Not only is this a huge sculpture of a small boat with men hunting with spears on top of a whale's tail, it is a sculpture that is in the middle of a fountain that looks magnificent when the water splashes all around it, making it seem as if we are on the set of a scene picturing the early 1900's when the men went out to catch these huge creatures of the sea. Beautifully lit during the night, it's admirable at all hours of the day, especially during summer. BUT not only is this a fountain of art, it also has the funky feature as it rotates a complete 360 degree turn during an hour. Sounds crazy, but believe me it's true. My cousin suggested going here and the day we went was perfect because it was a holiday for Norwegians and sunny. Literally the weather dictates what you wear and do. My family prepared a picnic and off we went. There is paid parking on a dirt lot. Make sure even on a sunny day to bring a scarf and a jacket, You never know. On this day it was sunny thou very windy and chilly. There is public restroom which is clean and free. There is also a restaurant on the premise overlooking the ocean and rocks. The rock formation is stunning. The wind has smoothed out the rocks and during hot summer days, you can swim in the water. It's very peaceful here, beautiful and every turn is a photogenic moment. A great place to go with your loved ones.

Fredriksten fortress is a fantastic arena for wide variety of events, from intimate theatrical performances to large car shows, concerts and sports events. A number of large outdoor areas and smaller freestanding forts are available for use. Managed and maintained by the national association for the preservation of fortresses.

However, I recommend purchasing the Oslo Pass, since it grants you free admission to all museums and public transportation. There are about 6 museums located in this area of Bygdøy. The Oseberg Viking Ship and the Gokstad Viking Ship are impressive. There is also a visual presentation of viking history every 15 minutes. The museum has many viking artifacts. It's small. You can probably see the whole thing in about one hour or so. The gift shop is also the cheapest of all the museum gift shops. 4 stars. Wonderful museum.

There are not as many artifacts as you might find in other museums but the Viking Ship Museum allows you to get up-close to the ships. Information is presented in both Norwegian and English and a QR code lets you download additional information. You can also download a free app at ITunes or Google Play. There is a museum brochure in 14 different languages as well. A film "The Viking Alive" is screen all day in a separate room and on the wall. The cafe serves light food and rinks during the summer.
