Eventually, due to the level of my injuries I was transported to their new Duluth hospital (WOW) and was met with equally fine care for the 9 days spent there. In both places they were most comforting and efficient. I must also reach out to the Virginia team members (you know who you are) that had learned of my being in their Virginia facility and took time from their schedules to visit and comfort me . I had my experience here when I went in for a little accident I had…read more So I had a cut on my head, and I had called the hospital because it was about a 25 minute ride away from where I was staying. They suggest I make an appointment then I came in. It was suggest by the people I was with that I should just go to the emergency room there. So I did. The weird thing is, they seemed generally annoyed that I didnt stick to my appointment and that I came into the emergency room. Either way... Since my head injury had actually happened the night before I wasn't sure what they were going to do. I did not expect them to ask my advice though! The nurse that was taking care of me had asked what I wanted to do - if I wanted her to cut my head (which was now healing) open and have her sew it up.. I told her no.. So she cleaned it up, and told me to leave. I could have done that! Seriously.. and I had done that, several times!!! But, since this is the only hospital in the area, it looks like there is no choice but to go here. Or be careful and don't get hurt.

Of course even before Pipers arrival Cassie and I both had to bring our older kids here when needed. When first arrive, it's very bright and elegant inside. At this time everyone staff and patients are wearing masks due to the Covid procedures CDC still has set in place. I'm hoping in the fire these will go away because it's just not the same on how things used to be. You almost forget faces and names because of the masks. But besides that, the professionalism is still there, the staff who greet you and take you to the room, the staff who come in and start measurements and weigh you in, and then finally your doctor who comes and makes sure things are going ok with growth and health. It truly is a great experience. Piper hasn't had a bad experience with doctors or nurses this far, but after her shots she had to take today she may be sharing a different opinion. I am happy to report that Piper is looking great for both growth and health and look forward to coming back for her 4 month, appointment. The new Staff and Providers really make you feel welcome and take the time to listen to you. There is a new Man there I can't think of his name but he walks around and says hello to you in the lobby as he passes by he appears to have a good relationship with the staff the all speak very highly of him and offer the ability to talk with him if there is an issue. We have been in Hibbing for many years and with Essentia for all of them, I have really noticed the difference since the summer of 2019.

The schedulers and (some of the receptionists) are the rudest, most impatient and terrible people…read morefor the job. I have rarely ever had a pleasant experience with any of them. I dread checking out and having to schedule a follow up appointment because I know they are going to be rude and snappy as if I'm wasting their time. They always make you feel unwelcome - I can't think of many times I've had an interaction with one of them that they haven't snapped at me. I actually put off and avoid calling to make appointments - I use MyHealth whenever possible for scheduling because they are so freaking rude and mean. Today my roommate had an appointment that was apparently canceled and he wasn't notified. Well, the lady, of course, started snapping and getting this unwarranted attitude; so much so that he left without making another appointment. If my wonderful family doctor who I've seen all my life wasn't at Essentia in Hibbing, there's no way I would ever go there. They just ruin your day. As if going to the clinic wasn't crappy enough already!

After discharge, security immediately asked me to leave the hospital. This hospital is NOT one you want to come to for care of a SERIOUS condition or otherwise. And make sure you have a ride for when you're discharged because they aren't any help with you getting home. That's why security asked me to leave because I had no ride and they didn't want me in the waiting room waiting. Horrible experience here.

The emergency room physician Dr.Olsen neglected to treat a young man who presented to this…read moreemergency room early one morning after suffering head trauma. The man was acting confused and belligerent and was written off as intoxicated- neither lab work or breathalyzer done to confirm. He sat there for four hours vomiting and confused- and was set to DISCHARGE HOME- until a new nurse on the next shift went in and assessed the man and told the doctor he needed evaluation. At that point his blood alcohol was below the legal limit at 0.05. A CT scan showed a significant head bleed and skull fracture. Had this nurse not intervened, this man would've been sent home by this ER doctor, and ultimately would have died. I know what standard of care is, and this isn't it. This doctor took an oath to help people without prejudice. This doctor had failed to treat another young man in serious condition at the Cloquet hospital (I encourage those to look this up with this doctors name and this hospital, it was in the Duluth News Tribune) and legal action was sought out for justice of his negligence. This is not someone you want working in your community ER, somewhere where you should feel safe receiving care when you need it the most. I want to thank the nurse that spoke up and saved this man's life.
