My least favorite thing about this place is that when you order takeout and go pick it up, they gate keep the card reader and then will basically high-pressure sales you to leave a tip. How much tips do you wanna leave? Do you wanna leave 15% you wanna leave 10%? How about 0% because you didn't serve me, and I'm helping keep your restaurant in business by ordering food from you. Having spent years in the hospitality industry, this is just crass and a terrible customer experience, and we need to normalize not leaving tips just for being a patron. Somewhat surprised to find I haven't previously reviewed El Tequila. This is a local (ish) Mexican restaurant with locations in Shawano, New London, Antigo & Wausau (?). I've only ever been to the Shawano location. The restaurant is decorated in a loud Mexican theme that fits the vibe of the experience. We enjoy the flavor associated with the complimentary chips & salsa. The place frequently seems loud & busy, but there's never been a problem quickly being seated. The wait staff are friendly and enthusiastic while going about their duties. Pretty good flavor for the different offerings and reasonable prices accompanied by daily specials. A definite must in the Shawano area if Mexican cuisine is the way you want to go. read more

Very disappointing experience. Passed by numerous times and saw a lot of cars in the lot so we thought we'd give it a try. Staff wasn't very enthused. They seemed disorganized. It was a substantial wait for our two entrees. Chips and salsa helped pass the time but there was no offer to refill either of them as we waited. When the food did arrive, it had obviously spent a lot of time under the heating hood. Plates were very hot and the food was soggy. Not much to brag about in the taste of the food either. Hot sauce was the only alternative. When paying the bill, I was shortchanged $10. I brought it to their attention and he tossed a $10 bill on the counter and walked away. We dined at El Tequila on our first night during our recent trip to Shawano. The prices here cannot be beat. Ginormous strawberry margaritas and cold cerveca are the popular beverages but they do have wine for $2.99 a pour. I say go for that tasty salted-rim margarita. I wanted a lighter bite and was happy that they would serve a chicken enchilada a la carte. My enchilada had a nice savory red sauce but it was luke warm. I had a bite of seafood fajitas with sizzling shrimp and white fish which was tasty. Service was quick and friendly. I would easily come back for their bottomless tortilla chips with salsa. read more

El Tequila... where to begin! I have been coming to this spot for years now, and have never once had a negative experience! This place deserves 5 starts across the board for several reasons, which I will lay out. When people come to Shawano to visit me, I make a point to make sure they try this place. Food: I like to roll with the Burrito Carne Asada, Tequila Grilled, or the Fajitas. All three are exceptional! I've had friends and family visit and rave about the dishes they try, and the quality is always high. By the way, the cheese sauce hits on all levels as well, and brings love to anything you order. Chips are nice, salsa is flavorful, and the menu has wide array of options. Also, the Margaritas blended or on ice, are both great bang for your buck. 5/5 Service: Every person in the building is respectful, kind, and attentive. When my water is low, they ask. They carry 7 piping hot plates on ONE ARM, and make it look like it is nothing to them. Never a complaint. Several employees have been there for awhile, and they have never failed at bringing a wonderful dining experience. Also, this is a fun place to bring people on their birthday 5/5 Price: I think that they ask the perfect amount. Whether I went there as a college kid, or a working member of society, I never was worried about the price. I think they have changed the menu and it isn't very good, there is no spice in the food and that was one reason we used to go there. If you want Mexican food and you do not like spice then eat somewhere else. Don't let the Chinese place exterior decor fool you, the interior decor will more than make up for it with bright blues, yellows, pinks, all the festive colors. Expect a standard Mexican restaurant menu with about twice as many items with a decent price. The staff is very personal and welcoming whether it is your first or hundreth visit. Portions are slightly more than adequate for the price, and quality of food varies dish to dish with a steady middle between. My own minor complaint is the lack of modifying dishes. For example: I cannot eat peppers, but the particular combo I have had a few times comes with a stuffed pepper. I requested a substitution, only to still have it with no sub. I tried a few times, but the same events happened. Now I simply give it to my girlfriend, and we're both happy for the most part. Take a trip to shawano and grab a bite. Its worth it. read more

A superior Mexican restaurant (and, to my San Francisco-and-Chicago eyes, a great value) in a somewhat unexpected location. Two big, brightly-decorated rooms, festive and colorful without being garish or cliched. Our party of five (two local, three visitors ) was seated at once during a busy lunch hour, and presented with fresh house-made chips and a sort of mini-carafe of house-made red salsa. Excellent 12-ounce lime margaritas followed, a real bargain at $2.99 (but I'm told they used to be $1.95). Lunch specials run in the $6.00 range; nothing especially unusual, but well-executed. My choice was a chicken chimichanga, accompanied by a guacamole salad, creamy beans, rice, and sour cream. I'll definitely be back to try their dinner service on a my next visit to Shawano. read more

As a Chicago native, there are a million amazing Mexican restaurants throughout Chicago, so I have had my fair share of delicious Mexican cuisine, but El Tequila has great service, cheap prices, and great food! I had chorizo tacos with cilantro and onion, and it tasted just like my favorite tacos from a restaurant in Chicago. My husband and I had dinner at El Tequila for Cinco de Mayo and we LOVED IT! I am super surprised in the lack of reviews for this place. First of all, do not be detoured because it looks like a Chinese restaurant from the exterior. The interior and the environment was VERY festive, fun, and lively! The place was super busy but we were seated very quickly. The staff was super friendly and very accommodating. They were willing to answer our questions and eager to give suggestions. The food was amazing! I haven't had good Mexican food since I moved to the North and it felt just like home. I had a Chicken Chimichanga with rice & refried beans. I ate every single drop. My husband had the Monterey Burrito with R&B. He cleaned his plate as well. The margarita's we large and pretty good. I am not a fan of the mix they used (too sweet for me) so I will probably order a different drink next time. I can't say enough great things about this place. I was in Shawano on business and went in to El Tequila on a Wednesday evening during the dinner hour. This restaurant was reasonably priced, had a fun, brightly colored Mexican themed decor, offered great service, and quality food. A flavorful basket of chips with salsa was delivered to my table quickly after I was seated and after ordering, my sizzling hot plate was delivered in record-pace time. I ordered chicken fajitas and was impressed with the flavor and quality of the ingredients. The vegetables looked and tasted fresh, and the chicken was quality white meat, not processed as I've been served at a few other "Authentic" Mexican restaurants lately.
