I love homemade fruit preserves so when I saw a display of Hilty's products in Bankhead Chocolates…read morein Bowling Green, I had to have a few. I bought pint jars of Peach, Apricot and Cherry. After opening the peach and the apricot a review is in order. I am sorry, but I just can't say much good about these products. My experience with the first two is that they are much too jellied with excessive pectin, to the point of being rubbery and unspreadable. It appears the cherry will be the same way. To make matters worse, the fruit flavors I was expecting are just not there. The peach was mainly sweet, with little peach flavor. The apricot is pretty much the same and I don't know how someone can hide the distinct flavor of apricots. We shall see what the cherry has to offer but they apparently have substituted juice and pectin for fruit. You can get a lot better in any supermarket. In this day and age where the term artisan has been worn out, it is important for people not to conflate local, homemade, handmade, artisanal etc with well made and good. I grew up in rural Iowa with nothing but homemade and nothing but local. Local does not matter if it is not good. Unfortunately people will see this local, apparently homemade product and assume it is like Grandmother used to make. They will either be disappointed as I am or won't know the difference because they did not enjoy the true advantages of the real thing. If Hilty was my Grandmother we would have asked her to stop.

They also have sandwiches and their outside board said they had cheese soup or chili in a home-baked bread bowl, but I was just interested in the pie. Old soda fountain (I had a a cherry Coke Phosphate) and nice little sandwiches. We both had reubens. They were good - not the best I have ever had but nice and a good size for lunch. Fantastic chocolate malts with bits of malt. Cool atmosphere and a flower shop to boot. It's simple quality food. And most of all friendly service and great atmosphere! Will definitely make the drive to come back with my dad, as he is a malt connoisseur - and these are great classic malts. I follow them on Facebook (and you should too) and have been so impressed with how many events they host. They are establishing themselves as a place for community meetings and events like coffee with a cop and large get togethers. The space is nicely setup and very cozy with tables and also couches and chairs. The counter is easy to find and order at and they have a case full of food items that all looked good (donuts, fritters, mini cakes). They have the coolest "small business wall"! Small businesses in the area stock their items on the shelves and them customers can buy directly from the business while at the coffee shop - candles, artwork, woodwork, honey, cups, all kinds of cool items! My mom ordered a frozen caramel latte and she really enjoyed it! I did realize right before leaving that they have hot chocolate, so you know I'm trying that next time I'm there! Prices were very affordable. Opportunities for improvement - I didn't see a public restroom or public wi-fi. Both of these are nice to have for the events they have and also to encourage people to stay longer and maybe become a place people hang out and work from.

We ordered our five cakes on April 22, and they aren't even going to be here in time for the event…read morewe need the cakes for, ONE MONTH later. I do not recommend placing an order with this company if you have hard dates because they will not take responsibility for lack of delivery on time. The proprietor stated she sent it on 3 day delivery, but i spoke with UPS with the tracking information and they stated it was shipped with 3-5 day ground delivery, and because of this I paid $28 for shipping for a product that will not be here in time. This was a decision made by the shipper and they are unwilling to hold themselves accountable for it. I'm sure these cakes are delicious, but they are $200 of junk now to us and they refuse to refund us even when it was their decision to not use the proper shipping method to get here in time. I tried to resolve it with the proprietor, but unfortunately she is non responsive.
