Trinity Lutheran Church - Stained glass above the altar

Trinity Lutheran Church

Such a welcoming congregation!…read more Trinity Lutheran Church is a historic Lutheran church. It was built in 1914, and is a one-story, granite Late Gothic Revival style cruciform plan church building. The building replaced a wood frame church built in 1889 that was destroyed by fire in 1913 (after being struck by lightning). It features 16 granite and limestone buttresses and distinctive custom limestone arched door and windows. Thanks to the hard work of "Miss" Pat Holman and others, it was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 2008. From the 2007 nomination form: " Trinity Lutheran Church is significant for its architecture and as an excellent example of the ecclesiastical architecture of J. Carroll Johnson, well-known early twentieth century Columbia architect of the firm of Urquhart & Johnson. The church, constructed in 1914 in the shape of a cross, is made of blue granite which was mined in Winnsboro, South Carolina. This excellent example of Gothic Revival parish church architecture has distinctive exterior and interior features, and a sophistication not often exhibited in rural farming communities of South Carolina. Laid in random courses, its walls feature sixteen granite and limestone buttresses, granite and cast stone parapets rising two feet above the gabled slate roof, contrasting mortar, and distinctive custom limestone arched door and window surrounds. Broad wooden eaves extend well beyond the walls and feature fascia boards and open rafter tails. Trinity Lutheran Church's edifice and interior are rich in symbolism, as attested to by the eighteen stained glass windows. These windows were installed in 1952 and are the symbols of important events portrayed in the Bible. The largest stained glass window in the sanctuary is located on the southwest elevation wall and covers half of the space of the wall. It is framed by a flamboyant Gothic arch. A heavy pine-beamed, bracketed truss system supports the roof and adorns the sanctuary's and transepts' ceilings. Two noncontributing buildings are also on the property, a parish building, built sixty years after the construction of the church, and an addition to the parish building added in 1994." Listed in the National Register August 1, 2008. Photos from application materials.

They offer this "VIP Experience" for first time visitors where you truly feel like they are happy you have chosen to attend. We were walked through the children's area where we checked in our daughter. What I loved initially was that there is a system in place to ensure no one can just come in and take a child without having a numbered pass that matches the name tag given to the parent. They went a step further and provided my child with a name tag showing the other kids that it was her first time so that she could feel welcomed and truly have a great first time visit. The service was absolutely great and the pastors sense of humor and incorporation of jokes was a breath of fresh air compared to more traditional churches I have attended in the past; not to mention the worship band was absolutely amazing! At the end of the services, we all received a welcome gift, to include one for my child and we were introduced to the campus pastor and his wife. You can tell that this is such a loving environment to be a part of and it just may very well become our home church

We are trying to find our home church where we can raise our family and grow in our walk with Jesus and God but we did not feel very welcomed overall. We were not introduced to any of the pastors and in all we only spoke to one person. We thought it would be a bit different. Me, being retired Air Force, and my wife, growing up on Army bases in her youth, have attended churches on many military installations and are used to the camaraderie and welcoming demeanor of the people who attend. My wife and I have also attended Korean-American churches where everyone wants to meet you and the pastors are always the first to greet you and assist you. The military churches are quite transient though and our home church dissolved hence the search for a new permanent church. I'm sure we must've just picked an off day to go. Hopefully as we search for our new church home we will find that welcoming family. The one person we did meet and talk with was very sweet and we appreciated that.

Great worship, and I truly feel the spirit of God is there. Pastor Jason is anointed and has a gift of understanding and teaching the word of God. He's not afraid to talk about the hard topics and what's going on in our world. I can tell he really loves the word of God and is passionate about preaching to his church. I'm hopeful it may become my home church soon.

Not great things about Faith Church- 1) the gospel is secondary to 'the series' to be preached. The Word is watered down rather than speaking for itself. So much so that I have decided to go elsewhere. I don't go to church to 'eat donuts and have my ears tickled' - I go to worship and LEARN the Holy Word of God. I sat for 45 minutes very recently, not hearing a single word of Scripture. I longed to be wrong- I absolutely ached to stay and find some small reason to be completely mistaken, but the Holy Spirit will lead me elsewhere. I spoke with a handful of people in the lobby, wanting desperately to remain with these beautiful people on this beautiful campus, but they didn't seem to even notice that the Word hadn't even been spoken. Not a single verse. I prayed together with them all and left. The world is a challenging place, and the Scripture and the Gospel our hope and anchor. Everything else is just a clanging cymbal. It breaks my heart, but if you want to grow in the grace and knowledge of our Lord Jesus Christ look elsewhere.
