For those into fashion, you probably know that Japan is a pretty big source for awesome clothes. It is a paradise for denim-heads, avante gardists, Americana lovers and punk rockers alike, and the weakening of the Yen has only made it more tempting to shop on the Japanese market through rakuten or auctions.yahoo.jp. Unfortunately, anyone who does take the dip will have to suffer through the mess that is EMS. For a service called Express Mail Service, the whole thing is decidedly inexpedient. Sure, the item arrives on our shores quickly, but if the item has any value, it gets stuck in customs for what seems like an eternity. You have to go to the EMS office itself, line up for hours, have your item assessed, then pay customs + VAT before finally getting your item. That seems like the usual process, but the fact that the EMS center is near the airport makes it such a chore to go to. Expect your purchases to suffer close to 50% in taxes, and it suddenly makes a little less sense to buy.
