I dropped my dad off at the bus station. Bus was leaving in 15 minutes. He asked me to find him some tacos for the trip. I looked up El Taquito and rushed over. When I walked in the employee asked me how my trip was etc. very polite (I had an spi shirt on so he knew I was a tourist). I explained my dad was at the bus station and the bus left any minute. He went into immediate action. Went to the kitchen and got them to expedite my order. Have me coffee to go, salsa and cream. Bam! Took five minutes. I'll ask my dad how the tacos were. But the customer service was absolutely top notch and I'm very appreciative. I got back to my dad at 8:29. Bus left at 8:30. Victory. Thanks again! read more

Food is good. Service is excellent. Staff if friendly. Prices comparable. Chalupas and enchiladas are delicious.

I steer clear away from this one anytime I am in Harlingen. With so many choices for Tex-Mex in Harlingen, I don't understand why anyone would want to eat here. I've seen several cockroaches in the restaurant before, not to mention how incredibly dirty they keep it in the kitchen. That is not excusable. Their service is also a hit or miss... I know 90% of residents in Harlingen speak Spanish, but when I can't find not even one person to assist me in English, something is wrong there. There have been instances where employees have been extremely rude. I used to love their ridiculously huge carne guisada tacos, stuffed to the brim with fillings. Wow. I remember going here with my dad for breakfast when I was really young. As I grew older, the family and I regularly had breakfast here on Saturday mornings. Honestly, this place is NOT pretty. The interior is rather outdated (it looks rather 60s-80s dark), and the wait staff primarily speaks Spanish (but don't worry - they understand English, too!). But the food is dirt CHEAP and DELICIOUS. For my mom, dad, brother, and me, we had enormous tacos that would take up the entire plate all for under $8 for all four of us. With coffee for my parents, and orange juice for me and my brother. What's great is the tortillas are made in the restaurant - not store bought. After growing up with homemade tortillas at home, I seriously don't like store-bought tortillas. Goodness. This place cannot be beat. Cannot stress that enough! Get over there already! read more

Since I am finding all my favorite places in Texas this one is a must!! It is a total dive but the best mexican food!! Breakfast tacos OMG are soo good and soo cheap!They make homemade huge tortillas right there and the breakfast tacos are the best I've ever had. Little old Mexican ladies hand make the huge flour tortillas in the kitchen. This is a sure sign of a great breakfast taco place in my opinion! I miss Breakfast Tacos!! Decided to visit an old favorite while in town visiting. The first impression was not too good; the interior and the exterior are tired and old and need a good renovation/update/cleaning. The chips were terrible...not homemade and very stale. I was disappointed, as that was the first thing to come to the table. The salsa was good. Went on a holiday and they were one of the few open a nice way for them to start. Server helped seat us and was very friendly and everyone was rather welcoming. If you have little ones though there is marginal seating options. Must've been one booster and high chair in total each. Maybe because it was a holiday but they didn't serve chips and salsa like seems to be customarily done at such restaurants. Still the waitress was very engaging asking about our day and such generally being peasant. Now we ordered and the food was brought in a decent amount of time. A generous helping of rice and beans are served with their Botana plates. Also the tortillas or the flour ones anyways are huge. Plus the two salsas they brought were delicious one is a deep red chile molido super spicy but super delicious. The other was a cooked tomato based chile mild but heated and extremely satisfying. We didn't get offered refills but then the meal was quick and it helped that the food tasted good and plentiful enough that we had to take to go boxes. Prices are very decent and they run specials. One interesting thing of note is that they have a chicken fried steak plate that is served with rice and beans. Now the place will not wow anyone with its interior. It actually looks like an abuelas house that was converted into a diner. However Abuelo has not been around for awhile to do much needed repairs mostly to the ceiling which has odd almost ominous looking stains. They have room aplenty to improve from there into the stellar category which for that and the outdated style is why I'll reserve a star. read more

This one has been here for 50 years or so!! I came here as a kid and grew up on their carne guisada tacos and rice! While the popularity has slightly waned over the years it's still a great place for cheap Mexican food. Can't go wrong with the tacos. Huge and delicious. The nachos are loaded with delicious cheese. The salsa with the chips is ehh but if you ask for the pico de gallo you will love it. read more

I was traveling and ate here based on yelp reviews but was unimpressed. It is a dive and outdated but clean. The tile in the bathroom looked updated and the bathroom was very clean. I had a taco that was fairly good but the chile rellano had seen better days. The chili seemed old and wilted. The salsa and beans were a bit rancid and the rice lifeless. Ok, I know this place by reputation, by the bad service I've gotten in the past, and the questionable quality of some of the orders, and have wisely avoided this crude place for a couple years now. The other day, the people I was working for decided they were going there for lunch, and I was stuck with them, so I went (they paid - I would never spend a cent in this place). We arrived, and there was almost noone there, despite it being like 4pm - there were people in only 2 or 3 other tables. We sat down, waitress came a couple minutes later, took our orders, and then we waited- boy did we! Our food didn't come until about 15 minutes later, despite there being almost no other customers. I had ordered coffee when the waitress asked us what we wanted for drinks. What she brought back was a disgrace: it was LUKEWARM, like it had been sitting since morning, and it smelled OLD. I took my cup to the front, and asked the owner if there was any way I could get fresh coffee. Long story short, I wated another 15 minute, convinced the watress had forgot about it, before she brought me some freshly made coffee. It was rather watery, to say the least! Our food: the plates the other people in my group had looked good enough. I ordered the milanesa special, and the meat wasn't all that bad. The tortillas, on the other hand, were pretty dry. The waitress there had this bad attitude, acting like she'd rather not even be there dealing with you. Next time I'm with a group of people who want to treat me to some El Taquito, I think I'll probably just stay in the car and wait for them to finish. read more

I used to Live in Harlingen and was very close to this place. When I was in High school I took Electronics and the Teacher loved the large carne quisada taco so much he would send one of us to go get them for the entire class if you wanted to buy one. Trust me everyone did. I would order two when I could afford it and when I could not I always had someones left overs. I swear its like I had tapeworms I could not stop eating, lol.
