VMFA Studio School - Stained glass class

The VMFA Studio School offers a variety of great art classes. Members of the VMFA get priority on…read moreclass sign-up. ***LOCATION*** Right across from the VMFA on Grove Ave, not too far from the sculpture garden. It's located in an old Victorian building which can be a little cold during winter months. It took me a second to find, but they have a sign for the studio school. Follow that for the parking lot right in front of the school. ***EXPERIENCE*** I took a stained glass class here and adored it. It was a sold out class that had a very long waiting list. I was grateful to be a member and to be able to sign up early. It was a two day class that lasted from 10am-4:30pm. The only reason this spot loses a star for me is because the class was advertised for one weekend and they changed it without notifying me until the last second. Had my friend taking the class with me not notified me of the email she got (which I didn't), I would've missed this. I had purchased this class about three months in advance and made plans for the weekend they rescheduled it for and had to do a lot of scrambling/canceling to change my weekend plans I had also made months in advance. Our class was led by Jude Schlotzhauer who was very knowledgeable about stained glass and the techniques of making it. I love the way she taught the class. She explained everything to us, had us test out glass cutting techniques, pick out an outline we liked, cut out glass for that, wrap the edges in foil, and flux and solder the pieces together. It was so much fun. She even gave us a sheet with places to get the supplies if we wanted to continue making stained glass. ***PRICE*** As a member, this class was $160. ***BATHROOM*** There are single all gender bathrooms scattered around the building. ***CONCLUSION*** After this class, I want to make stained glass pieces all the time. I had an absolute blast. My friend and I can't stop daydreaming about making more together.

Bought lessons for my nieces and nephews and they really enjoyed the classes. I might try some…read moremyself.

This place was never what it was advertised, they have cameras in the front and when you ask to see the video it's not recorded, the charge you and say the new price is because they are doing more with the kids as they get older but all i ever saw was the kids watching tv on a computer screen. They staff isn't really trained to handle kids and are frustrated and my son started saying the teachers are mean and yell at them. My son is head strong yes, but not destructive, unless being provoked, i ended up pulling my son due to the fact that i asked what happened during a meltdown and got 3 different stories. My kid even said he got sent to the office for not sleeping on the floor when everyone else got a cot to sleep on. Unacceptable, this place is bad

My child attended this facility for a little over 2 months. The center its self is bright,…read morebeautiful & very kid friendly, very much so up to date! The coordinator was very nice. However, EVERY single morning when I would drop my child off, kids were always screaming. Im not speaking on crying, I mean really screaming, which of course made others cry. Same exact thing when I would pick my child up, unless they were in the play room with the ball pit. I had spoken with 3 different teachers about the constant screaming (it was bothering my kid) and they all mentioned that several of the children in the class room has special needs, which is totally fine with me. However, they did nothing to redirect these poor children, the teacheres on a regular basis seemed very frustrated, along with many of the students. I wish they would have maybe found a way to comfort these kids during their moments, instead of just letting them scream, scare other children, and make them cry. This place has so much potential, but it is totally out of control and needs major learning & knowledge on handling children. I told the teacher I was going to be removing my child because it was just not a good fit, and asked what I needed to do. She let me know she would handle it. I then received an email from a worker almost 2 months later asking if my child was okay. I said yes, I removed my child almost 8 weeks ago, and somehow she did not know, which was very strange to me. I hope that more training & guidance is provided for the teachers to help the children they watch.
