In the delightful, must-visit, riverside Ontario down of Kingston is, of all things, a delightful, must-visit steam locomotive. Officially named Engine 1095, it's more commonly referred to by the locals as "The Spirit of Sir John A."
More than 100 years old (and in most recent decades residing as a photo op near Confederation Park), current visitors are quite lucky: This gem of the Canadian Pacific Railroad received a total refurbishment in time for its 100th birthday in 2013. It has an apropos location right next to the Kingston Visitor's Center -- once the century-long home of the K&P Railway station and the Canadian Locomotive Company.
What it comes down to is it's a beautiful thing to see: Jet black, red trim on its windows, white trim on its wheels. Its tender/coal-car and main cab look brand-new; its cylinders, pistons, coupling rods, valve gears, boiler, and other parts shine.
While there's a nice display explaining it's history, I wish they had a regular schedule of opportunities to hear the toot-toot and see the billows of steam arise from the chimney.
Most people come through Kingston to hop on one of the many 1000 Island cruises. I say to don't forget to stop and see an important part of Canada's steam locomotive history. read more
