More like a 2.5-star really…read more.. Pros Great location right next to Toledo cathedral -- one of the most beautiful and amazing cathedrals I've ever seen. We arrived in the morning before check-in time, but friendly owner Manolo held our bags for us and delivered them to the room himself so they were waiting for us when we returned later in the afternoon. The room itself had some character. I liked the brick wall behind the bed. I'm sure it was a very historic building. There was a nice rooftop terrace. Price was reasonable. We had a partial view of the cathedral from our room. Cons My wife and I both thought breakfast was weak. It would have been nice to have some fresh fruit and higher-quality juices. The shower was broken. It was the kind of shower where you're supposed to be able to place the hand-held shower head into a holder so that it becomes a fixed overhead shower. But the overhead clip wouldn't hold the showerhead in an upright position. So we had to rest the showerhead on top of the faucets, where it was easy to accidentally switch the temperature between scalding hot and icy cold. Not a fun way to shower. And the shower cubicle itself felt very insubstantial, plastic and cheap. We had a modern LCD TV and a wall-mounted air-con unit, but no remote control for either one. Not a disaster, but pretty annoying on both counts, especially with the A/C since we could only turn it on or off manually and couldn't find a way to adjust the temperature. The old-fashioned door locks are a nice period touch, but they made it kind of hard to open and close doors, particularly the bathroom door, in our hotel room. As in many Spanish hotels, the room is small. There was actually some nice built-in storage for clothing, but the room itself had only two single beds pushed together - no chairs for sitting and relaxing, no desk for working. We were just there overnight, so it was workable, but it would have felt cramped for a longer stay... The view of the cathedral is nice during the day, but the cathedral is not lit at night (not the hotel's fault) so the view isn't nearly as nice at night. I know Spain has a budget crisis and is trying to save money, but I do think it would be nice if they lit the cathedral a little -- at least until 10 p.m. or so. They could even have floodlights switch on for a few minutes every 1/2 hour or something like that if they are trying to save money on electricity. FYI on Toledo -- Nice town for a day-trip or overnight stay from Madrid, but do be aware that it is as hilly as the guidebooks say and that the layout of the city is incredibly confusing. We had pretty good luck finding our way around most of Spain, but we got ridiculously turned around in Toledo, especially when trying to find the monastery where El Greco is buried. Still, if you are a fan of El Greco, Toledo is definitely worth the trip and the cathedral is a work of art in itself.

Most of the historic places are closed, but you get a better sense of the city at night. This Hostal has a great location, next to the Cathedral, but high enough in the city to have a great view of the area. Toledo is a very hilly city, with twisting and tight streets. Its an historical city, with a number of sites. The staff is friendly and helpful to Americans. It is recommended in the Rick Steve's guide book, and we ran into another couple that selected this hostal for the same reason. The hostal has a theme for each floor (Jewish, Christian, and Muslim - since Toledo at one point had all three of these religions in the city at one time), we ended up on the Jewish floor is a themed room - the money changers - not the most PC name. The room had a view of the Cathedral, with a large king size bed, not the best pillows, a small TV and private bathroom. The bathroom had a shower that was smaller than a cruise ship shower, even thought the bathroom was larger room. There is no elevator, but the stairs were manageable. The breakfast was a great value, on the 2nd floor, with a terrace that provided a wonderful view of the city. So for one night, it was a good value, in a historical city.
