This store seems to be a place that changes for the sake of change. If it were good change, that…read morewould be great. Fortunately, all is not lost. Some of the good is still there. What's not good is downright ridiculous. For some reason, instead of fiction having nice wide open spaces where you can peruse books and find something new, it's now mostly in an aisle just wide enough for 2 people to stand in. Imagine standing in front of a bookshelf that goes from the floor to 6-7 feet in the air. Imagine not being able to back up more than a step or two and trying to see what's on the shelf. It's not an easy feat. Meanwhile, there is a great open sea in the middle of the store that's wide open. Clearance, you'll be happy to know, now takes up the former fiction spot. So the books that are easiest to see are the ones nobody really wants. Makes perfect sense. In other ideas that clearly make perfect sense, with fewer DVDs on the shelves these days, an upper shelf that is very convenient to browse has a few titles with the cover side out. The bottom shelf, where almost no one wants to go, is still full of product. Changing something and improving it is welcome. Changing it and actively making it worse sucks. I used to spend a fair amount of time browsing. Now I hit a couple of areas and I'm done. Oh - whoever decided putting a dvd rack by the exit should not be making important decisions. Ever. Other than that, it's an ok place to shop.

It's a couple storefronts away from Danville Dips. I love bookstores like The Authors' Patch. It "feels" like it's designed by a writer with its wood interior, warm atmosphere, and inspired decor. The Authors' Patch is bigger than you expect it to be. You can grab a drink, grab a chair, and immerse yourself in a diverse reading selection that includes local authors (including Valt), rare finds, used books, new selections, and more. The Authors' Patch hosts book signings (If I ever finish that ever elusive second book, I could easily see myself saying "The Authors' Patch, please?" I didn't get much time here, however, it was a sublime way to wind down after an emotional day clearing out my father's home. You can park on the town square (free 2-hour parking for most folks; 5-hour parking for disabled/accessible spots). The Authors' Patch does have a very slight step going into it, a point to note for those with accessibility needs. The bookstore itself is surprisingly accessible - only a couple tight spots. Again, I didn't get much time here. There's no doubt I'll be back when there's time to really browse and relax. Fun facts about the owner - she previously worked on the Child Sex Abuse Team for DCS. She lives in Danville with her husband on a farm that includes donkeys, cows, chickens, alpacas, and goats. I love indie bookstores. This locally owned, author owned bookstore is an absolute gem with a writer's vibe, a creative energy, and a warm sense of welcome. The Authors' Patch offers free wifi along with a variety of drinks or snacks for purchase. There's no question I'll be back.

Grab a drink and pick a table or chair to go on a little escape. There are several books and a checker table in the children's area. If you can't find what you are looking for don't be afraid to ask for help! My favorite area is in the front where the retold fairytale books are. At the cash register you'll find cool bookmarks and some things made on their 3D printer. They also sell a few snacks and some drinks for you to enjoy.

Their collection blends books and zines you haven't heard of yet with popular titles you often see and ones in between. They have a good range for different ages, too, with a nice young adult section, children's books, and middle grade as well as the plentiful shelves for adults. There's a local author shelf and there's a fun mix of local talent there in a variety of genres and age categories--plus sometimes, signed copies. They do carry some gift items like candles, and their custom stickers and apparel make me smile. The little book guys are fun! Tomorrow is well worth a stop if you're downtown. Whether you're wanting a book haul or supporting local with a sticker purchase, you'll find something here. Parking on Mass Ave is metered, but free on Sundays! There's also a parking garage nearby, and if you don't mind a walk, you may find some of the limited free street parking.

I purchased a book that's been on my to-read list for some time (Nightbitch) and a new book that I've never heard of before, but was very intrigued by (Strange Pictures). Knocking 1 star off because there is a very bad odor, like something is wrong with the plumbing, inside the whole shop and it cut my visit way shorter than I had planned because I couldn't stand breathing it in any longer.

Even with all the space they look pretty busy whenever I pass by, but that's only been on weekends, so it may be quieter during the week. On a weekend afternoon, though, you will not find quiet here. They have all the standard drinks you expect at a coffee shop and lots of fun specials, but the food selection is a little limited. I think they normally serve soup Mon-Sat but they were out when I got there. I got a bagel with schmear, a zebra (chocolate crinkle) cookie, and one of the February specials called "Opposites Attract" which was a raspberry chai latte. Everything I got was pretty good, especially the fresh, chewy zebra cookie. They warmed it up which made it just a little gooey. The raspberry chai was an interesting combination. i wasn't completely sold on the raspberry - I didn't dislike it but probably wouldn't get it again - but I think I liked the chai itself. The baristas and bookstore staff were all welcoming, and the vibe is very inclusive. I've come in and looked around the store a few times, and the staff seems approachable if you need anything but will leave you alone if you're just browsing.

Their latte prices are also as cheap as they can make them while still making a profit. A latte here would run you around $5 compared to the $8 or $9 at other cafes. They can also order any books you'd like if they don't have them in stock. Great book selection though and such friendly staff who are happy to help! This place is way more than a bookstore and cafe though- they host community events, have book clubs, hold poetry nights and more! You can really get involved in the community through a place like this! Wifi is good and free, plenty of space to study

The Whispering Shelf features a fabulous assortment of stationery/ cards, gifts, books with handwritten recommendations (always a sucker for these little personal touches from a bookstore) and an expensive children's section. I was especially enamored by the children's section and display. There were several interactive elements to keep kids busy while you peruse the shelves (smart!).
