Avoid at all costs! You don't want to see someone who exhibits so many red flags in one person. TLDR: The Doctor got hostile and bitter after I decided not to make an appointment, and texted me messages after I'd blocked his office number. I called Dr. Ostro's office to ask about his experience diagnosing and treating Ernest Syndrome and to confirm his consultation fee, since I am paying out of pocket. A man answered the phone -- I initially assumed he was a staff member, but he later identified himself as Dr. Ostro. During the call, I had to spell the name of the condition twice(RED FLAG!). If I knew he was the doctor himself right then and there, I'd end the call, but I only realized it later. The "associate" started asking me questions about my symptoms shortly after, and he said that I could have Eagle Syndrome because Ernest and Eagle Syndromes are often used interchangeably(RED FLAG! - only someone who has never heard about Ernest S. and doesn't understand the difference between them would confuse the two). I told him that my ENT already saw my neck CT scan and ruled it out, and my TMJs are healthy according to my imaging and my orofacial doctor. I then asked him who he was, and he told me he's Dr. Ostro himself. I immediately became suspicious of this doctor. After all, if he was capable of treating Ernest Syndrome, he wouldn't need me to spell its name twice. I bet he was googling its name at the time. Anyway, I decided to test his knowledge and asked him how he'd diagnose it, giving him a last chance to prove himself. He told me that I'd need a panoramic and CT scans(another giant RED FLAG!). He started getting impatient and asked me when I'd like to see him. I said that I needed time to consider. He got aggressive, saying that I wasted his time by getting him to answer my questions for free (while I didn't even know who he was for most of the convo). His pathetic outburst got me very annoyed, and I told him that I would never make an appointment with someone who doesn't even know that you need a diagnostic injection to diagnose Ernest Syndrome. He got furious, repeating his previous accusation that I used him to get answers to my questions and told me to never call his number again. I didn't listen to his rant and hung up. Here is when things got both funny and creepy. He wrote me an angry message from his cell, lol, after being unable to call me from his office phone because of my blocking. I blocked his cell phone as well, and then he probably ran out of devices to text me from. Well, at least I got a laugh out of his childish attempts to have the last word. But many would find such unprofessional behavior very uncomfortable(some might consider this a red flag as well). UNPROFESSIONAL and CARELESS: Dr Ostro left two stitches in my month, I felt uncomfortable, went back to the office asking for a checkup, he claimed everything was fine and sent me home and saying it could be my illusion. After going back home still feeling uncomfortable, my friend helped, and pulled out the stitch using her hand. After that, I wrote review on zocdoc stating the situation, he never apologized but told me he was unhappy about the review. He asked me to remove the zocdoc review in exchange for $1000 discount, I refused and stand by every word I wrote. 2.ONLY CARE ABOUT MONEY: never inform me they are out-of-network: I went there knowing he is in network with my dental plan, but he said my procedure would be medical not dental. Never disclosed he is out of network with my medical insurance. When I went over my plan: deductibles and copay with the office, they tricked me into believing they are in-network and asked me to pay in-network deductibles. 3.CRAZY BILLING: I went there for a simple mucocele removal, I pulled the average cost for the same procedure at zipcode 10019, the average cost is ~$300, highest is $950. Guess how much he asked? 3200!!!!! That's 10 TIMES HIGHER than average cost from BCBS cost estimator. Also I don't need a tooth xray, but he asked me to do one without even knowing what my problem is. I am a huge baby when it comes to the dentist, but my visit to Dr. Ostrow's office yesterday afternoon for wisdom teeth consultation was actually kind of pleasant. I found Dr. Ostrow listed through my insurance {DeltaCare USA} and he was one of several that I called. All the other oral surgeons required a $150+ consultation fee. The office manager I spoke us was lovely and very knowledgeable {believe me, not all of them are this way}! She let me know that the office doesn't accept my insurance, but if I get a DeltaCare referral from my regular dentist, the consultation will be free. So, I made sure that they received the referral before my appointment. When I arrived to the small but cozy office, Dr. Ostrow opened the door and greeted me. He was very friendly and put me at ease. I felt welcomed and in good hands. I loved that he knew how to pronounce my last name correctly. He seemed genuinely interested in me, as well as kind and had a great sense of humor. Dr. Ostrow had already studied my x-rays and discussed my bottom wisdom teeth first. He let me know they are very close to the nerve and there is a risk of numbing if operated on, so he advised not having them taken out especially because they weren't bothering me. He went over the pros and cons in detail. I was completely comfortable with keeping them as is. I appreciated that Dr. Ostrow didn't try to get me to have them taken out just to make some money. He went on to say that the top right wisdom tooth can be taken out easily and he could do it right away. He let me know that at most I would feel discomfort for 1-2 days which can be taken care of with ibuprofen. I got a little bit emotional thinking about doing it during the same appointment, because I have low tolerance to pain. Dr. Ostrow graciously allowed me time to think about it and let me call someone for support. He also let me know the co-pay for the extraction, which was less than I expected. Finally, I decided to go ahead with it... After all, the next couple days there's going to be a snow storm so where am I going anyway? Dr. Ostrow got everything ready and gave me the shot to numb me, which was quite painful and it made me cry. That was the worst of it though. The receptionist came in to keep me company and make sure I was okay. That was comforting, and watching "America's Test Kitchen" was calming. Then, Dr. Ostrow numbed me some more to make sure I wouldn't feel anything. After that, I felt a slight pressure that lasted less than a minute and it was done. I was surprised and delighted that Dr. Ostrow had extracted my wisdom tooth so quickly. And I didn't feel any pain afterwards at all. Dr. Ostrow still prescribed me 800 ibuprofen just in case. By the end of the visit, I was in good spirits and laughing it up. After the appointment, I went on to shop at nearby Columbus Circle and then Brooklyn all day. Doesn't deserve any star really. 1. My girlfriend went there for a simple surgery, walked out with two stitches left in her mouth and a huge bill. I would not believe such lousy practice is still in business if I hadn't helped her pull out the stitches myself. ( btw she went back to him after feeling pain but was assured TWICE that it's fine) 2. His office is extremely hard to communicate with, we had to involve legal assistance/advocate just to rightfully obtain billing/medical documents. 3. Don't be fooled by ZocDoc reviews, he offered discount to take off negative ones, but we thought others need to be warned. 4. Did I mention his bill is 10 times the UCR on similar procedures? Funny that he kept telling my friend how "unhappy" he was with the negative review after causing such pain for her, just shows how unsympathetic and careless he is about his patients. Firstly, Ostro and I agreed on a set price for an implant procedure, but in the middle, he went back on his word and wanted a large amount of additional money to proceed. I had to go see a different oral surgeon to complete the procedure after giving Ostro a fortune ( This Bait-and-Switch behavior is also mentioned in another patients ZocDoc review). Also, After he injected me with novocaine and was ready to drill, he asked me to not tell my primary dentist about the procedure (they had an agreement where they would split the work) This post-novocaine, coercive tactic is also mentioned in another patients ZocDoc review). Also, he relentlessly tried to sell me additional, unwanted, services and would not leave me alone about it (This "salesman" tactic, which borders on harassment, is also mentioned in another patients ZocDoc review). I haven't had a tooth pulled in my adult years and was very worried it was going to be painful. Turns out the tooth was pulled so painlessly I had to double check with the doc that it was actually gone. Dr. Ostro handled a very challenging issue for me. His response was both professional and caring, a great combination. Not only did he respond to the urgency of the situation by accepting a referral on the same day, he actually followed up after the procedure in the evening to find out how I was doing. Amazing, educated, comforting, caring oral surgeon! Go see him! I went to him for a second opinion on my wisdom tooth and he put me at such an ease. Something very warming about him. He cared so much and knew I wanted to get this surgery done asap, so he was able to fit me in and perform the extraction of my tooth right then and there. He let me take the time to figure out my decision and figure out someone to pick me up. He also let me rest and recover until they got there. There was no rush at all. Great doctor overall! I went to Dr. Ostro's office first to consult about having teeth removed. Right away, the front desk receptionist, Yvette, made me feel at home. She was warm and friendly and took care of me efficiently and professionally. Dr. Ostro met with me, and right away I was struck by his wonderful, caring, professional yet extremely friendly demeanor. We went through what needed to be done for my poor mouth and he put me at ease. Come the day of the procedure for having my 3 teeth extracted, I was a nervous wreck and shed a tear or two (more like a thousand). But his exquisite and wonderful staff, Celeste and Mylo were right there to calm my fears. I mean, these ladies went beyond the call of duty to calm my down! I felt someone rubbing my arm, my face and it was so comforting (I'm actually tearing up now my stupid self). I was under IV sedation and I felt absolutely nothing. Despite my fears and all my angst, the procedure was over as I flew through the world on a cool high. Yep, IV sedation is the best for those of us who are not able to deal with such stressful situations. But OMG! I love the staff and Dr. Ostro for taking such good care of me. I am most likely, a lifer. Go see Dr. Ostro, Yvette, Celeste and Mylo if you want to be cared for in the most wonderful manner. I have no regrets and most of all, the procedure though costly, was far less than the first place I inquired which would have been a whopping $4000. Dr. Eliot Ostro saved me!!! I went through absolute hell before I met him (referred to him by a good friend ). It all started after I had a root canal done but still felt pain in that tooth. The Dentist I was seeing at the time (DR. Goddar at E57st in Manhattan), couldn't see anything through exrays. After working on a crown, and eventually finishing off the job even though I was in pain, and paying a small fortune, then I developed an infection, was referred to a surgeon, had bad surgery done.... Been going to Dr Ostro about 6 years now. First, for implants, then for Botox and dermafill. He's an angel and incredibly talented. I have tiny gums, but he made the implants work! I am also the worlds biggest chicken when it comes to needles. No, really. I've had several other dental care providers refuse to treat me because I get so scared and am so sensitive, they don't feel comfortable working on me. ( I have literally fallen out of the exam chair doing a butt crawl to get away from the needles being applied inside my mouth! ) Dr Ostro not only treated me successfully, he made me feel comfortable enough for me to let him use needle in my FACE (Botox, remember?)!! He explains everything until you understand and answers all your questions, never making you feel silly for asking or not understanding right away. His number one concerns are your health and satisfaction. I always tell him even though I carry my teeth around in my mouth, they really belong to him! His Botox and dermafill is AWESOME. Everything is properly stored and sterile, he would NEVER water the stuff down, maps your face, will let you examine unopened product. I have heard horror stories about Botox and fillers received at "health spas". If you've had this happen, this is the man you need to come see! My Botox lasts about 5-6 months and is flawless!
