I read about this place before we left so I knew to sign up and pay the membership before we got there. When you show up you show your ID and wa la they let you in. Our first impression WOW! It was right out of a book or movie. Plush and stately. But the staff/dealers were so nice and welcoming. We sat at a blackjack table for a few hours. It does surprise because it's easily the best venue to watch sports or play any of those casino inspired games (you can tell I just watch). I wandered down this lane, which sounds pretty bad but I have probably an unhealthy fascination with taking the road less traveled which can lead to dangerous situations such as when the homeless guy at the back of the lane jumped up like a jack in the box shouting. My friend and I were admiring the building and that it even existed when one of the staff came out and invited us in. It was a really cold day in January, he offered us free coffee and walked us through what they do there. It's so plush in there and there is a carvery type area that had nice pub grub fare. Loads of screens, I told him that I am a Saints fan and he said that they play all the NFL games and basically any sporting game you can think of. It's membership only and the website explains more. But I think it's about 25 euro for the year. Over 21s only and it's open from 6pm to 6am. I promise to join and do a revised review of what it's like at 4am in the morning ;) But after the tour and the great hospitality I'm pretty sure that it's one of the leaders in that area.

It was a bit out of our way from where we had our dinner, but I had a blast when I was there. I had played Black Jack before on the internet but just as a spare time kinda thing, so did not know much about the rules or how to best play the game. Luckily one of my coworkers had loved Casino's when she had lived in the states so she had gotten a good grip on how to play the game. So she and the dealer started teaching all of us how to play black jack. I would not say I was a great success but I did go home with 2 Euro's of winnings. The people there are hardcore gamlers, a bit agressive but the staff is very welcoming and do not mind helping you out finding the right table to start off with. We wanted as low a bid as possible to start off with but the 3 Euro table was full. When they then saw that we were quite a lot of people wanting to play the 3 Euro table they opened another table for us with one of their more experienced dealers. The drinks are free but they do not serve alcohol. To some extend I sort of understand why, it seems to be a very professional place and knowing the Irish, mixing it with alcohol might not be the best idea for this kind of place. Regardless of outcome, you forget your losses or accept your winnings and walk. It'll inform everything for the rest of your night. The risk is your night especially if, like me, you rarely have the worth of two €50 notes to your name at any one time. But the potential return, well, that's what gambling's all about isn't it?

They're waiting for you to put in all your money so they can swoop in afterwards and collect your reward. Another word of caution for the Dr. Quirkey's newbie: there are some rough people that hang out here. Because it's located on the top of O'Connell Street, you get a lot of bratty little kids that are bored and looking to rattle some cages. This place is good for a cheap thrill or if you need to kill time before you catch your bus out of town.

It is in a convenient location nearby many tourist attractions, such as Temple Bar, Dublin's castle, St Patrick's Cathedral, etc. it was also a short walking distance to our car rental pick up at St Stephen's Green shopping centre. We booked this hotel for the first day of our trip. We arrived in the morning so our room wasn't ready for check in yet, but we were able to drop off our luggage in the lobby. This made it easy for us as we could continue exploring according to our plan (we took a 30 minute train ride over to Howth right after dropping our bags). Coming back to the hotel around 5pm, our room was ready and we were able to nap a bit before dinner. The superior room we booked was located in a renovated section of the hotel and had access to a shared outdoor patio right across from our hotel room. We didn't have time to use the patio but it was spacious and it seemed no one was using it whenever we passed by. Our hotel room was very clean, large (great for us as we had plenty of luggage) and we had two complementary water bottles in the room. We had breakfast the next morning and it was buffet style. There is a section if you want fresh made omelettes. Lots of variety I think but I stuck with the classic Irish breakfast items. So delicious and fresh! Check out process - we had a bit of a hiccup as I had given my credit card for authorization for breakfast charges when I checked in. The staff was asking for my credit card again which confused me as I had already paid. Despite the confusion, the service at Radisson was great and I would definitely recommend this hotel for fellow tourists!

They also supply complimentary beverages like beers or soda, with some refreshments and snacks in the back. Plenty of security cameras inside, and dealers are rotated every hour, which is great. I was definitely glad I found this place early; I finished first the first time I went (and chopped it with two others since it was pushing 3AM), and came back 2-3 more times in the same week. Friendly dealer staff, good management, and the players are so-so - you get a mix of locals, old people, college kids, young professionals and that's mostly it. As the expression goes, the house always wins. I've been to a number of different betting shops in my time and this specific Ladbrokes did not stand out from the rest. It was awfully depressing inside. A bunch of men stood around with their eyes glued to the one wall with all the TV screens. Gambling on horses or dogs is usually a solitary activity so there was an uncomfortable silence in the room. During the race, you could cut the tension with a knife. Some of people were groaning while others were yelping. Little betting slips were littered all over the floor and tables so I guess there were a lot of losers that day. I don't think highly of gambling but I suppose that if you had to place a bet this place will do.
