What a great place. Got take-away and it was fantastic. Sailed into Kirkwall after a long day on lively seas from Scrabster and wanted something warm that the crew didn't have to make themselves. Nice walk from the marina. The menu was extensive and had everything you'd hope for, and myself being a vegetarian I was assured that bean curd/tofu could be added to most things. Do yourself a favor and get the bean curd appetizer (we got two, it was amazing). We took our order back to the boat and had a feast. So good, amazing smells, so fresh and tasted great. Some of the things we got... Sweet and sour chicken (battered) Plain chow mein Veg chow mein Veg spring rolls Prawns with water chestnut and bamboo shoots Kung pao with Prawn Szechuan veg with bean curd added (very spicy, be careful!) Very thankful for this food after a long day:) read more

Tasty food, and quite a bit of it! Warm and friendly staff, good drinks! Might just come back for the buffet.

We popped into Empire for a change of pace from sea food (fish and chips) or beef so prevalent in Scotland. We picky about Chinese food due to the place near our home in Minneapolis (Legendary Spice), but I digress. It smelled like good Chinese food when we walked in, though not in an over-powering-our-ventilation-is-substandard way. The decor was much less Chinese-restauranty than many of its siblings in the U.S. and more comfortable chairs than many restaurants in Scotland. The menu has many of the standards you would expect, with the noticeable absence of tofu or mock duck. Both our dishes, my roast pork Szechuan style, and her crispy shredded beef came in a sort of sweet and our sauce, which I normally don't care for, but was pretty tasty, if not very spicy. If you like it spice, maybe make a point of it. Both dishes relied on onions more that I care for. The fried rice was fine, just rice fried lightly with egg, nothing else, and not very greasy. The best dish was the side of bean sprouts, crisp, flavorful, but if ordered again, I would hold the onions. Chinese tea was piping hot. Big portions. Could have shared one dish and one side. And did I mention they were fast? Lightning fast service and food prep. A good change of pace. Exercise a little assertiveness, and I don't think you'll be disappointed. read more

I have been to the Empire several times and have very mixed feelings about it - hence the 2 star review. I've been there when the food has been great - tasty and well cooked. I've also been there when things have been half cold and we were presented with a completely incorrect bill (overcharged of course, not undercharged!) which took a lot of arguing before they would admit to their mistake. The buffet is pretty good. The ambience is OK, but it's better being there with a larger group, I certainly wouldn't go there for a romantic dinner for 2. The takeaway is usually reasonable. Generally - hit or miss. So you take your chances and cross your fingers And it is better than the other Chinese restaurant in Orkney. read more
