuneup and repair at this establishment and stated upon dropping my bike off "fix anything that needs fixing that will make the bike like new". Money was no object. At the time of drop off, my gear shift pods were in working order. Once I received my bike after my tuneup which included wire replacement and a tire replacement, I took it for a spin at my home (in retrospect, I should have test drove the bike at the establishment). When I went to ride my bike, my gear shift pods were no longer working. I have since communicated through Facebook messenger and by telephone with the owners who stated "most people don't want these replaced and just shift without the pods, but this should have been discussed with you by the tech". Their response to this issue is for me to bring the bike back a SECOND time to be evaluated, and, if needed, the part may need to be ordered. I will need to pay in full for the gearshift pods which were working when I dropped them off. The only benefit given is the owners will charge the tuneup labor rate instead of repair labor rate which is reportedly lower. I am frustrated about this for multiple reasons. #1 the fact that I have return to the shop a second time #2 I asked for everything to be fixed the first time which did not occur #3 A part that was working on my bike was returned broken #4 I am receiving no compensation for the hardship of having to return twice and the broken part It pains me to write a poor review for a local establishment, but this frustrated me so much I cannot be silent read more

I was surprised there were not more reviews here. Bruce and the staff are kind, helpful and take all the time you need to help you understand what's going on with your bike, even if you are an absolute shy and intimated immature such as myself. And, they were so kind and friendly to my toddler, which as a newbie to the area, it warmed my heart. This place is just what you wished you remembered as your childhood bike shop. Bought my bike at Ernies two years ago . Love my bike ! Not so sure I received the service that others claim though . Never did a fitting at the purchase time . Recently took my bike in for a gear shift issue . As Bruce looked at it , he saw that it appeared to be a minor adjustment . Instead of taking 30 seconds to see if that was the solve , he had me book an appointment for nearly two weeks away . I later realized how simple a solve it was and made that adjustment myself . This is feedback about a purchase and installation I received at Ernie's Bike Shop in 2013. I am posting it only now because it is only now I learned that what I had been sold at the time was not what I was supposed to get. My bike is an LL Bean Run-A-Round Cruiser (made by Schwinn) that came with a simple, 3-pin & screw spring-tension-tightening braking system made by Promax. One of the brakes failed shortly after I purchased the bike and LL Bean paid for a replacement. Ernie's did the replacement with a Shimano Deore LX. NO bike shop knew what was wrong with that Promax and no one could fix it. So many shop visits. I ended up learning on my own how the brake works - hours of research - and I found out it was in fact defective and needed to be replaced, which I did at Ernie's Shop. Long story short, I know now how to repair a Promax 3-pin & screw spring tension braking system, and I wanted the same system back on my bike so I could take care of it myself. I explained this to Ernie's owner, I don't recall her name, and she recommended the Shimano Deore LX. Well, the Promax 3-pin & screw spring tension system works like this: the pins allow you to make gross adjustments to the spring tension and the screw allows for finer adjustments. The Shimano Deore LX also has "3-pins" and a screw, but those 3-pins do not effect the spring tension, they only re-orient the braking pad to the wheel. My guess is this is to allow for different type bike frames. The only part on this brake that changes the spring tension, is the tiny spring tension screw. So in other words, if the spring fails [significantly], you need a new brake. This is not the braking system I asked for. Now it is 5 years later, I'm just finding this out, and I can't do anything anymore about it. I can't imagine this mishap was intentional but all the same it stinks. I don't care that I got 5 years out of the Deore, I would've had many more if I had gotten what I asked for. Plus now I am grossly inconvenienced again, exactly what I was trying to avoid by getting the braking system I wanted. (ie. I don't own a car and getting to a repair shop is difficult, not to mention the delay & cost of the repair) Perhaps the [woman] shop owner who is not a mechanic, should not be making recommendations about bike parts.
