We moved into our house in December only to discover quite a lot of DIY electrical work... SOME was visible during inspections, but the majority of it was hiding behind the sellers personal items as they were still living in the space. We had loads of loose outlets, breakers that were double tapped, wiring (some not covered properly) running everywhere in our attic, and extension cords... EVERYWHERE. Extension cords spliced behind the TV, extension cords repurposed into outlets... I will never have to buy another extension cord. Needless to say we didn't feel totally safe in the space, especially with our 10 month old crawling around the loose outlets. Ross came out to look at the space and give us an estimate. We had gotten a few quotes we didn't feel comfortable with. From day one I felt good about working with Ross and I appreciated that he didn't make it seem like the electrical in our attic was completely doomed. My digital electronic shower control valve stopped working 3 years ago. It was manufactured by Memry Corp, which was purchased by American Standard, and then discontinued. Over the past 3 years, I've had at least 10 'professionals' try to get it working. I've taken the unit to computer repair technicians, plumbers, electricians and contractors to no avail. From what I learned, it was unclear what the problem was, since it could be electrical, plumbing or mechanical related. Ready to give up, I began looking at replacing everything with new Kohler or Steamiest units. I found that the bids for hardware alone were approximately $9,000 (Snyder-Diamond and Ferguson). I then started calling contractors and found that the demolition, re-plumbing the new unit, marble removal/replacement, etc added another $10K. So, this past week, I gave it one more try before committing $20K to the project. I called the top 5 Yelp electricians in Sherman Oaks to see if they could help. One top rated company said they didn't want the job (something about electricity and water scared them), one said it was too small, a 3rd said they don't 'trouble-shoot' discontinued products, and the 4th didn't return my 3 calls/messages. Number 5 on the list was Ross at Electric Universe. When I spoke to him and explained how many before him had tried and failed, he didn't seem concerned. He also didn't care about working with discontinued units. He accepted the challenge, and he wasn't afraid. When I met him at my home, I quickly got the impression that he could do anything electrical. It seemed that he liked the idea that no one else could fix it, and I got the sense that liked the challenge. In a little over an hour, he had tested out the electrical issues, figured out the mechanical issue (electrical actuator, not powering the electronic valve) and had water flowing in my shower for the first time in 3 years. He saved me the expense and disruption of a complete remodel. But the experience also showed me that there a lot of 5 star yelp businesses, that pick and choose what they will and won't do. Ross accepted the challenge, and I am very grateful, for his professionalism and perseverance. Not all electrical jobs are 'cookie cutter' jobs. Anyone of the 5 could probably replace a breaker, install recessed lights or hang a flat panel TV. But, to hear a customer say how difficult the job would be, and to accept the challenge, sets Ross, and Electric Universe ahead of his 5 star peers. We were having a problem with our air conditioning not getting any voltage, so first I went through my home warranty company. The electrician they sent out told us some bogus story about how we needed our entire circuit breaker replaced, and that since it was most likely caused by dried paint on the wiring, the home warranty company wouldn't cover it. Rather than take this dude's word for it, I contacted Electric Universe. All of the five star reviews are well deserved! From my initial email to the day the electricians arrived, the service was fantastic. On the day they came to look at the circuit breaker, Electric Universe (I think the fellas names were Ken and Mario- but it's been a couple of weeks and I may be misremembering, sorry!) could immediately tell that the entire circuit breaker definitely didn't need to be replaced. Instead, they offered to replace only the breaker for the A/C and helped us test and re-label all the circuits. Talk about integrity! They saved me $1,000!
