This tour was EPIC! We are so grateful to have experienced this in our lifetime. We saw many shooting stars, constellations, a nebula, Pinwheel Galaxy, Andromeda! James and Dylan are knowledgeable; true experts. And they are fun! We had a memorable time, felt inspired, and feel moved by the perspective of where we are in our galaxy. 1. Booking experience: James was great at communicating, very detailed and responsive. 2. Getting there: the road was nicely paved, easy drive. The location was felt private, like you're on another planet, it's so neat. James was so kind to include the jeep in the photo too! Plan ahead with directions and texts, as you get higher, you may lose WiFi. Driving back at night to Kona side after the experience felt safe, as well! 3. The photos: such a cool way to remember the experience. James is an incredible photographer. I still can't believe he was able to capture these, and that we are able to have photos by him!

ABSOLUTELY BREATHTAKING! Pricey but worth every penny, my husband and I really enjoyed this experience. James was very knowledgeable and did a great job taking our pictures. Would recommend the stargazing tour to anyone visiting the Big Island!

My boyfriend and I loved this tour with James and the photos we got! We actually live on the island, so are no strangers to the dark nights that lack light pollution, and yet it still takes my breath away every time we reserve an evening to envelop ourselves in an open sky. What makes the stargazing even better is the expertise James provides, pointing out various constellations (many from the southern hemisphere can be seen here!), the stories, fun facts, and the close-up images we get to view in real time. He even showed us an ENTIRE galaxy! Which might make one feel small if he didn't remind us that we are all made of the same substances as everything we were looking at, just stars in different forms....all unified, all one. I have been very fortunate to have many friends that are amazing photographers, getting pictures with beautiful backgrounds, however, the pictures we got from this tour are some of my absolute favorites! Highly recommend getting the photo upgrade, it's definitely worth it! Pictures last longer than any event you experience, so they mean a lot to me as a memento. And rarely do pictures look like what your eyes actually saw, but these will! I came with several ideas for poses that we wanted to do and wore a red dress as his website suggests for color contrast. I especially love silhouette shots so this was the perfect opportunity. We never felt rushed and he guided us if we need to move in certain ways or adjust so that we could get the image we were trying for. Long story short....10 out of 10 recommend =)

My wife and I geek out about the night sky, but living in Honolulu or on Oahu for that matter gives us little opportunity to stargaze. When we had a staycation on the Big Island 2 years ago, we tried to book a Mauna Kea summit trip and found that no tours take children because it is recommended they not go higher than the visitor center. This time, I tried again and although I had no luck finding a summit tour, I did stumble across Epic Tours and so happy I did! Not only did we get to have a very similar experience, we were able to have photos to remember it by! James was great! He does a great job staying in touch and working with you, as well as keep you updated on the conditions, since the tour is dependent on the weather and lighting conditions. Since we went on Halloween, James was dressed up as a unicorn and he made the trip fun. He focused on a few subjects in the sky to give us great blown up views and seemed very knowledgeable. The tour starts at a meeting point between Mauna Kea and Mauna Loa. There is no hotel pickup, but I actually preferred this because of social distancing reasons. We opted to caravan from the meeting point anyway for this reason. It also gave us more freedom before and after the tour to do our own bit of stargazing and watching for shooting stars. We saw a lot since the moon had already set for the night. If you take this tour, I would suggest booking in advance and booking towards the beginning of your trip in case weather is not good, there is a chance to reschedule. The high resolution photo upgrade is also worth it if you ever decide to get a print of any of the photos. Otherwise, if you are good with only posting to social media, the low res photos Jame's shared with you will do.

If you have to pick one tour on the big island, this is the Big Kahuna. James does an amazing job of personalizing and altering this "all in one" tour, depending on the weather and Madame Pele's mood. He was constantly watching the sky and the clock, to make sure that we were able to fit in all the best that the island had to offer in the time we would be spending together. He keeps the group size small, seven or less, which keeps the tour moving and allows him to spend quality time with everyone. Giant lava tube that requires flash lights? Check Secluded water falls with locals pointing out safe swimming spots? Check A hardened lava field between the two largest volcanoes in the islands? Check Iconic waterfalls that are surprisingly not crowded? Check Huge banyan tree you can walk amongst? Check and for the grand cherry on top: The most incredible star gazing you will ever experience in a lifetime. It's truly mind blowing. We saw the biggest shooting star we have ever seen. I will leave some of the fun little touches he adds, so as to not spoil all of the surprises. His photography skills are one of a kind and the fact that he includes them as part of the tour package price is incredible. James is an incredibly safe driver and I felt safe and comfortable the entire tour. I am usually a nervous Nelly on the roads. My usually particular, Debbie Downer husband after James dropped us off at the end of the tour: Him: "What did you think of that tour?" Me cautiously: "I liked it. Did you?" Him: "I LOVED it. That was incredible." Big smiles all around. You will not be disappointed. Thank you so much James, for the tour of a lifetime!

This is an unforgettable, sublime experience. James was fantastic. He was knowledgable, accommodating, entertaining, and fun. he made sure that everyone's experience was sublime and special. The views are so spectacular it is difficult to put into words. This is a must-do adventure when on the big island.

What a great once-in-a-lifetime experience. As a vet teacher, I must say I was thoroughly impressed by Jame's ability to struck the great balance of both "educational" and fun with his content. Do wear light colors tho if u don't wanna end up "blending into the sky" ha! Big Thanks to James n Charlotte

Despite the clouds, James was super flexible and found a clear spot to get the amazing experience we'd had in mind when we booked a trip to Big Island. We found it well worth it, and I'm now wishing I could just step outside every night and see that view again. His photos are incredible and he was so easy to work with - very knowledgeable, too.

A TRULY Epic Tour that is worth both your time and money - I will recommend this tour to everyone that visits Big Island. Even if you ever hope to visit Big Island, put this on your bucket list! James, your guide, is a true expert on the stars and Big Island. He was knowledgeable, friendly and funny AND he has the right camera equipment to ensure you will receive amazing high-res photos you won't be able to get anywhere else. The icing on the top is that you do not go to the summit of Mauna Kea so for those worried about the high altitude at the top - this would be a great option for you! (See altitude warnings below). James also will cancel and fully refund your tickets if there is a full moon that will ruin the ability to see the stars, not like many companies that will continue with the tour if the skies are not optimal for stargazing. We actually could have gotten a different stargazing tour for FREE (through Chase points) and I don't regret having to pay for this one (detailed below why we switched). DATE OF VISIT: End of April 2022 PRICE FOR EXPERIENCE: 5/5 stars TOUR GUIDE: 5/5 stars COMMUNICATION PRIOR TO TOUR: 5/5 stars There are tours that are longer for the same price as this one, so I was hesitant to book this. However, timing the tours to the summit that are 6-8 hours and start at 4pm and end at 10-11pm was very difficult with our itinerary. Not to mention the possibility of altitude sickness (see more below). So, I was very happy to find this tour for 2 hours that is 8000-9000 elevation, as compared to 12-13,000 at the summit. You will almost feel like your in outer space with how pitch black it is with no other cars around you. Such an experience, like none other ALTITUDE: Warning that many can get altitude sickness and this is a warning for every tour. In fact, our tour guide said that he used to guide summit tours and they would always result in someone in the group passing out. Yikes. I get quite sick while traveling up any mountain (even just in the car), so I brought oxygen canisters that I bought on Amazon just in case, but didn't have to use them and felt fine during our tour. DRESS WARMLY: James has comfy and warm jackets for you, but the cool air and breeze still bites - similar to lake effect in Chicago. I brought thicker leggings, t-shirt and sweater and used one of the jackets and was freezing within the first several minutes. You can always escape to James' van or your own car, but then you'll miss such great parts of the tour. ADJUSTMENTS TO MEETING SPOT AND TIME and POSSIBLE CANCELLATION: Just note that it is a possibility your tour will be cancelled based on the conditions of the sky that night. It is recommended to book the tour towards the beginning of your time on the Big Island in case you can reschedule for later that week. James texts whoever booked the tour with the exact location and time as the tour gets closer (so note there may be adjustments but the changes are not far from the original estimate). PHOTO OPS: You will have PLENTY of time for photo ops and I 100% appreciate James' patience and willingness to get everyone the shots that they want. There was a couple that wanted to copy a pose that a couple after them did, and James was willing to get another shot of them. Be ready with how you'd like to pose under the stars PHOTO PACKAGE: We did not book the high-res photo package originally and James was super easy to work with to upgrade our photos TOUR GUIDE/RIDING IN THE VAN: We opted to ride in James' van where others followed in their own car. I would recommend riding in the van, as it's not that far from the original spot and you do miss out on information on the way there/back. As mentioned above, James is extremely knowledgeable and even shares about his time training for Mars. He has amazing camera equipment and a telescope to capture the moving stars and not look blown out - not available on your own or on other tours. He also makes it exciting and entertaining - not like some tours that start and it's the most awkward 2 hours of your life lol. BATHROOMS: There will NOT be bathrooms where you meet James. However, there is the Mauna Kea State Recreation Area (put it in Google or Waze) that is open 24 hours and has bathroom stalls, soap, sinks and even paper towels! And it's not far from where you will meet James

We did a 2 day package encompassing the islands most beautiful waterfalls, nature reserves, botanical gardens, volcanoes, beaches coffee farms on old town Hilo. On our first day with Jason our driver and guide picked us up on time and with a smile. He shared his knowledge along the way wearing a microphone in the van so everyone could hear comfortably. At the attractions he was with us giving us history of all the waterfalls. Whiles driving he told us about the sites inbetween. At lunch time he provided us a delicious meal from a local restaurant. Day 2 with our driver Derek was in another new van that was also comfortable and roomy. Derek took us to a working coffee plantation to see, smell and walk through the farm. At Kīlauea volcano national park where we got to see upclose and personal the caldera in all its majesty. All the time telling the history and recent activity of the volcano. We saw and walked on a beautiful black sand beach with segregated sea turtle nesting area where we saw a turtle swimming ashore and resting at waters edge before digging a hole in the black sand to lay her eggs in preparation for the next generation of turtle, we walked down and into a 30 meter lava tube and got to visualize the path of a whole lotta molten rock traveling through centuries before. Culminating the day's trip by stopping on a mountain top in almost complete darkness, the moon was in a waxing crescent and producing very little nighttime light. We bundled up to stay warm in the 50 degree Fahrenheit temperature to stargaze. It was refreshing in the cold air, outside the van huddled in a group while Derek pointed out, planets, stars, constellations and galaxies as we stood in awe of the majesty above us. Wasabi Tours, Jason and Derek were on-time, safe, informative and most of all fun to spend our time with. I highly recommend taking a Wasabi tour to REALLY see the big island. Thank you all!

The color of Mauna Kea with the moon shining on it was so magical all around us. There were some clouds that cleared pretty well by the end of our star gazing. Jeff, our awesome tour guide, used a laser pointer to help us see the constellations we usually can't back at home. The images on the digital telescope like nebulas, the moon & star clusters were an amazing addition to have as keepsakes. My husband and I felt he made the tour a great balance of learning and fun. He had the group feeling like family before we even left from the pickup lot. Things to consider: I do recommend following the moons cycles booking this tour/your trip if this is especially important for you to see as many stars as possible. The sunset and views of the observatory's make it awesome anyways :) I struggled with altitude sickness around 12,000 ft. Jeff had made sure to let us know beforehand if we experienced any issues to speak up. I was hesitant as I know it would mean turning the whole tour around, but some tingling turned to dizziness and then a brief fainting. He immediately stopped the bus and helped ground me and make sure I was completely okay & coherent before letting me know our options for the tour. We made it up to the top with 2 more (included in tour) stops and I felt better with each one having more time to acclimate :) Thank you Jeff!! You handled this so professionally and I appreciate your check-ins for the rest of the trip. It's cold even with parka and gloves. It's so worth packing warm shoes and layers. The bus had ac and heat so that was great! Do it if you can! Awe-inspiring! Such an unreal environment that makes you wonder about so many things. I also received a call the day before the tour and the lady answered all my questions. Addison was our guide. Our pick up point was Kona Crossroads Shopping Center. After this, we picked up the rest of the group at Queens' Marketplace. All in all, there were 14 people in the Mercedes Sprinter van (excluding Addison). The van was clean and customized with an area at one side that served as a mini overhead bin. We went to Mauna Kea Visitor Information Station. At its grounds, there was an opportunity to hike a little and see silversword plants (I did not see them though or maybe just did not know how to identify them). We had our early dinner there at about 4-4:30pm which was included in the tour. The veggie lasagna and brownie were good. Since this was about 9200 feet above sea level, I noticed that I easily got short of breath and lightheaded (which is not unexpected). The company provided warm Arctic style hooded parkas and one-time use gloves that kept us warm. We then proceeded to the observatories. A segment of the road up the observatories was not paved and it can be a little bumpy. By the time we got up the summit, the sun was indeed about to set. My lightheadedness and headache improved a little and I was able to enjoy the majestic view of the colorful sky and the clouds. A couple in our tour got engaged at the summit! After the sunset, we went to a lower elevation where we had the stargazing. We had warm beverage (choice of coffee, cocoa, apple cider) that was perfect for the very cold temperature. Learned about stars, planets, and had some astronomy review! Addison oriented us and showed us the stars. Using a Celestron telescope, we saw a few celestial bodies including binary stars, ring nebula (though it was very small to me), Saturn, and our moon. My acute mountain sickness was not too bad (and it got better with the descent) and I still enjoyed the experience. Bring your water bottle and don't forget to hydrate up there.

Once inside and everyone heads to the helicopter, the ground crew will open the gate so you can roll back down the ramp to walk level instead of using the steps out back from the porch like everyone else. Crew will assist you getting into the helicopter if you able to stand up but you will need some arm strength to pull yourself into the seat, the overhead grab bar gives the necessary swing point.) I did not realize that Kilauea had fountained the night before, glad I did not know because maybe we would have taken the option of cancelling when they offered it, due to the buffeting winds and slight mistiness. I know that others did reschedule, perhaps thinking it was going to be disappointing. But we were gungho, why not? They promised that if we had to turn around due to weather, we would be reimbursed. To be fair, a fountaining volcano is not safe to be near and so it means staying far back. We have been here through three eruptions so we did not feel deprived. And, the fiery display was over by daylight. As a surfer I have watched and lived among the island's locals with fascination for two decades, as the aloha spirit transcends everything they do, and Blue Hawaiian has earned its place of honor. The company has donated lifesaving equipment over the years to the various beach parks and the lifeguard department, which is managed by our Fire Department. The staff I met embodies that spirit as well. From the moment we set foot in the door, the prep process for our trip was smooth, swift, and relaxing. I hope you have as much as we did. Its a full 24 hours later and I am still buzzing from the natural high! Grab a friend or two, or five, and take the ride of your life!

Although we did many of the Big Island's excursions and activities, the BEST experience and true highlight for our family was the Dolphin Quest experience located on the hotel's property. As an added, unexpected bonus, our room looked directly down on the Dolphin Quest lagoon. We enjoyed watching and listening to the dolphins in their natural environment, even when the program wasn't running, right from our balcony. For us, Dolphin Quest was much more informative and ethical than what one might have at a sea aquarium or other "swim with dolphins" experiences, and it's nice to know that their fees go toward conservation and scientific research. What sets Dolphin Quest apart is that these dolphins live, socialize, and are studied in their ocean-fed, natural environment. Their encounter-and-swim program offered immersive interaction with the dolphins. The knowledgeable staff shared well-rounded information. Many staff have degrees in marine biology, veterinary care, or psychology. It was impressive to know that Dolphin Quest values the mental and behavioral health of their dolphins. Their dolphin ambassadors are much more than the "trainers" you may find at other venues. Additionally, Dolphin Quest provided morning demonstrations and information to hotel guests throughout the week in the hotel's primary lagoon area, and the grassy knoll area overlooking the Dolphin Quest lagoon is the perfect place to spend the morning or afternoon. You can watch the dolphins and staff, both during programs or while they work one-on-one, researching behaviors and socializing with the animals. Our Dolphin Quest experience had a strong impact on our family. It is the one excursion we would repeat. For anyone visiting, we strongly recommend prioritizing the Dolphin Quest experience above all other activities. If you can only choose one thing to do, our family agrees it should be Dolphin Quest. It truly is life-changing. And to Dolphin Quest on the Big Island of Hawaii, mahalo for an excellent experience and a memory to last a lifetime.

Now that I am here with my son I said, we are not missing this opportunity again. The trainers are very friendly and joyful. It is obvious that they love these dolphins and they love sharing them with their guests. They were very clear with safety instructions and also about respecting the dolphins and their environment. It was a five star experience (although the cost brings it down a notch). I know that a big portion of this expense does go towards conservation, research, and maintenance of the dolphin environment. But I also believe a big portion of the expenses are a money grab. Example: it does NOT cost almost 200 dollars for a photographer to take digital photos in addition to what you already paid for the experience itself, but that is what they charge for the digital photos package. Aside from the excessive costs, I think everything else was wonderful. The water is clean. The individual time spent with the dolphins is reasonable. The information given about their training and development was thorough and interesting. They even allowed our group (one of three) to be closer to the observation deck so my mom could easily watch since she has some mobility issues and could not easily sit on the lawn on the other side of the lagoon. The trainers were open to questions and really enjoyed answering them; it is clear that they know these dolphins well and they have learned their quirks. This experience was the highlight of this trip to Hawaii. Maybe the highlight of all of my trips here and I have been here more times than I can count.
