I've been donating blood since 1990 while I was still in high school. It just felt like something I…read moreneeded to do so I did it. The phlebotomist's have always been so nice and gentle. The only time I've felt any pain in donating is usually with a new person being trained and they always have help so it's not bad, it doesn't happen very often either. They all seem so happy and thankful you came in to donate too. This place in Enid is very clean and they have plenty of snacks too. I believe what made me keep donating was when they told me I had babies blood (O-) and they really needed my blood to save lives. They said I could donate to anyone. I think that's what hooked me in, plus it helps that you get a free t-shirt too! My mother and brothers used to go and we'd start a competition on who could donate the fastest. They tell us to squeeze the little hand held stress ball every 3-5 seconds...well when they weren't looking we were all squeezing as fast as could to see who would win. It was fun and passed the time. A couple of years later we were able to donate our blood to certain people or organizations, churches and such. I donated to my church, to people I knew that were in the hospital..just anyone I could think of that might need it. Also, in those past years they made a website where you can sign up to be an lifetime donor, which is pretty cool...and now you get points with every blood donation. I usually save my points up to get merchandise off their website. I've gotten caps, collared shirts, gym bags, fanny pack, gas cards, I've even saved up enough points to get a jacket. The jacket needs the highest points. I keep my award pendants on my cap as well for how many gallons of blood I've donated. I've only came to the Enid building a few times, when I was called to come up there. Most of the time now I donate in my town or surrounding town with their mobile units. They had talked me into donating RBCP (Red blood cell platelets) which uses a machine, takes longer but on the bright side it counts as two donations. It does give more points but you have to wait longer to donate again. I donate with my kids now and haven't been in a competition in many years since we hardly ever start at the same time and they have more beds so a lot of times we don't even see each other. In order to donate to a person or organization now you have to ask for a paper to fill out. They also like people to answer the questions online and print it out the day you come to the drive so it makes your time and theirs go faster. I've gotten calls from the blood institute over the years wanting to know if I want to hear from someone that received my blood..of course! A recording would come on the phone from parents thanking me or even some adults. It feels so rewarding to be able to save someone's life out there that I'll probably never meet. Donating blood is definitely something I'll continue doing as long as I can and I'll always use the Oklahoma Blood Institute to do it.
