I'm from Iowa, and was looking for an honest, friendly dentist. I noticed a ton of dentists out here in AZ are pushy and recommend treatment plans that you don't need. I don't feel that way about Dr. Wiitala though! He is so trustworthy, thorough, and truly knows what he is doing! For an example, I consulted him about getting lip fillers. He told me I didn't need fillers because my lips were already full, but simply needed a "lip flip" instead (which ended up being two units of Botox). This is extremely cheaper than lip fillers, and he was honest, and instead of making more bank for himself, he told me what I needed. I recently started going to him for my lips after the consult, and he has done a phenomenal job. He makes me feel so beautiful and confident leaving the office when I get them done, and I couldn't be happier with my results! Highly recommend this office. read more

While most people don't like going to the dentist, I can truthfully say I don't mind seeing Dr. Wiitala. First off, he's one of the nicest guys and his staff is the same. The medical practice I work for refers to him quite often and our patients have been very happy with their experiences. The usual routine begins with a cleaning with the hygienist. That's the not-so-fun part. I've got a permanent retainer on my bottom teeth so they have to use an ultrasonic to clean up down there. It feels a little weird, but works wonders for keeping my teeth shiny and healthy. Dr. Wiitala comes in after to make sure everything looks OK and answers any questions. No one ever preaches to me about flossing, though it's always encouraged. Several months ago, a slightly discolored lump in my gums had me worried. I called and got scheduled almost immediately. Dr. Wiitala and a couple hygienists were waiting for me when I came in to give me a very thorough clean, identify the issue, and extract a small piece of food (gross, I know) that had lodged itself in deep. I was relieved to know it wasn't more serious. Bottom line: Dr. Wiitala is my go-to dentist. I've been pleased with every visit and I like knowing my smile is in good hands. read more

The sound of the drill, the smell of all the chemicals, the dread of knowing that they will most likely tell you things you don't want to hear about fillings, and cavities, and..... So, now that you know my feelings on the dentistry practice as a whole, let me tell you about Dr. Wiitala and his office staff. We moved to the Phoenix area in May and I knew that I needed to find a new dentist office and take care of a tooth that has been bothering me. We all put off going to the dentist, right? I opted on trying out Dr. Wiitala's office since they were covered by my company insurance and they had a 5 star review here on Yelp...what dentist gets 5 stars? I went in for a cleaning, x-rays and a consultation and I coudn't believe how nice everyone was - from Tiffany at the front desk to the hygenist and even Dr. Wiitala himself. I'm pretty used to the standoffish Dr. that comes in for five minutes and tells you the issues and moves on. Not here. Dr. Wiitala took the time to explain everything to me and made sure that I understood his reasoning for his recommendations, he asked me questions and made me feel like he really cared. I have been back to his office to get a filling repaired that had broken from a previous aged filling done when I was young and everyone was the same as the first visit. He even remembered things we discussed on my first visit and asked about them when I returned. The filling took less than an hour and every step of the way he and the assistant explained what they were doing and warned about any slight discomforts I may feel so I was ready in advance. Getting a filling, or any other dental work, is never necessarily pleasant, but when you have a kind, caring Dr. and staff to walk you through the process, it can only make things easier! Very much so appreciated Dr Wiitala and his staff. Upon arrival, I had given the receptionist my wrong insurance information. They were very patient with me and together, we figured it out. Even though it took some time to figure this out and it was well past my appointment time and I offered to reschedule, Danielle, the hygienists still took me back and worked, cleaned/X-ray my teeth. Dr Wiitala was very kind and did not sell me on anything I didn't need. I appreciated that very much...as that had been my experience with others, in the past. Recently I had two very small fillings done. I was told by the receptionist my portion was around $80.00. To my surprise I come home today and find a bill for $274.00. This is the 3rd time this has happened to me. I have never been to a dentist that repeatedly billed me a significant amount after my visit even though assuring me at the time of service that they checked my benefits. The last time they charged me an additional $400 after I already paid $800 out of pocket. Although the staff and doctor have been wonderful, attentive and skilled, the billing department and practice is unacceptable. I will be finding a different dentist immediately. Hopefully one that doesn't overcharge and repeatedly surprise their patient will high bills well after the service. Disappointing and so unprofessional!!!! It is always a great experience in Dr. Wiitala's office. Lindsay was my dental hygienist and followed all of the protocol for COVID-19. She did an excellent job and was very caring and conscientious to make sure I was comfortable at all times. The office is always meticulous and the staff really cares about their patients. I started going to this office in 2005 when it was run by Dr Almy, mostly because it was close to home and work. Dr Wiitala took over a couple years later and I am still fiercely loyal. A good friend of mine is also a dentist, but Wiitala will always get my business as long as I live here. My husband & I have been patience of DR. Wiitala's for 5 plus years and we have nothing short of awesome experiences every time we go. I have a tad extensive dental history with lots of work; root canals - re-root canals & fillings - re-fillings. - my recent visit yesterday shows and older filling so large needing be replaced and of course it time for a crown, but I'm excited to go because I have the BEST dentist ever. YOU WONT GET BETTER CARE ANYWHERE THAN YOU WILL FROM DR. WIITALA! Dr. Wiitala has been my dentist for over four years now and I couldn't be more grateful. My prior dentist was a wonderfully nice man who had been in practice for years and years. When he retired and sold the practice all of our family members had terrible experiences with the new Dentist and hygienists. I needed a new dentist. Ugh... I asked around my office because we all had the same dental coverage and I definitely didn't want to go to a new dentist without a personal recommendation. One of my colleagues, who had great teeth incidentally, recommended Dr. Wiitala. His office was quite a drive from both my work and home but I figured a great dentist is worth the drive a couple times a year so I made an appointment. Well, I soon discovered there had been quite a few advancements in dental technology that my previous, now retired dentist wasn't utilizing. My appointments had been exactly the same process as they were since childhood until I saw Dr. Wiitala. Needless to say, after more than 35 years of "your teeth look great, I will let you keep them awhile" reports Dr. Wiitala discovered, with the help of a dental camera, a couple of things that remaining unchecked could've become big problems. I also had a bad accident almost two years ago which resulted in a jaw injury (among other things) and ultimately learning I have significant signs of arthritis in my jaw. Once I recovered and could go to the dentist, I shared this with Dr. Wiitala and through his treatment which included a sleep study (yes, my dentist ordered a sleep study...fascinating), I learned I have sleep apnea. Dr. Wiitala's treatment was a sleep guard device, like a mouthpiece type of thing, rather than one of those machines people wear at night on their face which I never would've worn btw. Best thing that's ever happened to me. From the first week using my mouth guard I sleep so much better and my jaw NEVER hurts now. I could go on and on. From the wonderful Dr. Doyon that Dr. Wiitala referred me to when I needed a root canal, (yes eek, a root canal, but Dr. Doyon and his staff were amazing too) to the way Terry at the front desk works around my crazy schedule to set my appointments and the super nice and really skilled hygienists it's no wonder that Dr. Wiitala is still my dentist even though I live in Texas now. If I have my way he will the last dentist I see in my lifetime! You can't go wrong seeing Dr. Wiitala. A great dentist who really cares about his patients and their well being. read more

The receptionist was super cold not only with her phone greeting but in person, and she never answers the phone. The tools they use for taking Xrays (the ones that go in your mouth) are super old and corroded, and my teeth were nearly knocked out when the hygienist yanked the cord when she almost tripped while the tools were still in my mouth. I was then told that all my teeth were going to fall out and I had advanced gum disease, and that I needed extra cleanings (of course insurance won't cover it). Which was a surprise because I saw my previous dentist quite regularly. I left the office with the idea that I was going to need dentures at 26 and spend almost a grand on the 9 appointments they had me booked for. I also had to pay for the fluoride treatment they asked if I wanted (without letting me know it wasn't covered by insurance). The moral of this story is that this office definitely employs scare tactics and tries to not only squeeze you for all the money they can but make you think you're going to die. I'm not sure if this is the norm for Scottsdale but I got a second opinion that was way more down to earth and would never refer anyone to this office in the future or go back for treatment myself. Only reason for two stars instead of one is because the hygienist and dentist were nice. read more

Watch out! These guys have deceptive business practices. Simply put, they lie. They are "in it for the money". They are not patient-focused. Why? They wouldn't even check if my dental insurance will pay for the procedures they said I should have. As a new patient, I was told when I arrived that I needed full mouth X-rays. I said I would do them if my insurance company would pay for it. (I have my teeth checked and cleaned every 3 months, so I know I have great oral care.) However, they said based on my insurance, that it would be covered. So, I said, sure, go ahead; an extra X-ray won't hurt. However, they lied. They never checked with the insurance company. And, later, my insurance company refused to cover it. Upon calling them back, the receptionist (pseudo-office-manager) said she called the insurance company; but the insurance company had no record of her call. (Proof of the lie.) She was rude and disrespectful. However, I asked her to write off their mistake. Nope. She said she wouldn't since they "did the work". I then escalated to the dentist. He apparently didn't get the message, or he doesn't care either, because he wouldn't talk to me when I called (as he was with a patient) and he hasn't called me back to discuss. What a poor example of dental "care". My past dentists have been wonderful; they staff accommodating and honest; and their service outstanding. But there guys? Avoid Dr Wiitala's office at all costs. Find someone more reputable. More honest. More fair. read more

This review is a long time coming. Exceptional dentist and staff who really Care about you as a patient. I didn't realize how good I had it until I was recently in Vegas on a business trip and broke one of my molars. I went to the dentist of a friend who lived there and wow what a mistake, rude staff and a dentist who acted like I should kiss the ground he walked on. And then my tooth had to be redone because it broke again. So I called Dr Wiitala's office and let them know what had taken place, he was able to get me in the next day and completely fixed my tooth with a new crown that he did chair side on a computer. The tooth is beautiful, feels great and he did it all in less than 2 hours, I was amazed. Not only did Dr Wiitala treat me with great care and kindness but so did his staff, which they have always done, have you ever been to a dentist or MD who thanks you for coming and who treats his staff with such kindness? I purchased a groupon to get my teeth whitened before my wedding from this office. I Madeleine first apt with no problems. When I got to the office the front desk lady proceeded to tell me that the groupon had really expired (although the expiration date on the actual groupon was not for 4-5 weeks!) and offered me an addition service for nearly $200. I pointed out the expiration date and after having me wait she said they would honor it. Three months after I used the groupon I get a bill in the mail that has no description-just says past due" for $115! Place is shady! Wouldn't recommend it! read more

First off, I would like to say that I don't think I'm alone when I say I strongly dislike going to the dentist. With that said, today I had my first dental appointment since my move to California last July and it was one of the worst appointments I've ever had, out of any medical appointment. I won't go in to detail, but the office was a complete dump, they were unprofessional, untrained, not concerned with my time at all and when they finally did clean my teeth, it was so uncomfortable that I almost had to stop them mid-cleaning. The only thing I could think the entire time was how much I took Dr. Wiitala's office for granted. Needless to say, my search for the California version of Dr. Wiitala and Staff continues. Their expertise, professionalism, genuine kindness and investment in their patients does not go unnoticed and, for me, twice a year, it will be sincerely missed. Their office is truly second to none. I've been a patient of Dr. Wiitala for over 5 years. I work at Central & Camelback and make the 30 minute trip to his office (because it's worth it). I had my first filling in over 7 years yesterday, and I have to say the anxiety of the needle was not warranted. The topical they use is strong enough that I didn't even realize Dr. Wiitala had started giving me the Novocaine! No pain whatsoever for the first time in my life. Dr. Wiitala is the best dentist I have ever had. I have very complex teeth with a bridge and many dental issues. I had dentists in the past that really didn't know how to deal with these issues and only made them worse. I had major dentist trust issues after another dentist botched a root canal. Another dental professional referred me to Dr. Wiitala, and I have been going to him for 8 years now. He is also great with kids and has been taking care of my child's teeth since the age of 5. His staff is courteous and professional and always does a great job with cleanings. His front desk staff used to be really bad, but he's since hired a new front desk person who is great. Their office is really nice and clean on the inside. He also has a machine that can make crowns there that is quite impressive, so sometimes crowns can be done in one visit rather than two. They are always on schedule. I've never had to wait. read more
