Englund's Subs On Del Prado 5-31-24 My wife and I were hungry for an Italian Sub today. We wanted something that was fresh and tasty, so we want down to Englund's Subs. We got the around noon and there was a little bit of a line to order but it moved fast. This place is not fancy with all the bells and whistles. It's very basic with just a couple tables inside a chip rack, meat cooler, soda coolers and order counter. It was clean and tidy; we were able to sit at one of the tables. Once at the counter I ordered a what's called a Whole Super Italian Sub that my wife and I would split. They have this sub in 7 inch which they call the 1/2 sub and 14 inch which they call the whole sub. Our whole sub was 14 inch of Ham, Capicola, Pepperoni, Salami, Provolone with Tomatoes, Lettuce, Oregano, Onion, Mayo, Oil, Vinegar, Salt, and Pepper. All that for about 14 bucks. This sub was large enough for 3 to 4 people to eat it, I mean it was packed full. Everything tasted fresh as we watched them slice a lot of the ingredients from the deli counter that went into this sub. The bread was also very fresh and not hard or chewy. This was and is one of the best subs you will find in this area. We could not eat the entire sub and took the leftovers to the nurses at the Cape Coral Hospital. If you want the BEST subs, go here. This review was for the Super Italian Sub only, but I am betting the rest of there subs are just as good. That's why a lot of locals go here, they know where the good food is. Sandwich: 4.5. Came by for a Monday lunch. Not busy inside but many call ahead orders. Even though only two people ahead of me with simple single sandwich orders, it took about 20-25 mins. It was worth the wait. I ordered a half Blockbuster "all the way" and it was very good and big. I'm glad I didn't order a whole. Service was efficient. Ambiance is more of a takeout restaurant. If you are in the area and want a grinder this is your place. The meat is sliced for each sub. And the lettuce is done sub style. We had three different styles and two different sizes. Ham with cheddar cheese, super Italian both full size. Then a half size was turkey and provolone cheese. After all the meat and cheese is sliced you can pick all you toppings. My family just goes crazy for Englunds subs. My nephew gets off a plane from CO and the first place he want to go is Englunds. There is virtually 1 lb of meat on their 12" sub and cheese and toppings galore, if that's your preference. The sub is prepared in front of you and it is freshly sliced, for every order. Ordered 6 sandwiches on Friday around 4:45pm. We were told it would be a 45 min wait so pick up time would be 5:30. When we got there at 5:30 not one sandwich was made. What a great find, a classic sub shop, no frills no tacky marketing or huge posters of sandwiches or cheesy classic rock playing in the background. Just two guys making subs, the classic way. I had to stop by and try these out myself, since subway and Jimmy Johns just doesn't cut it anymore. It was fairly empty but while I ate plenty of what seemed to be "regulars" walked in. I ordered a ham and cap, with provolone, pressed (half since the whole sub looks to be over 12 inches), they have coke (from Mexico) so I had one of those. I don't usually drink pop but thought what the heck! So I will say, I did feel as if the guys were not really the friendliest guys, they seemed to be very nice to other clients (asking them how their sandwich was and sparking conversations with them) but did not say a single thing to me. Not even when I left and said thank you, they ignored it and did not respond. It was strange, they were minimally cordial but in no way could it be described as polite or friendly toward me. They gave me an unwelcome feeling, it was strange I've very rarely felt that way. The sandwich was sloppy but tasted ok. This is not gourmet people, think more mom n pop sub shop, or a sandwich you'd make at home. Mine had a tad too much mayo so after the press the mayo got everywhere and made the sandwich a little messier than I would've preferred. The flavor was standard homemade style sub, it was tasty, and the cold coke helped wash it down. It was nostalgic more than delicious but it did the trick. Englunds is a decent place to get a hero. The subs are always loaded and over loaded with mayo so be careful to ask to go light. The meats and cheeses used are thumanns cold cuts. I wasn't sure how to rate this place because my experience was really odd. It sits in a strip mall that is filled with rundown looking storefronts and that unkept-unclean look carried into this sub shop. This was by far the filthiest restaurant I have ever been into! The floors look like they have never been mopped EVER, the glass on the cold-cut case was covered in fingerprints, that same case was leaking and that liquid was being caught by a pile of mold covered white cloths. There were 2 soft drink coolers that may have had 10 bottles of soda in them combined, and the soda bottles that were in this cooler were missing labels and looked like they had been in the sun for sometime. Just as I turned to walk out the door in horror I caught a glimpse of a sandwich that was being eaten at one of the tables by another patron, it looked delicious. The patron must of recognized the horrified look on my face and he said "it's better than it looks I promise". I asked him what he recommended and he told me always gets a Blockbuster, so against everything sanitary within me, I went ahead and ordered the sandwich. The sandwich turned out to be delicious, it had tons of fresh sliced meat on what seemed to be fresh baked bread. I took my sub back to my office to eat it, I could not bear to eat in the restaurant itself. I was about halfway finished with this gigantic sub when the thought of that floor came back through my mind again, which caused me to throw away more then half of the sandwich. Didn't even want to give one star. Went there based on the reviews. The slob behind the counter I think thought he was being overworked. I wanted the gyro and he told me it would be 45 min since he just had another lady order before me. Oh, okay then. I'll take the Italian. When asked to Iliad the bathroom I was told to go out the back door and use the 3rd bush on the left. Really? You think you're funny? Grabbed me a fountain soda and the ice wouldn't come out of machine. Was told that if there's no ice coming out its out of ice. Really genius? The sub sucked. Bread mediocre. Honestly, I almost walked out but am so glad that I did not. These subs were delicious and I will be back. We ordered four full-size subs; two turkeys, an American and an Italian. Godzilla could not eat one; ordering a half is plenty big. We took them home and sampled each; They were all great. Freshly sliced meats and cheeses and fresh delicious bread. The biggest downside is the place doesn't look clean. I mean, I think it is, it just does not look like it. But once the bad customer service was passed on to me, I will no longer be returning. Inexpensive! What a deal! $8-10 for a sandwich that is probably as big as two Subway foot longs! They're huge! The owner slices all the meat right there. Make sure you request a sauce, I forgot to, and my sandwiches were a little dry. But that's what makes a good fresh sandwich, it's not dripping with sauce unless you want it that way.
