    Eggs Benedict with salmon
    John A.

I was drawn in by the reviews online and after a stranger in the car park telling me it was the best coffee in Brisbane I was sure I made a great choice. The coffee selection is expansive and will cater to all tastes. The service speed was second to none and the hero of the day, the coffee, was amazing. The eggs Benedict was a strong contender even though on the high side for expense. A slight down side is a lack of parking which can slow down a quick coffee grab. This actually stopped me from dropping and grabbing a take away after my sit down visit. In summary, a truly great cup of coffee which would rival the best in Australia. Food 8/10 service 8/10 decor 7/10 coffee 9/10

Bit on the milky side, but a great coffee nonetheless!

After a great experience previously I decided to come down for a Monday morning breakfast. Nice and quiet as expected. 1 person in queue ahead of me, so the service was quick and friendly. I decided to sit in their outdoor seating, which was very comfortable as there was a cool breeze. My food arrived before I even had a chance to wonder where it was, even before my coffee! The eggs Benedict was pretty tasty, but nothing to write home about. It lacked a lot of flavour, minus the bacon which was cooked to perfection. The hollandaise sauce was very watery and made the bread soggy. I will definitely will think twice about ordering it again. My piccolo was delicious, full of flavour, and far from burnt. Maybe a little too milky? But that's really up to the interpreter. It was good enough for me to order another however. Overall the service itself is fantastic, the staff are really friendly, kind, and welcoming. They make me feel right at home. Thumbs up Elixir!

Granola - $14 for granola, pears, lots of cinnamon and yoghourt. Wasn't great.

Have come here coffee lots and sometimes food. Always busy. Hard to get a park. The coffee is pretty, but not unreal amazing. I think that comes with having to rush to keep up with the demand of customer. Had the Granola for $14. Granola, pears, lots of cinnamon and yoghourt. Wasn't great. Take my consumer advice Elixar, change to a Bircher Muesli. Cheap, & easy to make a huge batch each night. It's cool, fresh, sweat yet clean flavours. Presents better too.

Well, well. Look what we have here. In the industrial gully of Stafford, a fine coffee house has opened up in one of the warehouse spaces on Hayward Street (just off Webster Road). Little do people know, that the industrial sector of Stafford is actually already home to quite a few shopping treats, and now it's touting coffee. Elixir Coffee not only sell coffee, but they also roast their own beans in house. Their beans, which you can get natural or ground are sold at $18.50 for 500g (there are exceptions). The warehouse is divided into three different spaces. There's the front entrance where, (when I was there) a stream of people line up out the door waiting patiently for their morning caffeine serve. A processing line of baristas all tackle one detail each, and pump out cup after glorious cup of coffee. Working this way looks somewhat mechanical, but they're keeping wait times down, which they need to, especially if they are always as busy as they were this morning. Just yonder where all the magic happens is the indoor dining area. It's a fairly humble looking space. If I were you, I'd head outside. The outdoor dining area is located in what for all appearances looks like a garage. I'd suggest sitting here because the roasting machines and process is all on display, and smells heavily of coffee- more so than your usual cafe does. All of their stocks are out of harm's way, but also on show. The outside dining area is where it's at; it's got this nitty, gritty, bare-all kind of vibe to it. Elixir is not concerned with pretty decor, interior or exterior design, and the people seem to be diggin' it big time. Elixir is providing the northern suburbs with a type of cafe culture that you could usually only expect to find in the city, and even then, you'd have few choices. People were walking seemingly from every direction in a straight arrow to Elixir, their new local. The line out the door was encouraging. Every time I come out to Stafford, I'll be sure to pop in.

Hayward Street is heavily industrial, so you hardly expect it to produce such a fantastic venue for coffee and breakfast. But before you get too judgy and dismiss Elixir, I have to tell you about it's unexpected charm and the lovely coffee that awaits you past all the cars and buildings that surround it. This is a place that reminds you never to judge a book by its cover; that looks can be deceptive; that the best things come in small packages and all those other tiresome cliches that end up being unequivocally true. I prefer indoors to outdoors here because walking inside lifts you away from the industrial nature of the area and transports you to a different plane; a plane where coffee is smooth and majestic, and food is served quickly while managing to be just what you needed and have been craving since you dragged yourself out of bed. I'm such a sucker for cute little extra things that other place don't do. Let me be specific: with my perfect and large coffee came a sweet little card (almost a calling card if you will) commenting on the beans and the blend that the coffee was showcasing that particular day. On the day I wandered in, the tasting card and my coffee featured peru organic beans, which had a medium strength and a hint of chocolately flavour. The coffee was superb and the breakfast highly enjoyable and prompt. I also enjoyed the laid back atmosphere. The place gets fairly busy after nine and is obviously a hit with locals. Pop in and experience a true unexpected delight.

Smashed avo and Persian fetta with bacon
    Julia T.

Sometimes when we come here it's so busy you can't find a park, but when you time it right it's so worth it... The coffee is great and the food is always delicious! The back is really good, this last visit I added it as a side to the smashed avocado with Persian fetta.

Poached Eggs with Tomato, avo and Bacon! Yum!

Their interior…read morehas been done before - mismatched plates and cups, famous people as table numbers, kitsch china figurines and oddly, many lifesize jars of Nutella. But give it a chance. What gives this spot a point of difference, in my opinion, is their choose-your-own-adventure style breakfast menu. They give you the base (eggs and toast - $8.90) and the rest is up to you. Pulled pork (china town style, hoisin meets char siu and dances with soy), vegetable fritter, Haloumi, mushroom, hollandaise? The list is seemingly endless. I arrived to try it all out at 11:30ish on a Friday. It's not overly busy but noisy. You've been warned. The concrete shell of this store means sound proofing isn't an option. Their specialty drink appears to be a cappucino (Genovese beans) with weird and wonderful flavours like nutella or such mixed through. I stick with a flat white that's easy to drink but lacking any oomph. I had read a review previous to going that said ask for a double-shot if you prefer a real coffee kick and I'm inclined to agree. As tempted as I was by the sides menu, I opted for a 6-in Steak & Philly Sub ($10). I've never had a philly steak before but when my plate is served I'm a little lost as what to do with the second slice of baguette. Served as an open sandwich, I'd happily pay a little less for not having the lonesome slice of bread or pay a little extra to have more topping to use on the other slice. I'd actually also love to know if I could have swapped the baguette out for it all served on a bed of spinach. I quite like what's going on at Hansell & Gretel. It's not new but it is a new take on breakfast for this particular area which (and they're directly across the road from iconic Grub Street) I think makes it an interesting game of play for locals! I liked that it wasn't stuffy or pretentious, just familiar food done reasonably well.

Hansell & Gretel is a fairly new spot in Gaythorne, open for breakfasts and lunches every day of…read morethe week. It's small, unpretentious but a bit quirky, and does good food and coffee with friendly service and reasonable prices. The menu selection has some interesting things on there (each has a fairytale-themed name - cute), with a mix of savoury and sweet options, but what is excellent is the long list of extras that means you can tailor your meal to suit. I like being able to add avocado and haloumi to everything! There is also a small, slightly more lunch-focused section of the menu which has things like a burger, philly cheese steak sub, and banh mi. I'm told the philly cheese steak sub is good, it definitely is big! I haven't tried any of the sweet menu options yet, but so far the savoury things I've tried have been yum. They have a decent looking selection of cakes/muffins/etc, many of which are gluten-free or dairy-free (or both). Hansell & Gretel is right next to train (Gaythorne station) and bus (390), but free street parking is also available down nearby side-streets. Seating is both inside and outside, I just wish the outside seats got sunshine in winter! It should be a cooler outdoor spot in summer though to make up for it. Latest update: something has changed, and it's more than the refreshed menu with higher prices (that now exceed the value for money tipping point in my opinion - I know the Woodchopper's Breakfast is huge but it's also $28 and for breakfast I just can't bring myself to pay that). I can't quite put my finger on it but H&G is definitely not as great as it used to be, unfortunately. The coffee is still good, they still play good music, and the sweet treats cabinet still rates highly, but my brunch devotion has waned in favour of other places in the area.
