Our friends recommended a different Mexican restaurant in Coquille. We have tried both and definitely prefer El Tapatío. The staff is friendly, prompt, and excited to please. Guys, this is Mexican food in Oregon, and Coos County no less, so let's be realistic. That being said, this is my favorite place to go. The amazingly kind and generous service is noteworthy. This is the place I call home. You can easily find some great Mexican and fusion favorites from their vast menu. I've posted the whole menu, showing approximately 168 menu options! Additionally, they will do special orders and tweak their menu items upon request, and they will always do it with a smile. If you are like me and you like your burritos dry (not smothered in sauce), they are happy to oblige. I love this place and the people who work here. Favorites are (see menu image notes as well): The pina colada, Mexican hot chocolate, the Tostada de Ceviche as an appetizer, quesadillas, anything with jumbo shrimp or skirt steak, anything with verde or tomatillo sauce, the burritos and enchiladas (esp the ones w/green verde/tomatillo sauces), flan, AND their fried ice cream. We stopped in for dessert. We ordered the fried ice cream based on the review. It was in a glass fish bowl it was a ball of ice cream low quality very lumpy and gritty.It was covered with corn flakes that have been deep-fried. In the glass bowl it had very little chocolate very little strawberry and in between the layers you could see the grease. It had whipped cream on the top and one cherry. I was very surprised. The other thing that was really hard , was we were set in a booth the booth the seats take you clear to the ground and your face is at the level of the table and it was really hard to eat out of this fish bowl in the middle of the table that was over your head. The restaurant was empty one other couple came in. It was around 4:00 p.m on a Friday.On the other hand I haven't tried the other food, but I wasn't impressed with the fried ice cream. read more

Although the sign outside said "Authentic Mexican Food", the beef taco was ground beef, with lots of lettuce, and a little cheese spilling out on the plate. Why do they fill the shell with lettuce, then throw some cheese on it. When it hits the plate sideways, the cheese leaves the taco, and resides on the plate! Kind of a typical "Gringo" taco. Upon biting into it, a fair amount of grease spilled out on the plate. This was not what I was hoping for. Chips were ok, but salsa was pretty watery, and bland. I think $7.50 was too much to pay for a weak margarita that was mostly bottled margarita mix. Especially since Mr. Zack's (about a block or two away) serves a way stronger, larger, better tasting margarita for $4.00. It was disappointing to spend about $12.00 (including tip) for one greasy taco, and a marginal margarita. read more

I've eaten here twice. The first time I had two chili rellenos. They were OK but nothing to write home about. The second time I had arroz con pollo. I've eaten arroz con pollo in many places, it's one of my favorite dishes, but never anything like this. The onions had been fried and the whole plate was greasy. I'll not order this again. Haven't been to this place in at least 14 years but always remembered the food as being good. Went to eat here after doing my DMV stuff this week. Food is still good although the salsa is too mild. Service was very slow and NOT attentive but that could have been because of all the cover stuff. I ate here with my son and mother the other day when the place we wanted to go to was closed. I had a steak burrito without any sauce, my son had fajitas, and my mother asked for tacos with no lettuce or tomato. My food and my son's food was good. His only complaint was not enough tortillas for the amount of filling. The reason for 3 stars instead of 4 is my mom's dish. The tacos looked like slimy, floppy fish on her plate. Totally unappealing! The "first bite is with the eye", and that first bite was awful. She said the ground beef tasted like it came from a can. The cilantro she asked for was entirely forgotten. The waitress was friendly, perhaps ever so slightly too pushy, insisting that I try the refried beans. Chips were ok, salsa ok, too runny for my liking. The food is good. No doubt about that. The service is mediocre. This was my 3rd time here. It is consistent: service is mediocre. On Sunday, Aug.8 my friend and I went there. We had the shrimp fajita for 2. When we first entered, the waitress greeted up in a friendly manner. I asked for a Michelin beer. And my friend asked for iced tea. Took 3-4 min to get that and we were only the second table with customers so she wasn't busy. She brought me a light beer which I didn't ask for. My friend asked for a mixed bar drink. Again, took a long time to get it and when we got the bill the drink cost $13. Turns out there is a small and large and the waitress assumed my friend wanted the large. Fajitas: normally when you order a fajita meal you get 3 tortillas but we got only 4 for the two of us. Had to ask for more. Guess what? Yup, took several minutes to get them. The bathroom is in the back and totally dark. Had to paw around to find the switch. I suggested to the waitress They put a night light in. She gave an excuse that they tried it once and one customer complained that it flickered. So? Get another. I've never seen a night light flicker. So, with this being my 3rd try here, won't go back. My friends and I stopped by on a Tuesday for the $1 tacos and $3 Mexican beers. They only advertise the $1 ground beef tacos so I was definitely set on just eating cheese tacos. The waitress was really nice and offered me beans as a substitute for beef. Our food was definitely filling, not the best quality (hence the three stars), but you get what you paid for. The guac was good all it needed was a little salt and the chili con queso complemented our food perfectly. The staff was sooo friendly it's ridic they periodically checked on us and made sure we were comfortable. The waitress was kind enough to split our shared dishes three ways on our checks with no fuss. She even complimented my hair! The decor is of a typical Mexican American restaurant adobo themed colors and artwork. Taco Thursday's are a thing of the past helllo Tuesdays! I will be coming back! read more

Very weird vibe in here. Nearly empty with an overly talkative waiter who is rather intrusive. The food was ok. Not stellar, but not awful either. I live in Coquille and prefer the food and the relaxed comfortable family like atmosphere of The Colonial, so we continue to go there for Mexican. Have this place two strikes and now I'm out. My wife and I are both Chefs as our careers. I just want to let you know we have had mexican food in alot of places. We never expected to find real authentic mexican food in a small town in Oregon. But we did in the small towne of Coquille Oregon. The service was just as phenomenal as the food. If you want something just to survive on go to McDonalds. But if you want something to let your palette then you need to stop in to El Tapatio is a definite must stop. I just want to express my many thanks to the guys in the kitchen for a real authentic mexican meal and express our many thanks to the exceptional waitress that greeted us with a warm smile even though we arrived 30 minutes before closing. Came here for lunch and was empty. Mind you, this is a small town but I thought there would be a lunch crowd in there. Ordered and the server was super nice. The decor was poorly done. Food was forgettable Mexican food. Food tasted like sauce on enchiladas was from a can. They piled taco and tostada on top of enchilada so within seconds I had a mushy combination on my plate with a lot of cheese and lettuce. I've spent a lot of time in Mexico and I currently live in San Diego which is a Mexican food Mecca. Tapitio isn't on par with any authentic Mexican place around. Give it a try. read more

We were surprised to see a negative review from July, 2012 as we have been stopping at this place for 25 years when we vacation in Oregon. The quality has never disappointed us. Today we shared the beef fajitas and had plenty to eat of a very tasty dish. The meat was plentiful and tender and the rice was much better than our usual rice at Mexican restaurants where we live. Also, the chips served when we arrived were very nice ones, not thick like some. The server was really friendly, the seating very comfortable and decor nice. I give it a big thumbs up. read more
