    Empire Beauty School

I scheduled an in-person tour of the facility over the phone. The receptionist had a really good energy about them and was very considerate of my needs. I had arrived at my appointment during rush hour so it was pretty busy. I wasn't bothered at all I was amazed at how happy everyone looked it was pure joy. Not one station looked the same each professional had their style and expertise. I had the pleasure of meeting professionals who shared with me why they chose Empire. Their stories empowered me and gave me the clarity that I was looking for. It was my lucky day because I got to meet Miss Stephanie. She taught me the history of the Empire which has been around for 80+ years. The visual aids made learning easier for me and she did me great service by introducing opportunities under the Cosmetology Umbrella . I have toured a few other Beauty Schools but their curriculum doesn't compare to Empire's. The goal of every Empire Beauty School employee is to support students through every phase of their education, graduation, and career placement. I believe that Empire is living in its truth just as it did back in 1934. I want to send a huge shout-out to Empire Beauty for providing the opportunity for me. It's safe to say Empire is the school for me.

My overall rating is a combination of the school and the student. I had very minimal wait time when I arrived 5 minutes prior to my appointment time. After a brief consultation, she wasn't sure about the best way to cut my hair: wet vs dry, layered vs straight across, so she asked the instructor for input. The instructor responded to my inquiry very nicely and shared how best to do the cut (we went with wet). Next, we headed to the shampoo bowl where I waited in queue for my turn (2 heads ahead of me). My turn. The wash was ok - I would've liked more of a massage, more pressure, but I didn't know what the students were instructed so I let it be. Back to the chair for a cut. My student stylist (S. Claiborne) did a great job on my long layered cut! She took her time and ensured it was what I wanted, what her eyes liked, what looked good through the mirror and asked the instructor to check it a few times. The instructor checked the student's work throughout the cut, ensuring her that she was doing a great job and commending her on being precise and communicating with me - which I could tell boosted the student's confidence! The blowdry was quick and easy and I left with really bouncy, flowy hair. And hellooo - it was $9!!

I decided to go with a Wash, blow dry and thermal which only costed $10 in the end (cannot beat that).

I went in for a pixie cut and provided a clear reference photo. The student stylist consulted with her instructor, Ms. Kim, who approved the style and directed the process. At that time, my hair was shoulder length. After washing my hair, Ms. Kim immediately began cutting in a rushed and uneven manner before allowing the student to continue under her supervision. At no point was I properly advised that my natural hair texture would require a relaxer in order to achieve the style I requested. That critical information should have been disclosed during the consultation--before any cutting began, not after my hair was already significantly altered. Throughout the appointment, multiple instructors were involved, including Ms. Shirley, and the process became inconsistent and poorly coordinated. My hair was molded, dried for over an hour, and further manipulated with products and clippers in the back. Despite spending over 5 hours in the chair, the final result did not resemble the style I requested in any way. What is most concerning is the lack of professional communication and oversight between instructors. Decisions were made on my hair without clear explanation, proper expectation-setting, or consideration of the outcome being delivered to the client. After the service, I was told I should return in 48 hours for a relaxer. That recommendation should have been discussed before any cutting occurred--not after my hair was already compromised. Due to my dissatisfaction, I escalated the matter and emailed the President of the school. I was informed that someone would follow up with me, however I have not yet received any response. In the days following my appointment, I continue to notice more clearly how uneven and poorly executed the cut was, particularly from the initial work performed by Ms. Kim. My hair is left in a condition that is extremely disappointing and difficult to correct. While I understand this is a training environment, clients still deserve proper consultation, informed consent before major changes are made, and consistent supervision that prevents outcomes like this. Unfortunately, that standard was not met in my experience.

So I was really excited when I found this sewing lesson shop. It was $125 for three classes. I took Monday evening classes that were meant to be slotted for 2 hours, but our sweet teacher would go earlier and stay later to let us finish the projects. Do know that this is not a true beginner class. I wish they noted that you want to take machine fundamentals before, but as a beginner I was lost a lot of the time. Our class felt like it had way too many students at times, because our teacher took a 1:1 approach and sometimes you'd be waiting for her help for a while. This does not affect my review, but our poor teacher got sick before the second class, so there was a lot of rescheduling. She did her absolute best to accommodate us which was really kind. I wish in the Level 1 we got an overall explanation of how to do things so we weren't left lost and waiting for our teacher to help us. Do know that a good amount of the tools here are well loved. On my second class, I ended up at two broken machines and wasn't able to finish my project that night. Thankfully the teacher let me come early the third class to finish it. Each class you create a new project. We made a tote bag, a zipper pouch, and a little bucket kitchen bag. I think if I went in knowing more about the machine I would've had a better experience. If you're a true beginner, be sure to take fundamentals beforehand or learn machine basics first.
