In this day of iphone and digital technology, there really isn't much reason to have to go to…read moresomewhere like Fotomax any more- photos are rarely printed out anyways. To think of the last time I actually had to go and run my photos, I think it must have been something 10 or more years ago. Back then even though I had the short lived APS camera, you still needed somewhere/someone to actually print the photos out. With the advent of facbook, iphones and professionals turning to digital cameras, I thought that most of these photo printers would be out of business by now. their numbers have certainly dwindled compared to the old days when they were everywhere and you always had to wait for ages for your photos to be done. I recently had to update my passport and found that there is still a reason for these shops to carry on- passports do not accept digital photographs. I found myself running around like headless chicken for somewhere quick passport photos and I came across this place. They were cheaper than you would get at photo booths and the fact is more care is taken as opposed to the booth where you are your own photographer. To keep up with the times though, they have expanded what they sell here- accecories for digital cameras, service to burn photos and data onto CDs, small electronics on sale at cheap prices. For the time being they may still survive but come the day when digital photos are accepted everywhere I would presume they will die off as well. It is only the enthusiast who print their photos now and I suspect that number will fall eventually as well.

Thank you Jamie for beautiful photographs of our new family! Our baby was born 1 week late but…read moreJamie was able to accommodate for his late arrival. I really love his style of photography. His is not the "pose and shoot" type as he really captures the essence of/and the moment. You will not be getting your "high school dance" type photos. We opted for the mini photo session. I was a bit nervous - as a new mom, I'm still learning about my baby boy so I didn't know what his mood would be for the photo session. Needless to say, he was crying up a storm! LOL. But within this chaos of screams, when there were patches of quiet moments, Jamie was able to catch some beautiful moments. I didn't mind the occasional "crying" picture - I found it to be real and authentic. I loved it! The session took place in our home. I was also worried about this as my home in HK isn't big. BUT, he was able to use the space and make it work! I'm actually not sure if he has his own studio. But, in any case, I wouldn't want "Studio type" photos anyway. His photos are more like a "story" with warm, fuzzy feelings. Anyway, the session was smooth, Jaime was patient as I was trying to keep my baby calm, and we got great family memories. Thank You Jaime!

A group of friends and I (five of us in total) went to Life Memory Icon for a photo shoot after…read moreseeing an attractive deal on Groupon for it. We had seen many similar photo shoot offers on Groupon before, but this was the first we had seen that was located in Causeway Bay instead of somewhere in Kowloon, which was more convenient for most of us and was the main deciding factor for us in purchasing the deal. Overall, we enjoyed the photo shoot and were able to leave with some pretty good pictures. The building that Life Memory Icon is in is towards the end of Lockhart Road (kind of at the point where Wan Chai becomes Causeway Bay), and the studio is at the penthouse floor of the building. The service at Life Memory Icon was very good and the staff were patient with us - we actually arrived about five minutes late, and had to wait around for ten more minutes for our last friend to arrive. The staff told us it was fine and that there was no rush, and that we will just begin when everyone has arrived and changed. The photographer was very skilled and gave us many ideas for poses, and was patient with us too. We had brought three sets of clothes to change into and the photographer gave us sufficient time to change. The center had many props and backgrounds for us to photograph with as well. My only complaint was that of the over hundred photos that we took, we were only allowed to choose 25 photos of the bunch to keep. If we wanted more, we had to pay extra, which is just an obvious money-making tactic. Also, they informed us that we can only come back to review and collect our photos after three weeks. This is a pretty long wait considering that it's just photo files being retouched and transferred to a file, and it meant that one of our friends who was going to be in the UK by then wouldn't be able to review the photos with us. Though we initially thought 25 photos was very little, we actually didn't have a hard time narrowing down the photos as we were pretty picky with our shots. Still, I do wish that they would increase the limit as I can imagine that other people who come here would have trouble choosing.

The processing services here for professional rolls leave much to be desired. I came in with a…read moreKodak 400 TX roll and they not only couldn't process on site, but also claimed it would take a month to digitize the proofs in Cd format. However Fotomax is designed more for tweeny Polaroid services so my complaint is an edge case. The self service machines are great if you bring your own storage device and the interface is easy enough to understand if you can't read Chinese characters (like myself). The prints also turned out well and are far cheaper than getting them developed in the states.

If you ever have the need for a photographer, I would thoroughly recommend Joyce Yung. She is a…read morereally talented photographer, who follows a brief well, and produces lovely results. She is also reasonably priced, certainly for personal events like weddings, family events, etc. I recently used her for a personal event, and briefed her that I wanted candid shots, and not posed photographs. I was not disappointed with what I got. When you hire Joyce, it's often not just her. She will (depending on the size of the event) come with a small crew, usually a second photographer, and a runner. This means you will get great coverage. Even though there maybe a few extra bodies around, I was surprised how little I saw of Joyce at the event, and I don't mean this in a bad way. She and her team were so discreet, they just seemed to blend in the background, and glide effortlessly around the attendees. The only way I knew they were there was by the clicking of the shutter, and the final result. The delivery of her final shots was great. Whilst not particularly speedy after the event, it did take a few weeks due to the sheer amount of editing down that needed to be done, she delivered online, USB, and hard prints of the final selection, which still totalled around 700 shots. As mentioned, the coverage was excellent. Joyce also does a lot of different styles of photography, so take a moment to check out her website.
