Despite always paying rent and maintaining a safe, organized space, management blindsided me with a non-renewal notice right before the holiday season -- the busiest time of year for my work. Their decision, paired with a complete lack of empathy or communication, forced me to dismantle my entire workspace and move equipment during peak production. I'm not just disappointed; I'm disheartened by how management treats tenants who are actually creating something. Instead of supporting a small independent maker, they chose to add unnecessary stress and costs during a critical period. The "creative community" they advertise is a façade -- it's a corporate environment run by people who have no real understanding of artists or small-scale manufacturing. If you're an artist, designer, or small business owner considering ActiveSpace, I strongly advise you to look elsewhere. The people managing this property have no idea how to foster a supportive environment. They treat creators like liabilities, not the reason their buildings stay alive. I've never experienced such disregard for human decency or timing. Evicting or forcing out a small business in November -- during the holidays -- says everything about their priorities.

While I ended up renting a space at the Raleigh location in 2017, Betsy was always available to help me, as the managers for the last 9 years at Raleigh have been GOD AWFUL. I love this location and my studio, but always wished Betsy could be our manager. Lo and behold, my wish recently came true!! I am THRILLED to have such a consistent, hardworking, dedicated, personable, kind, amazing manager who goes ABOVE AND BEYOND. For the first time since 2017, the Raleigh building is actually functioning the way it should! Many managers have come and gone and have been absolute shite. But Betsy? A bonafide ROCKSTAR!!! This woman deserves a raise, promotion, AND bonus for how she's gotten this property back into shape. For the first time in almost 10 years as a tenant, I feel taken care of and safe here. She is ABSOLUTELY AMAZING and the reason I'm choosing to continue renting here. This woman is GOLD and needs to be protected at all costs!! We had a disappointing experience at EWF Modern - inconsistent pricing and poor customer…read moreinteraction. My wife and I visited the store to look at BDI brand furniture options and ended up in front of a BDI Sequel sit/stand desk that was marked as a discounted floor model, with a separate, higher price if it included the keyboard drawer as it was configured. During that visit, the owner told my wife that if we chose the lower-priced option, they would remove the keyboard drawer and use it on another floor model when it arrived. Based on that information, we left to think it over and returned roughly an hour later to purchase. However, when we came back, the original pricing and option were no longer on the hang tag, and a hang tag with the higher price was in it's place. When I asked whether the desk could still be purchased without the drawer as previously discussed, the response was dismissive and unexpectedly confrontational "what would they even do with a detached keyboard drawer." - how about what you said you would?? In other words, we were treated like idiots who couldn't remember a simple conversation from an hour earlier. At that point, the issue wasn't just the price -- it was the way the situation was handled. To be clear: changing your mind about a deal is one thing. Gaslighting your potential customers and talking down to them is something else entirely - the interaction was condescending and dismissive of what had been clearly communicated earlier. We ended up walking away, and while we only live two blocks from this place we will go to Beaverton to Parker furniture or up the street to Kitchen Kaboodle as they are both BDI dealers with a much better customer centric approach. Unfortunately, this experience left us with no confidence in the consistency or transparency of the sales process here.

The furniture is of high quality and has a designer feel without being over the top. The pieces fit beautifully and comfortably into your space, adding to the personality of the room, reflecting your style without looking like a DWR showroom. Working with Erez was wonderful. I love to decorate and design so have my own ideas; being able to bounce these ideas around with a designer to validate or suggest alternatives was incredibly helpful. Especially since the furniture is an investment, you don't want to make a mistake! White leather lounge chairs are what brought me to EWF Modern. After searching long and hard online, I finally found the chairs I thought would be perfect for a bump out reading nook with fabulous views. No way I would chance buying online without sitting in the chairs, seeing the workmanship, the quality of the leather and materials, and the visual size. Plus, I want to support our local businesses. The chairs are exactly what I had envisioned! While they don't offer delivery on these chairs, for a small fee they will assemble the chairs and I will ask a friend with an SUV to pick them up. I will be ordering soon and am already considering a coffee table and rug! Ditzy, the French bulldog, is adorable! As soon as I saw her, I gave her some love in the form of back scratches and that was all it took to become her BFF. The cherry on top of the EWF experience.

The company has opened this retail space where they sell the building materials they salvage, as well as the various household goods and collectibles they collect as well. This is the place where you can find just about anything in Portland... from sheet metal siding, vintage window weights, and lumber, to high quality antiques and collectibles. What I love most about Lovett Deconstruction is their amazing sense of style, and their curated displays throughout the property. They appear to collect collections, and my maximalist brain lights up when I walk into this space. Make sure to explore every corner of the building and surrounding grounds where you'll find all kind of interesting nooks and crannies full of treasures. In fact, there several interesting meeting spaces available to rent as well. This place is so cool. I knew Lovett Deconstruction existed (did you know the city of Portland…read morerequires deconstruction rather than demolition?) but I only recently learned that they have this salvage shop. I haven't yet in this lifetime been in need of deconstruction services, but I am often in need of a little tchotchke purchased secondhand. Now it's called a salvage shop, and it does have cool materials available for sale. They've primarily got lumber by the foot, for flooring and siding, which I don't need. But they also have smaller architectural or decorative items - lamps, cabinet hardware, art, grates, vases, etc, etc. A vintage item can add such a "je ne sais quoi" to your home decor and I highly recommend using secondhand for a sense that a place is truly lived-in and has a story. But half the shop, or maybe more, is more like a museum! The owner of Lovett has these incredible collections on display here, from baseball bats to thermoses to first aid kits to cassette tapes to old pencil sharpeners. They're arranged like art and are ever-growing. They're not for sale and in fact the owner says they're priceless. If ever you get a chance to hear the owner speak about his collections, it's clear he's passionate about his work and he sees the story behind every single item: a baseball bat isn't just a piece of wood, it's someone's childhood. I really enjoyed visiting this store, both because of my love for thrift as well as home design/decorating. It's out there in the industrial area but worth a visit. They do also have an event space!
