When we contacted Elevate, we were desperate for help for our 22 year old son who was an addict but showing signs of mental health. Mike the sales guy assured us that elevate was a dual function facility, "they treat the drug addiction and the mental health" IT IS NOT DUAL. It's barely addiction. My experience at this rehab facility was not only deeply disappointing -- it was traumatic. The program is marketed as dual-diagnosis, but that claim is dangerously misleading. There are no medical professionals on site at any time, and the staff are completely unqualified to handle mental health conditions. Most of them are former clients with minimal training and only a year or two of sobriety. I was locked in a remote, creepy cabin with no access to appropriate care. During a severe panic attack, I collapsed on the concrete -- crying, shaking, and visibly in distress. Multiple staff members saw me and walked by without offering help. They ignored my repeated requests to contact my employer or arrange appointments with my psychiatrist. When I decided to leave, they withheld my personal belongings and phone, pressuring me to stay for hours. It was only later I found out the program is affiliated with Scientology -- something they do not disclose upfront. Based on what I saw, this place appears to be an insurance scam hiding behind a rehab label. This is not a safe or ethical environment. If you or a loved one are seeking real help for addiction or mental health, look elsewhere. Place is ran like a cult. All of the positive reviews in here are from staff members who used to be clients. The Tahoe facility is poorly run. They had me signup in Watsonville under the influence and put $20,000 for treatment on my credit card while blowing a .34 BAC. I am 3 years sober now but not because of this program! I recommend Elevate addiction services if you are looking for a peaceful location in South Lake Tahoe. The counselors, there are ready to work with you on your rehabilitation, focusing on a holistic approach along with cognitive behavioral therapy. For me that worked very well because I'm not AA type of person. Obviously , the more effort you put into the program the better results you're gonna get out of it. The CrossFit and yoga that is offered , helped me to adjust my mindset to create a healthy routine. Don't go here!!! The intake director, Mike DiPalma, will lie to you and say whatever you want to hear to get your foot in the door. I told him I had a previous bad experience at a detox center and asked if men and women were housed together. He said no they weren't, told me we would all get to leave the facility twice a week to go to Target, that there were medical staff on site 24/7, and that I would be allowed to check my cell phone for an hour a day every 2-3 days since I am self employed and have a special needs child who I was trying to get into a program. I spoke to him twice before arriving and he made it sound like he would be there. When I arrived I was told Mike lives in another state. My first red flag. Everything upon intake was like a military operation, it felt very weird. Firstly, they do everything they can to hide that you will first be taken from the main building up to an isolated little cabin (it is mentioned on their website, but it is buried way down in one short sentence and is easy to miss) where men and women ARE housed together with only ONE staff member there from 10pm-7am. Imagine how safe I felt in a cabin in the woods, far from society, locked up with scary people (see below) and one tiny little woman there as staff all night! There is no doctor on site, I saw him once on Zoom for ten minutes. There is a nurse who will visit the cabin a couple of times a day but leaves at 9pm. So if you need any medication during your detox between 9pm-9am, you're shit outta luck. I felt like I was in a horror movie, a la The Cabin In The Woods. During this time you are in what they call "blackout", not allowed ANY access to the outside world, not allowed to speak with any family. You can't even see the news, they have a few dvd's that are all nature/documentary stuff but by day 2 you've seen everything they've got. I'm a female rape victim, and we had men coming into stay at the cabin in the bedroom next door to mine who had come straight from prison. I heard one bragging about rapes he had committed, while another one became violent with the staff on his first night over them wanting him to take a urine test. His (male) room mate was scared to sleep in the same room with him that night, so you can imagine how I felt being right next door! The staff is all ex-addicts who have recently completed the program and have the bare minimum of training to be a "detox technician". I heard one of them say if you graduate you are basically guaranteed a job. Basically the detox cabin, where people are the most vulnerable, is where they put the most recent grads. The whole thing felt weird and cult-y and I later learned that Elevate is a front for Scientology, and had had six or seven different names since they started. It all makes sense now... They thought that putting an opiate addict on Subutex and weaning them off in 5-10 days would work. That is NOT how Subutex works!!! Several people were weaned off too quickly and became very sick once they left detox, I was told. The staff is a mixed bag, a couple of them were amazing and I'll never forget them. However, most of them were lacking in compassion, seemed very young with no life experience, and/or extremely inappropriate. One of them liked to tell us how he was once a famous rap star with bodyguards (yeah right... he has one shitty song on Apple Music), all he did was dick around loudly and play favorites with some of the patients. He also walked in on me in the bathroom without even knocking, opening the door so that the whole room could see me in there with my pants down. (No locks on bedroom or bathroom doors, which makes bathing quite scary in that situation....) I was told after 7 days that I would be allowed to call my family, so I toughed it out to get to that magical 7th day. But when I got there I was then told that since I hadn't yet weaned off of my medications, I wouldn't be allowed to talk to them until I did, plus after three more days of observation. So I was looking at 2 plus weeks without any contact with my family, which is NOT what I had been told repeatedly. Also, when I asked about getting to use my phone as Mike had promised, I was told no one gets that. By then I was ready to "elevate" my ass right out of there. It took an entire day of arguing with the staff to get them to release me, I started around 1:00pm and around 10:00pm, when I began to use the words "legal rights" and "my attorney", they released me. And during the whole day they continued to lie, first saying no one can be released after 2:00pm, then saying no one was around to open the safe and release my property to me. Magically, both of those things happened! Oh and when they got Mike on the phone as I was leaving? He didn't want to speak to me at all. Seems legit, right? If you are reading this review, my heart is with you because it most likely means you are looking for a program for a loved one. I found myself in this position three months ago, which was daunting. However, being on the other side of rehab with my son, I am here to share with you our most positive experience with Elevate. Elevate has delivered on everything they said they would do. From my first call to get information to graduation, we have experienced a lot of caring, understanding and professionalism. Even though my son had agreed to go into rehab, he was able to talk to someone on the phone who explained to him what the program is about and what he could expect. The facilities are simple, but the setting of the program is absolutely beautiful and serene. My son was able to call me every day, form an Elevate cell phone, and share the process he was going through, including a lot of his insights. The curriculum is complete, well organized, and well paced. My son already had some self-awareness, but the Elevate curriculum had him delve deep into every corner of his mind and heart, giving him a deep understanding of his relationship to life and drugs. During his first week at Elevate I received a daily report on him and subsequently, I received a weekly call from our family coordinator. During these calls, I was given all the time that I needed to ask questions and share things that I thought they should address with my son. Elevate was the key to my self discovery. I can't say enough wonderful things about this program.. I was a client for 90 days. I came into the program broken, miserable, hopelessly addicted, and hopelessly unaware of my abilities to be happy. A complete scam. Any service that charges you over $ 5,500.00 for alcohol abuse is offensive and unjust. Every member I dealt with was worse than a car salesman. In June of this year, we realized how much our son struggled with alcohol and depression. We were overtaken with fear and a sense of helplessness. We began a search on the Internet to find a facility that would be a good fit for him. We spoke with several Elevate admission counselors, and our son agreed to go, which was the beginning. We received an update every day during his first week of being admitted. For the first time in a long time, we had a sense of hope and promise. We spoke to our son every Sunday, and we began to get a sense of improvement and positivity. Every week we could hear a change in him. He was happier, healthier, and hopeful. Now, our son had a positive outlook on life. He graduated from the Elevate program after four months and subsequently moved into a sober living facility. He continues on a path of sobriety, improvement, and self-growth. We realize that his results will not be the same for all. But our experience has been nothing but gratifying. In 2016 I had a alcohol addiction with serious legal matters, and completely felt hopeless. As a self serving, egotistical DJ in San Francisco Radio for 30 years, to say I hit rock bottom is an understatement. My wife contacted Elevate in August 2016 without my knowledge, and told me to get in the car, my bags better be packed, and we are going to meet a guy named Kevin at Elevate. Scared, Addicted, and Feeling Hopeless, we took the long drive to Watsonville in silence. Well I will say this in 2021, that ELEVATE was the BEST DAMN THING or GIFT per se' MY WIFE ever gave to me. Sure, there are RULES, but there are rules in life, and the work there isn't easy, but nothing about changing your addiction habit is either, hence you gotta put in the work. I spent decades destroying my life, in night clubs, on the radio, and any other situation that was alcohol driven to justify me being drunk to my family, wife, and friends, so 90 days is a small sacrifice, for a lifetime of HAPPINESS, STABILITY, and SOBRIETY (ask my wife)...! Sure I saw the negative review's, but I can GUARANTEE YOU, those reviews were coming from people still in they're addiction, won't accept accountability, and wanna play the blame game for they're inability to put in the WORK, to get sober! I loved the FACILITY, I loved the CURRICULUM (that made me take a hard look at myself), and I LOVE MY NEW LIFE! BTW, you can see all of my YELP reviews have never been challenged, deleted, or questioned, so you can take that for what it is, but if your struggling with addiction? Than this is the go to spot, which is better than JAIL, THE STREET, or God forbid THE FUNERAL HOME! They are amazing first off all of the staff has been through what you're in the middle of so when they say "I know how you feel" its real they do. I recently sent a loved one up to Elevate South Lake Tahoe for rehab. The entire process was relatively straight-forward. The admissions counselor was very helpful and compassionate. The detox staff at their facility in Placerville called every day to give an update on my loved one's condition and kept me in the loop with their progress. After detox, the family coordinators from South Lake Tahoe called me daily to provide updates and discuss my loved one's care. I found all of the staff to be helpful, caring, and compassionate. One word of caution regarding Elevate: they bill themselves as being a dual-diagnosis facility, but they are not. They do not have any psychiatrists or psychologists on staff. They also do not have resources to treat patients with underlying mental illness. This is an important factor to consider when selecting a treatment facility, as substance abuse and mental illness often go hand-in-hand. Ultimately, Elevate ended up discharging my loved one because they couldn't provide them with the care they needed. While this obviously wasn't ideal, they handled this difficult situation about as well as could be expected given the circumstances. In short, I believe Elevate would be a great fit for individuals that have no underlying mental illness. For those that do, however, I think you'd be better served looking for a facility with a psychiatrist or psychologist on staff. Lastly, I feel it prudent to mention that I tussled with how many stars to give. If my review had been based on the staff alone, it would have easily been 5 stars. However, the treatment my loved one received is the subject of the review, and while they received great treatment while they were there, they ultimately couldn't provide them with the treatment they needed. read more

Their management team are bullies. I've never experienced such a negative response to my needs. It was all about them maximizing their insurance claims and holding you at their campus.. They did not care or show any empathy for an injury that flared up in detox. The staff is great but if you attempt to deviate from your stay for whatever reason, they will back you into a corner like a used car salesmen. In all, the program is a good one. However, if something crops up for you personally that requires your departure pre original date you signed up for. Good luck with that. They pushed back so hard I had to quit the program because I needed surgery sooner than later. I was scheduled to stay there for 90 days. However this length of time was not conducive to my situation, which was s previous injury flair up. I was told by one of their team members, there is a about a 20% drop out rate. I cannot confirm or deny what I was told. This number seems to be accurate in my mind over a 9 day visit. I agreed to stay on a 30 day program but they just kept pushing back with caveats and manipulation. Bottom line. Great program with several bad seeds which should be removed. Again, I was willing to stick the 30 day program out as opposed to a 90 due to my injury. However, the non eye contact and dirty looks in my opinion coupled with snide remarks forced me to leave the program. Pure condensation. They tell you it's all about you and your health. BOTTOM LINE IS MONEY. This is the account of my experience. I do not claim to know how other clients that dropped out how or why they dropped like I did. I recommend you research reviews in whatever format you can find before entering this program. This is just a heads up. 95% of the employees are recovering addicts. This is a good thing with the exception of their on site managers in my strong opinion. For all I know, a large percentage of reviews are from employees. I'm extremely skeptical st this point reading through some of their reviews. I have enlisted in another program post surgery on my injury. Again, their intentions are good but the dollar supersedes your individual goals and needs in my opinion. If you can act like a 10 year old and do what your told. A very close friend of mine was in serious trouble and asked for our help. He had tried every 12 step rehab around and was looking for a new program. We weren't sure if he could afford Elevate or even how to start the process, but when we called they took the time to explain all of his options in detail. They were patient, kind, and understanding. We had never had this kind of service before so of course we were impressed. Once he started the program and we were able to communicate with him, he told us it was so much different and far superior to any other facility he had been before. The counselors were all understanding and insightful. He progressed very quickly, but of course along the way had a few emotional set backs. The team at elevate were always there for him no matter what. The level of communication and respect was beyond anything he or I had ever experienced before. I noticed a big change in him 2 weeks into the program. He was positive, happy and hopeful for the first time in years. I am proud to say that our dear friend is clean and sober and just made his one year anniversary. We are so thankful to the team at elevate. It's hard watching someone you care about struggle with addiction, but it is inspiring to watch them conquer their struggle and grow into the person you already knew they were/could be again. Having watched a friend go down the rough road of one bad decision turning into a worse one, hope peaked over the horizon upon her admission and eventual success with Elevate's program. Treatment here, combined with the loving, passionate staff, and her own determination ultimately created an environment where she became strong enough to know what she wanted in life. And life changed not just for her, but her family and our friends. There is nothing more remarkable than seeing a complete 180 in someone's life, and Elevate is partially to thank for that. Counselors here are very open and happy to keep family updated, which I feel is important because sometimes people don't know the best way to support others, and then continue to be supportive down the long road of change and commitment to that change. Programs like this bring about that change because they aren't treating addiction like it's just a small part of you; they treat addiction through a holistic method, working on mind, body and soul. The setting is beautiful and their emphasis on fitness I think is incredibly special. Taking care of your body and mind and keeping them both strong helps you love yourself more, and my friend is not only so very loved by the people she now surrounds herself with, but she loves herself to make sure she's surrounded by those kinds of people. I am writing this review because I believe that I was misled by this program. The program recently changed it's' name from Narconon to Elevate. Narconon is directly related to Scientology. The Narconon program has several pending lawsuits against them. The parent company for Narconon is the same parent company for Elevate, Halcyon Horizons. I was informed that the methods employed by Elevate are different from Narconon, but in doing research I found they are the same methods. They are also not equipped to deal with dual diagnosis. There methods may be appropriate for some, however I was misled and there is an underlying deceitfulness to the program. I strongly urge families to thoroughly research the program, the connection to Narconon, and the parent company prior to enrollment in the program. read more

I was a client at this facility. Elevate operates as they were Narconon but with some changes -workbooks are condensed but the material is the same- Ethics, values, communication. Terminology has been changed, instead of being called "students" are now "clients", Instructors are now Counselors, Family Liaison is Family Counselor, Suppressive People (SP) are Toxic people TP's. You're still in a classroom type setting called Education block (Ed block) you read a page from their Phase books, do an assignment, raise your hand & for a "counselor" to review your answer who then off on it so you can move on to the next reading/assignment. You start off with a dictionary & look up the definition of communication write it down then write what communication means to you - really elementary stuff I don't know how it pertains to sobriety - this is the same as the 1st Narconon workbook. Phase 2 involves 4 Ed Blocks (class is about 2 hrs) doing "observations" - You spend 5 minutes observing an object - a blade of grass, a bottle, a sign, a leaf, then describe it - the leaf is green, it has some red in it, and so on. They punish clients by issuing CV's (conduct violations) a fellow client was having a difficult few days (being in Rehab is emotional afterall) Instead of staff helping them cope they were put on 4 days of amends. Amends is having to perform laborious chores, raking leaves, pulling weeds, cleaning bathrooms, mopping floors etc. When you don't work the program your completion of the program is then delayed. If you're educated the coursework is easy & you'll finish the program quicker. Elevate has no housekeeping or janitorial staff. clients clean the entire facility once a week in addition to having assigned daily chores which is daily cleaning of the facility and the grounds. You must clean your room everyday in addition to a once a week deep clean & they're extremely nit picky, looking for any tiny flaw to issue a "CV". My roommate & I were very clean & orderly but were issued CV's because there was a couple of small tree leaves that had been tracked in & they said the room wasn't clean enough. You must work off a CV by performing more chores. They manipulate it to say there's a reason the clients do all these chores as it's to learn "life skills" - as a professional responsible adult (just because you have a problem doesn't mean you require that type of childish discipline) This is better suited towards young who lack emotional maturity. Staff has no advanced education, let alone college degrees in counseling/therapy or drug/alcohol counseling. Staff members went through the program (majority went through the Narconon program & were Narconon staff) All staff were hired on as trainees & took an on online certification course obtaining the lowest level of certifications - RADT - Registered Alcohol & Drug Technician & CADC - Certified Alcohol & Drug Counselor. Many staff have a short time of sobriety themselves - less than 1 year. Contrary to their website/advertising claims they have a medically supervised detox with doctors & nurses on staff THIS IS NOT THE CASE. There are NO MEDICAL PROFESSIONALS on staff, let alone 24/7 which is frightening as detoxing can have serious complications. They have 1 contracted MD (google Dr. Stein) I never ONCE saw a DR. On ly a contracted Nurse Practitioner and 1 nurse. The detox is a small cabin & COED! Bathrooms, kitchen &living space is shared with both sexes. Any woman who's had past trauma (assault, abuse) this is NOT the place for you! You're also sequestered in detox & you have 0 contact with family/friends. You don't learn about the program until you're out of detox & learn it's not what they made it out to be. By that time it's too late to get a refund when you realize it's not the program for you & it's not what they made it out to be. They also will call your family to forewarn them you may want to leave (because you learned what the program is really like & question how their coursework has anything to do with sobriety) and you want to leave because you're craving drugs/alcohol and are trying to manipulate you by being critical of the program - so when you speak to your family they won't believe you when you tell them what the program is really like. They claim they can treat co-occurring disorders, depression, anxiety etc & that you get an individual program - that's not true. Staff isn't qualified to treat anxiety/depression disorders and the program is one size fits all. I paid $39,500 and they submitted my claim to my insurance & they billed $80,000.00 for 30 days and that's just room & board - another $4999.00 for alleged daily "therapy" which I never had (you have only a once a week session with a one on one "counselor) and $3000 for lab work when I only had 5 urinalysis. I would not recommend this program. They claim a high success rate but the majority of clients leave the program after they find out about it. read more

This is absolutely the BEST rehab ever! My son has been to many. And failed them all. This one is the real thing. Not only is the staff superb but the program is amazing. My son is clean and wants to stay clean for the rest of his life. He has turned his life around and I owe it all to Elevate. I cannot thank them enough!! My son would probably be dead if it was not for him going to Elevate. This is the first place that has taught them how to cope and how to stay away from bad things. They give them Life Skills. Their website looks and promises more than it delivers. The facility needs some TLC. I was told this program has been in existence for 10 years, when in fact, it's been only about 10 months. Narconon was the previous program which is associated with Scientology. We were definitely made to feel welcome and I was truly hopeful that this program would be a positive experience. As far as the medical detox, there is not a doctor or nurse on the premises on a daily basis. A nurse comes in twice a week. The detox is overseen by counselors. Dr. Stein is consulted once during initial intake. I was told he would contact my son's doctors to review all his tests. They were never contacted. I feel the program would work better if there was more one-on-one counseling (only twice a month), and the client's were doing more than "workbook" reading and writing, i.e., discussions and feedback. They are penalized for any form of negativity and he felt like he was walking on eggshells. In the end, he is clean, except for a raging case of scabes! read more
