Wish I took more pictures of this fantastic garden. I am ecstatic that my husband and I took the time to walk from our hotel to the English Garden. We brought sandwiches, snacks and water which made for a little picnic. The garden is enormous and beautifully maintained. Wish we had gardens such as this in the USA. I think this may even be bigger than the Central Park in NYC - most certainly safer! We went on a Monday but it was still full of people. From what it seems, it's a favorite among locals and tourists alike. Locals wade into the water and there are even some spots where they surf! I believe there's even a lifeguard in one of the areas. They don't just let anyone surf though and there are some warning signs about its dangers. Hubby and I were able to find a bench in the shade where we just enjoyed the scenery for a while. It was perfect for our jet lag recovery The park is also within walking distance from many other landmarks in Munich, such as The Residence, the Odeonsplatz, Mariensplatz, The Munich Cathedral, among many others. read more

This park is larger than Central Park and is arguably the largest park in Europe. We only spent a few hours with our bikes exploring, but we were thrilled with what we discovered around every turn. There's a beautiful river with plenty of waterfront space to relax and even a place to watch surfers practicing. There's a huge beer garden by the Chinese Tower, great for a break or people watching. There's lots of well maintained pathways for walking snd bikes. Munich residents are lucky to have this space! read more

The beer garden in the English Garden is an expansive and lively spot that's perfect for soaking in the Bavarian experience. The size of the place is almost overwhelming. The Chinese Tower here is very cool and unique. Originally, the pagoda served as a public viewing platform until the surrounding trees grew too tall. We indulged in a classic pretzel and beer, which were both excellent. The real star, however, was the sweet mustard--a must-try that perfectly complements the pretzel. What a glorious park! It has it's cozy parts and it's wide open spaces.....truly something for everyone. I'm glad that our friends J&B recommended we visit, because we had so much fun exploring! It was a rainy day in September when we visited, so the Biergarten by the Chinesischer Turm was closed. We were ok with that, we just walked around the tower and looked at it in amazement. We walked up to the Monopteros, a Greek styled temple, and took many photos of the beautiful landscape in the park. We especially loved watching the surfers. I mean, COME ON! Surfing in September in the heart of Europe? What's not to like? This park is so huge that, had the weather been nicer, we probably would have stayed the entire day and explored every corner of it, because there is so much more to see. From the heart of the park, you can't even tell that you are in such a large city...all the city noises seem to disappear! The English Garden in Munich, Germany, is one of the world's largest urban parks. With plenty to see both inside and out, it's no surprise that this is one of the top 2 ranked attractions on Trip Advisor in all of Munich. My friends and I came here on a Saturday afternoon for a stroll, and while we only saw maybe half of the park, we enjoyed our experience. To begin our exploration, we started to the right of Haus der Kunst, at Eisbachwelle, where you can watch local and professional surfers take turns on an artificial continuous standing wave. The wave is only really suitable for skilled and experienced surfers, as lots of accidents occur here. The surfers we all saw were very impressive, and we thoroughly enjoyed our time watching them. We continued on to the left of the wave and walked around the Japanese tea house. Other attractions we saw included Monopteros and the Chinese Tower. This park is huge, with vast, open grass areas perfect for laying down at. There are a couple beer gardens scattered throughout, with perhaps the most famous one at the English Garden being next to the Chinese tower. We spent about 2.5 hours at this park and felt like that was enough to see all of the main attractions and grab a couple beers. We visited on a cold day, but I could definitely see people spending more than half a day here relaxing. The ambiance is calm and inviting. read more

How can you not love the Englischer Garten? First off, it's the largest park in Germany. It's half again the size of the famous Central Park in New York City. It Gets around 3.5 million visitors a year and I can see why. Bright green for miles, lots of interesting little tidbits and sit down spots along the Isar River. You can't possibly explore the whole thing in one shot but you can definitely hit the high spots including the Japanese Tea House and the Monopteros Dome. Stunning! What's NOT to love about this park in Munich? It's obviously a favorite of the locals, based on how many people were there midweek today. This is a huge place with multiple paved paths throughout. So many green trees ensures shade even on a warm day. There are bathrooms and places to eat as well. One of the highlights is the area where people surf.... in the park. We walked to the Garten from Marienplatz, with the idea to visit the Chinesischer Turm on the other side. It wasn't the best time to visit a park - end of December, temperature near to freezing, rain and wind - but we made the best of it. It was still a lovely visit. There's a river that runs through the greenery, a couple cute pedestrian bridges, lots of walking paths, and the Monopteros in the center of it all. Despite the cold and the rain, we spent a good amount of time in the park. We made a beeline for the Chinese Market, but on our way out, we strolled the paths, visited the Monopteros, took a ton of pictures and took our time leaving. It's tucked behind a quaint neighborhood, with a few small cafes and shops lining the streets on the way in. They also have a fun Biergarten on the way in, with a couple of old ski buggies (is that the right term for it?) offering shelter from the weather. I'd love to go back in another season, to be able to enjoy everything the park has to offer in heat and sunshine. read more

The English Garden is Munich's largest park. I didn't get a chance to explore most of it, but we stopped by the Monopteros and the Chinese Tower Beer Garden. The Monopteros is a round temple and provides a great view. I saw a lot of people hanging out in the grass. We spent most of our time at the beer garden and had some food there. One can spend all day at the garden. read more

4.7 stars for English Garden. We took the U6 to Universitat, and it was just a short 5-10 minute walk over to English Garden. We walked up to Monopteros, which was beautiful in the sunset and gave us an excellent view of the garden. We then made our way over to Chinesischen Turm Restaurant and Biergarten, which offered a variety of food options from pork and pasta to pretzels and of course, HB beer. This is a gigantic garden. We only explored about 1/10th of it, and I already felt like that part we explored was massive. I would definitely recommend grabbing food and beer at Chinesischen Turm and enjoying the serene atmosphere. read more

This is one huge public park. It is about 900 acres. It is separated into 2 sections: the Northern and Southern section. It is separated by the Isarring Road. The Southern section seems to be the most popular and Touristy. It's the section with all the birds. It also has the Chinese Tower, which is the touristy place of them all; 2 beer gardens; the Monopteros; the Surfing area; and many more. During the summer months, which is the time I went, you can see a lot of people walking, jogging, sunbathing, cycling, and enjoying the good weather. The Northern part is more quiet and peaceful. I didn't see many people there. I suggest you go to the Aumeister Beer Garden in the northern tip. It's not as touristy, it's more "German" and they say the food is better. If you want to stay away from the tourists, that is a great, peaceful place to go. I think the locals don't even go to the Chinese Garden Beer Garden, they know to go to the Aumeister. I suggest renting a bike if you want to explore the Englischer Garten. There is no way you're going to see everything on foot. Even with a bike, it took us about 3-4 hours to explore the entire Southern and Northern region of this park. If you want to rent a bike, I recommend MucBike. They speak English, and it's right at the Western entrance at the Southern section of the Garden. If you come to Munich, this is one of the places you have to visit. It's so peaceful. read more

I almost skipped the English Garden... I figured, I'm in Munich - why do I want to spend time walking through an "English" garden? Well, to make it up to the Chinese Christmas Market, I had to walk through the garden, and I'm so glad I did. It's not only an incredibly beautiful place, but you'll also see some cool things. Maybe even surfers riding those small waves in the Isar. Props to the ones who were out while I was there - in December! Stop by Dallmayr in town, pick up some bread, liverwurst, sausage, and cheese, and head to the park to enjoy a nice lunch. After you're done, walk it off by climbing the hill, enjoying the view, and sauntering down the Isar river. It's a great break from the wonderful action of Munich. read more

My first time here in Munich and everyone seems to talk about the English Gardens. Something about it says that I should totally check this place out. So I did, and I experienced what's really good in the neighborhood. I entered the south entrance on the west end. Pretty unassuming, lots of walkers and bikers going through, until a little further down, the clothing optional spot comes around on the left side. Pretty cool,, nudity doesnt bother me at all. Might be to some Americans like the Farmer tourist types that never has any culture whatsoever. Best part is that just a few more steps down is a public beach area. Adults, kids, black, white, Asian,, doesnt matter, they're all just there to enjoy the water and the summer. On the other side of the bridge is the river. Fast moving, but still has people swimming in it. I got as far as the Chinese tower. Had a snack there then went back to my hotel. It was getting late and I wish I had more time to explore the park. Maybe next time I'll rent a bicycle so I can cover more ground a lot quicker. Definitely a must see here in Munich. Thank you so much for reading my review. The reviews don't lie. This is one of the world's best parks, and this is coming from a devout public-park lover. First, it is enormously massive, spanning more space than New York's Central Park. More importantly, it offers tons to do, from miles of hiking/biking trails, to a vast body of water that you either admire or float upon in a rented boat, to horse back riding, to a few fun "monuments." The monopteros is a greek style temple on a small hill overlooking the park. From this vantage point, the majestic church towers of downtown Munich rise above the greenery to say Allo. The centerpiece of the park is the Chinese Tower, which itself is a bit rickety looking, but it is surrounded by picnic tables and food stands offering traditional Bavarian fare, giant pretzels, and beers. A beer garden in a park? Of course, this is Munich, people. It was fun to partake. The northern end of the park also has a nude sunbathing area, though I swear we did not stop by for a view. I swear. The south end has a small enclave where the waterway narrows, creating some quick waves. Surfers line up to take their turn riding the waves, and dozens of onlookers gather around to enjoy from afar. If I lived here, I would surely stop by anytime I wanted some outdoor exercise, to get some reading in, to play catch, or just have a nice time with friends. read more

Locals may not appreciate the comparison, but there were so many times that Munich reminded me of my beloved Portland. And one of jewels in each city's crown is a park. Not just any city park, but a vast expanse with attractions that suit any mood. And a population that appreciates the great outdoors and beer. Clothing optional. The Englisher Garten (English Garden) is one of the largest city parks in the world. There are open fields with streams and bike paths. In some sections the Eisbach (tributary of the Isar River) is tranquil, but in one section there are raging rapids and one of the best pastimes is to watch the surfers. Swimming and surfing are not permitted, but it doesn't appear that the ban is enforced. I spent many evenings walking through the park and one day biking from one end to the other and every time discovered something new. A few of the highlights: -- Chinesischer Turm (Chinese pagoda) with beer garden. A must visit if you're there on the weekend. -- Monopteros hilltop temple. The ceiling is divine. -- Kleinhesseloher Lake with boats and a beer garden -- Sunbathers. Yes, it is rather famous for folks going au natural. Sorry no photos. Even though it was on the chilly side, I really enjoyed visiting the garden. Such a beautiful park! I especially loved watching the people playing with the dogs- most off leash and having so much fun! The employees were packing up the beer garden at the Chinese Pagoda for the winter, so keep that in mind when wanting to visit during the cold months. read more

I will start by saying, try to at least have a grasp of where you are going when trying to find this place and not be like my husband who took us on a journey that ended in miles walked with sore feet lol... This was the very first spot we visited when arriving in Munich. We walked the gardens for what seemed like hours and found a few fun spots where locals seem to go to sunbathe, swim, and picnic. It is so beautiful that it is worth the walking. Note, if you are there during the warm months and if you have children know that you will likely see a lot of naked bodies, all of course in a tasteful European way, just don't be surprised when you turn the corner to a naked man eating an ice cream cone. While there make the journey to the beer garden under the pagoda. The food is in huge portions with the beer following in huge glasses- a great treat after touring around! read more

For whatever reason, I wasn't expecting Englischer Garten to be quite so large. I thought I had visited it years ago on a previous visit to Munich, but I don't think it was the same place. Oh well! It turned out to be an extremely pleasant surprise. I've had a hectic month full of new experiences and learning in a new country, so having the ability to totally decompress while wandering through nature [in a big city] was the PERFECT Saturday morning activity. I really loved these gardens. There was a creek running through, beautiful waterfalls, plenty of woodlands and open fields, a Chinese structure, AND a beer garden. What the what? How cool is that? A glorious park in the center of one of Europe's most beautiful cities. I love the Englischer Garten. There's something for everyone - benches for sitting and watching the world go by, big lawns for lounging and lots of trails for walking and jogging. Now - you might be saing "so what? Central Pak in NY has that". Well - the Englischer Garten also has urban surfing in the river (amazing to watch) and THREE Biergartens including the legendary Chinescher Tor. We visited on the first sunny, warm Sunday of spring and joined what felt like all of Munich in strolling through the park, watching the surfers perfect new tricks and winding up at the biergarten for a cold bier and to listen to the brass band. The Englischer Garten is just one of the many, many reasons that I love Munich! read more

I needed a little throw back down memory lane to revisit this fairytale of this place to escape reality for just a second and say how incredibly amazing the Englischer Garten is. My friend I spent a day here a couple of months ago when we were visiting Munich, and coming across this little (massive understatement of the magnitude of this place) gem was like being transported into another world. The park is right next to a university, so you see a ton of students here. It's a beautifully maintained (German efficiency for you) and this massive park is like a an adult playground. Whether you're surfing in the river (yes, you can do that), drinking a pint one of their three beer gardens (I chose the pagoda), eating a picnic in the grass, or biking through this monstrosity, it's a truly unique experience. I was fortunate enough to be able to do it all, sans the surfing since my skills were not quite up to par, and it was a magical little day adventure I won't forget. So although sadly I cannot go back and sip my pint of Franziskaner (for now) I will relish in the memories. read more

So many reviews, and still a 5-star rating. Does this park/garden deserve it? The answer is a resounding yes. If you are in Munich, go here. I don't care what are your interests, this place is at least worth 15 minutes, but one who loves nature and parks could spend half a day here, or more! One of the first things you have to know is that unlike a small town common, this park is really big. I think it is at the very least a mile in length. Kind of like Central Park in NYC. Maybe I have seen enough of Central Park, but here is my impression of the comparison. In NYC while you get some peace and quiet, you still see a lot of city all around. Here, it is like walking through a forest, and Munich isn't all around. There are some areas that are more thickly wooded, and some that are really wide open spaces. When I say big, I mean larger that'll a football field big (I think). No museum here, as far as I know, there is, however, a beer garden. There is so water in this park. Unlike Central, it is not gated off, it is much closer. People sometimes even surf there somewhere. But if I were to speak for me personally, this place is terrific for bike rides. The way the park is set up, you will rarely ever have the same ride. Make turns randomly. And every ride is a new adventure. Just be careful of the many ducks, ducklings (first time seeing) and other animals. I also lied. The park deserves 6 stars. read more
