Budget Ireland is a grift and should be avoided at all costs. Regardless of the terms of your…read morereservation, they will claim that the insurance is inadequate and strongly insist that you purchase a pricey collision waiver. This is a form of self-insurance for them, as it is kept by Budget Ireland and added to a pot only to be used if necessary. If you refuse the purchase of the waiver, you will need to make an excess deposit of 2-3,000 euro, which will be billed if the car is damaged. In my experience, the agent was very rude and pushy, talking fast and acting exasperated with my questions. There will not be a walk around inspection of the car. Upon returning the car, if you did not purchase the waiver, they will most likely find damage and blame it on you regardless of when the damage occurred. In my experience, they insisted that I remain inside while they inspected the car. At this point you will be forced to sign an incident report and they will tell you that the car will be repaired at a dealership and you will receive an invoice in the coming days. The car will be repaired at Flynn Bros Garage. Flynn Bros. is the owning and operating entity of Budget Ireland. They will charge an exorbitant fee for a minor repair and will not provide photo evidence of the repair. So, that's the rub. They deny any insurance plan except their waiver (their "sure thing"), and if you deny the waiver and opt for the damage deposit, they will use it as an opportunity to pay themselves to repair prior damage to the car at a heavily inflated rate. 910 euro for the scratch in the attached photo. This may(?) not be illegal, but it is certainly unethical and amoral. BUT the two dudes at the rental counter - one was supposedly the manager were the rudest, most unhelpful, uncaring terrible deliverers of customer service imaginable. with only 1 qualified driver in our group and a whole trip based on getting the car, they basically just wanted us to go away. we kept trying to come up with potential solutions and they kept shutting every one of them down and suggested we somehow get to the counter at the airport to see if any other company would work with us. I had a data sim and was able to check with SIXT and asked if I could use their phone to speak to someone there and that was the most they could do - they did allow me to use their landline to call and speak to someone at SIXT who was so kind and suggested we go to their counter and a manager there could decide for themselves if they would accept my documents or not. surprise ! they did. no problem. SO NO BUDGET RENT a CAR EVER AGAIN in IRELAND - especially this office. A little bit of kindness and understanding would have gone a long long way here. Also while we were standing there trying to regroup as we were pushed to the side I heard a poor gentleman told that he'd have to shell out 100s of euros for a windshield chip that he insisted was there when he rented but the counter dude said without a picture he couldn't do anything about it. Due to the pandemic, shuttles were no longer taking you between terminals to pick up the rental cars. We found out the hard way after a bit of wandering that they are located in Terminal 2, Second floor (arrivals), across the bridge. 2. Cost. Listen. This shit is expensive. Go into it knowing it's expensive to rent a car. We checked other cities (Galway), other providers, all of it was expensive. In the end we went with Hertz because my Chase Sapphire card covered the cost with my points. Is it expensive because the pandemic? Is it expensive because the US dollar is less than the Euro? Is it just expensive? Who knows the reasons why. Cost me about $1000 for the car (Skoda Octavia, automatic transmission) through my points with Chase. This price included the basic liability insurance. 3. Insurance. Yo. READ THE FINE PRINT OF YOUR CREDIT CARD POLICY. Certain countries do not allow your credit card to provide rental car insurance. This applies to Ireland, Israel, and who knows what others. This is a law in the country, this is not the teller scamming you. If anything maybe it's the government scamming you, collecting money from tourists. In addition to the basic liability we purchased extra insurance for the car for this reason. I did not want to be caught up in red tape if I wrecked this car driving in a foreign country. This was a nice 90 Euro up charge in addition to the base price. Bless. 4. Leaving the airport. There is a toll. In fact, if you're driving west to the country side there will be a few tolls to use the highways. Overall pretty cheap. Spent less than 15 Euro over the two days. You can pay with card or cash but they do not give change. 5. Driving. There's the obvious: driving on the left side while sitting on the right side. Then there's the not so obvious: the roads. If you are driving out to the country side, oh my god get mentally prepared for it. These roads are NARROW. Imagine a two lane street, but instead of being two full lanes, it's like 1.85 lanes. There is no shoulder, there is no side walk, and those roads are windy. I swear every time we came around a blind corner, and there were many, there was either another car, a pedestrian, or a sheep. You heard that right, folks. Sheep. Once there was even a large truck that we had to drive into a ditch to avoid. Ahhh, thank god for that extra insurance. 6. Gas. You don't prepay gas here. You pump and then go inside to pay what you owe. To me this was wild. I told the attendant that this would never work in America. Everyone would steal the gas. He replied that people steal gas all the time. HA, the Irish are not better than us in that regard. Also, they refer to gas as petrol, diesel as diesel, and gas as natural gas. Return your car with a full tank to get your gas refund back. When you rent, they hold the cost of a full tank as a deposit. All in all this was an adventure. It was expensive AND stressful. But was it worth it to see the Irish countryside? ABSOLUTELY. Temper your expectations and enjoy the ride. You're on vacation.

When reserving the car, I was careful to avoid getting a manual shift car unexpectedly as with my last car rental in Dublin. I specifically requested an automatic and thankfully got one this time. If you don't clarify that you want an automatic, by default, you'll get a manual shift. On my most recent trip, I ran into a different issue. When I arrived at the rental desk, I was immediately asked for letters from my insurance company and my doctor. For the insurance letter, I planned ahead knowing I would need to prove I had insurance, but I had no clue I needed a doctor's letter. I tried calling my primary care physician in Connecticut, thinking I might be able to obtain such a letter that they would prepare and send as an email attachment. With the time zone difference, this was not going to work. All of this fuss wasted a lot of time. I was able to get a driver to assist me, but this was not the plan. I ended up being chauffeured around Ireland for ten days. When I got back to the USA, I thought the doctor's letter requirement had to be in the fine print and I missed seeing it. THE DOCTOR'S LETTER REQUIREMENT TO RENT A CAR IN IRELAND WASN'T IN THE FINE PRINT OF THE AVIS RESERVATION. It was just a surprise sprung on me with no advance notification. The next issue had to do with liability insurance that I had purchased at the time of my reservation. When reserving the car online in the USA, I found out I wouldn't be covered for liability, so I paid $56 to Avis for this coverage only to be told by the Avis personnel at the Dublin Airport that it was impossible for me to have paid for such coverage since, by law, all car rentals in the Republic of Ireland come with liability coverage included. Upon my return to the USA, I sent a request to Avis for a refund of the unnecessary coverage. Months passed and Avis, although they acknowledged receipt of my claim, never responded beyond that acknowledgement. I'm now back in the USA where I continue to be an Avis customer and am completely satisfied with the company and its personnel stateside. I doubt I will use Avis ever again while travelling abroad.

Which I paid tax and…read moreinsurance on, which I tipped money into for fuel, which I had to put through the NCT twice, which for all I put into it, sat outside my house half the time accumulating dust, and as luck would have it in the end, attracted attention for a little gang of joyriders who would ultimately bring it to it's untimely end. I was sad at the time. But more for the poor little car than me. It had first been neglected and then been abused to the highest level. But now I was free. I bought a bike, and cycled everywhere. Turns out I don't need a car living in the city! But hang on, I do. What about when it's raining outside and I need to go do my weekly food shop? Or when I need to go to IKEA and spend loads of money on loads of stuff I don't need? I can't cycle then. Enter Go Car. You pay 45 eurits to register and get your card, and from then on, whenever you need it, it's there. All you need to do is find your nearest depot (which actually just means a parking area), book in your car, swipe your card on the windscreen, and away you go. You can pay per 15 min block, so you can have it for as little or long as you like. You pay a combination of time and distance, but I find it unequivocally works out cheaper than a taxi and is so much handier when you just want to be driving around on your own time. It's not super cheap now, but for hassle factor, it's definitely worth it. It's also worth pointing out that you can park for free anywhere in the city with it, so that saves more money again. My only niggle with it would be that you have to drop the car back the same place you picked it up. So, though they say that it's the same model as Dublin Bikes, it's not really. It would be great to be able to drop it off at any depot as well, but perhaps when they get bigger and more well known, that's something they can work on.

Picked it up, everything seemed fine-- since it was connected to the charger when I arrived, I didn't notice the car had only 3% charge (3 percent!) until I got an alert while driving less than 10 minutes. Pulled over, looked for an emergency place to charge. Found one, made it there, all chargers in use. Waited as long as I could before having to call a taxi to get to my appointments. GoCar says there's nothing they can do, no refund (except for a small "inconvenience" credit), and they refuse to go out and charge the car and return it themselves. They ruined my entire day, I almost missed my appointments, and I had to not only spend more money on Uber to get to my appointments but also to go back to collect the car and ALSO CHARGE IT on my personal time (or they would charge me again for failing to do so, she said! Unbelievable!) and then return it to the original spot. I DID NOT GET TO USE THE VEHICLE AT ALL. Worst company, worst customer service, would never use GoCar again ever under any circumstances. EDIT: I can hardly believe this, but after going after the car, charging it, returning it plugged in to charge even more, and using the app to end the trip early, this morning we received an alert that the car was overdue and I had to phone them yet again. Just what I wanted, to spend more time dealing with this idiotic company. At least this second rep was polite.
